Do you go out much in evenings these days (age 40/45+)

Just that really!

I’m mid 40’s now and hardly ever go out of an evening - in fact I mostly dread the idea of having to go out to anything ‘social’ after 8pm as staying up late will mean I won’t be able to wind down in time for bed around 10/10.30pm.

I tend to see friends for lunch / on day off or at weekends, during the day if possible. I will attend ‘big’ evening events if it’s important (big birthday, wedding etc) but I’d never sign up for an evening group activity or just a random dinner.

My parents (in their mid 70’s!) are always out in the evening for dinners, bingo, friends over etc. They’ve always done it and I remember friends parents being the same.

Is this a menopause thing, just me!?

I’d like to feel more able to, I just can’t hack it!

In this weather I'd much rather stay in!

Justwanttobebythesea · 20/11/2025 20:42

I say yes to nights out but when they come I wish I hadn’t. Much prefer a coffee/lunch or matinee theatre these days. I can do local dinner with my DH and DCs on a weekend night but that’s 6pm and home by 8pm!

Crunchymum · 20/11/2025 20:45

Rarely make evening plans these days (45, teetotal for 3 years).

In the summer holidays I may be out with the kids until 8pm / 9pm but not sure that counts.

I've been out past 11pm once this year and that was for dinner with friend and I was ready to leave by 10pm.

Most weekends for dinner or gigs, sometimes midweek. Also gym in the evenings after work. Last academic year I did a course every Thursday night but I’m taking a breather. Sometimes mid week football matches. I’m horrified to realise I’m 50 next year and intent on sucking every last inch out of life.

Beefjerky · 20/11/2025 20:48

By choice? Never. We love lunch/brunch/afternoons out but not nights. Even on holiday 🤣🤣 Boring, but we like it. The exception to that is if we are hosting. We often host evenings/over nights at our house and we like that too.

EmeraldDreams73 · 20/11/2025 20:50

I think a lot depends on what people are doing during the day, as well as personality. When you work FT and have kids and a home to run, most people I know are too busy/knackered/skint to go out much. I go out probably a handful of times a year in the evenings (I'm 52) but I'd love to be retired (zero chance btw) and can quite see myself doing more socialising when I'm not drained from the day/doing the evening shift of helping dds with work/whatever.

Titsywoo · 20/11/2025 20:50

Not really. I used to go out as much as I could through my 20's and 30s when my kids were younger. Typically now they are adults and I can go out as much as I want I don't fancy it! I go out for dinner with DH once a week and with friends once every couple of months probably. I do need to get out more. I run my own business which I started 7 years ago and for the last 3 to 4 years if has taken over a lot of my spare time.

Fuelledbylatte · 20/11/2025 20:50

45 and zero energy after 7/8 in the evening

A special occasion I can find the energy but I’d really rather be home and winding down

life is so busy with teens & tweens plus work and wider family obligations. I’m just knackered!

tobee · 20/11/2025 21:13

I love to go out in the evenings. It's one of my favourite things to do. Although it's annoying how expensive it is so go less often. Always have done. I like to go out to the centre of London if possible. Live on outskirts.

I'm 57. Can't see myself ever changing. The idea of not going out makes me feel claustrophobic.

I’m 49 and go out in the evenings regularly. Often theatre/sports event/cinema/dinner with partner but often out with friends. I don’t consider getting back any time before midnight a particularly late night. I may be rebelling from feeling stifled in my marriage of 20 years though!!

Just realised I’ve added almost a decade to my life 🤣🤣 hoping to still be out as much when I actually am 49!

RowOfRunners · 20/11/2025 21:16

I hate going out in the evening. I’d much rather see friends for lunch rather than dinner.

APatternGrammar · 20/11/2025 21:17

I’m your age, out tonight and was out yesterday. My children are 8.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/11/2025 21:25

I’m 47 (tomorrow!) I go out for dinner with friends at least once or twice a month. This week I’ve been to a concert and out for dinner twice.

PollyIndia · 20/11/2025 21:33

I’m 50 and do love staying in, but I make an effort to go out and do stuff because I know i‘ll enjoy it once I’ve got myself off the sofa. This week I went to the theatre Tuesday, and I’m off to Radiohead Saturday then a 50th in east London. Last week I went to a party locally that hot chip dj’d at on Thursday went to see all my sons with Bryan Cranston at the theatre on Friday. So a mix of stuff. But there’s a lot going on in London and i don’t want to live here and not make the most of it.

JoanOgden · 20/11/2025 21:34

Yes several evenings a week (choir practice, theatre, meeting friends for dinner), but I don't have kids and I don't really drink in the week. I like to be back home and in bed by 11 - it's very rare these days that I stay out until last orders.

EmeraldRoulette · 20/11/2025 21:36

In theory, I'm happy to do it (49)

In practice, I'm no longer able to drive. This means relying on taxis to get home.

I have a trusted local taxi firm, but unfortunately a lot of drivers won't work evenings now. The evening taxi drivers they have are really not great. It sounds trivial, but that does really put me off.

Winter puts me off as well, but that's obviously season specific!

i'm a late person, so I don't have any issues going to bed late.

I lost most of my social circle during lockdown and it's been awhile to build up a new one. So I feel really bad if I get invited to something and don't want to go, but occasionally the taxi thing just really makes me groan. Good example is Christmas Eve, there is something I'd really like to go to but the type of drivers we're gonna get on Christmas Eve -hmmm. I'll probably go but it's really off putting.

I've spoken to a few younger women who are having the same issue, if you're a woman going home alone it's really not nice.

To be honest, I find it's the kind of thing that people don't understand and think I'm being neurotic about it. some people just don't worry about this stuff, I guess.

But also, I think people who are used to always going home in a car, or always have somebody with them, don't realise how intimidating it can be to be in a cab on your own at 1 am or whatever with a bloke who makes you feel uneasy.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 20/11/2025 21:39

Im 46. I used to love a night out but i need my sleep so much more, i cant handle alcohol it makes me ill and sick the next day very easily so i then worry about how much im drinking ( very little!!). No kids so can’t blame them.
I much prefer early evening/late afternoon for a couple of drinks/food.

My partner still goes out with his mates maybe once a month. Together we tend to do brekkie or the afternoon/evening trip out amongst other things.

Should add i do like going to gigs so u have to suck up the night time thing then but i don’t go to as many as they are often spendy.

ai like being at home winding down for sleep. As insomnia is still biting.

mamaduckbone · 20/11/2025 21:40

Not often - if I meet a friend for dinner we often meet at 6 so we can be home at 9ish, and Dh and I try to go to earlier cinema showings and would rather do early doors drinks then come home for dinner. I get up at 6.15am 5 days a week and it already kills me without adding late nights into the mix.
Now and then though I think to hell with it and suffer the consequences (although tbh my late nights are more often waiting for ds16 to get home from a party, or picking him up)

NormasArse · 20/11/2025 21:43

I go to the cinema every month.

On walking weekends about 5 times a year, with socialising in the evenings.

Pub quiz every so often.

Most nights I want to sit with the dogs…

Xmasbaby11 · 20/11/2025 21:44

I'm 49 and go out once or twice a month, not much. I would go out more but I don't have much spare cash and also need to study in the evenings, so life is quite busy. I'm looking forward to going out more when I finish my MA!

Most of my socialising is in the daytime - I meet friends for coffee weekly.

NovemberRedHolly · 20/11/2025 21:49

Hardly ever since lockdown really. It massively changed the way my circle socialises, now we all can’t be arsed and go to bed early.
We’re only in our 30s too.

TubeScreamer · 20/11/2025 21:49

I’m out most weekdays evenings.

Monday is inevitably a meeting of some sort - parish council, PCC, other vlllage committee
Tuesday. - bellringing and pub
Wednesday - parish council or book group
Thursday - bell ringing
Friday - concert or meal out or meet up with friends

usually stay home Saturday and Sunday

Holluschickie · 20/11/2025 21:51

I am 53 and go out at least thrice a week to the theatre, cinema, talks, hobby clubs or comedy nights.

tourdefrance · 20/11/2025 21:51

Ideally I like to go out in the evening about once a week. Just to break up the week really. Its only a proper meal out about once every couple of months, otherwise theatre, cinema or a volunteer event. Still generally home by 10 / 10.30.
I also meet friends to catch up at lunchtime but that's limited by our lunchbreaks.

(late 40s, two teens still at home, but one is pretty independent and the other only has a couple of activities a week).

I work FT, have a child and a house to run, plus I’m in the middle of a major house renovation. I still think life’s too short to stay in at night now that DS doesn’t need a babysitter for a couple of hours. The thing that may make it easier for me is that we live close to a city centre.
