Are we still hanging washing out ?

I’ve always hung out washing I don’t have a dryer but whilst hanging out today in the FROST I thought is this pointless?! Do people still hang out in this kind of weather - it briefly snowed here yesterday and is very frozen ground today but it is sunny now …?

I have done today, as it is dry and bright here. Yes, it is bitterly cold but I think that a few hours in the light breeze, dry air and sunshine will lift some moisture out of the clothes and I'd rather it lifted outside that inside my house! Won't get them fully dry, but is definitely better than not doing it at all.

Yes! Mine is out now. Check out something called sublimination

It worked on our swimming towels this morning, washed them last night, hung them out at first light, they went as stiff as a board then as the morning went by they unfroze, blew about in the wind and are now cold but dry ready for later.

Fifty50Fifty · 20/11/2025 12:00

Mine is out now, and a second load in the machine to go out later. It will feel cold when I bring it in so it will go on the airer overnight to make sure it is completely dry and I will put it away tomorrow morning.

I hang out my laundry all year round. Sometimes the items might need putting on the heated airer to completely dry, but most of the time, on a sunny, dry day, even if it's freezing, it all dries beautifully.

Somersetbaker · 20/11/2025 12:01

If it's needs to be windy and not raining, then out it goes.

RaraRachael · 20/11/2025 12:02

I've stopped for the winter unless we get a very mild spell. There's nothing worse than taking washing in and finding it's not much drier than when you put it out.

Sprig1 · 20/11/2025 12:05

I always hang mine out unless it's raining (and often even then if it's forecast to dry up). Sometimes it's not completely dry when I bring it in but then I just hang it on an airer overnight to finish off. I want to reduce the moisture in my house as much as possible.

UrbanFan · 20/11/2025 12:06

Today is a lovely sunny and breezy day and perfect to get the washing out. So long as there is a breeze, so that it doesn't just hang and no rain why not put it out?

MimiSunshine · 20/11/2025 12:08

Yes, dry ground so out it goes.

atthis time of year, I usually put it on the airer outside so it’s easy to bring in. May not be fully dry, but better than the moisture in the house

SingingSands · 20/11/2025 12:20

There's no sun now in my little north face garden until spring. So it's a no from me and I miss it!

Instead, I put it on the airer in my front bedroom to catch the sun, open the window if it's during the day and run a dehumidifier if it's in the evening.

Blackcountryexile · 20/11/2025 12:20

I'm sure I read somewhere that laundry dries outside if the humidity level is less than 70%. It was below that yesterday for a few hours and the sun was out. It was very cold. I finished it off in the dryer. There was much less water in container than there would have been if I'd put it straight in.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/11/2025 12:43

No. I cannot standing hanging out to bring in wet and having to rehang. It really pisses me off!

ETA - my husband would hang it out and then put it in the the basket to put away wet / damp. He is not allowed to touch mine or the kids washing, or towels / sheets etc. I take them to the launderette and bung in the drier.

8TinyToeBeans · 20/11/2025 12:49

Ours is out today in the sun. We have a south facing garden and as long as it’s dry it goes outside. It’ll come in freezing cold but drier than it went out. I then put it on the airer overnight and it’s fully dry by morning.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 20/11/2025 12:50

I put it out in hangers and hang them all on rotary dryer frame. I have a Sheila’s maid in kitchen so transfer hangers to there then into wardrobes when fully dry.

Christmascarrotjumper · 20/11/2025 12:51

No. Never fully dries and it's too much faff moving it around.

Stillpoor · 20/11/2025 12:56

I have a tumble dryer.

InLoveWithAI · 20/11/2025 12:59

I never have outside.

But I have a heat pump dryer, so little to no condensation, and doesn't harm the clothes.

Also have a disability, but then have always used a dryer since I can remember.

Pepperedpickles · 20/11/2025 13:11

Nope. Can’t stand the faff of hanging stuff outside, ever. Just move from washing machine to dryer (putting stuff directly onto hangers that can’t be tumbled and hang over the stairs) and then fold up and put away.

Utini · 20/11/2025 13:16

Yes, all winter if it's dry outside. Even if it only partially dries I find it smells so much nicer after it's been hung outside for a while!

Lauralou19 · 20/11/2025 13:39

If the path is dry, the washing will be dry.

Two loads out today in the sun, wind and chilly weather. It dries brilliantly! Anything slightly wet when I bring it in (get it in by 4pm) will either go in the tumble dryer for 5 mins to finish it off or on the airer by the fire.

aWeeCornishPastie · 20/11/2025 13:40

absolutely not

Its been sunny where we live from March until the start of October. Why would you use a tumble dryer when it dries in literally a couple of hours in the Summer? It just seems like throwing money down the drain. Two loads on the line now and will need 2 minutes in the dryer. I just couldn’t justify using a tumble dryer when you dont need to.

CherryBlossom321 · 20/11/2025 13:43

I’ve just about given up after persevering so far. It was out there for ten hours yesterday, the same the day before, and came in still pretty damp. It’s now drying in half the time hung indoors.
