Are we still hanging washing out ?

I’ve always hung out washing I don’t have a dryer but whilst hanging out today in the FROST I thought is this pointless?! Do people still hang out in this kind of weather - it briefly snowed here yesterday and is very frozen ground today but it is sunny now …?

Of course not. If I had hung it out today it would have been sodden by now. We've had sleet and snow for much of the day.

I find if I leave it until dusk it gets wetter. How was it in the end and what was your high today? Maybe I have given in too soon?

I was invested in this question! I think it starts feeling damp around 3-4pm on even a sunny winters day and make sure i get washing in by then. Was surprised to hear 5pm was fine- good to know!

It’s a no from me. I couldn’t even face going out into the garden never mind hanging the washing to bring in frozen/cold later on.

Curlygirl06 · 20/11/2025 22:10

Mine goes on the airer then it's put outside. We've got a wind- out awning and it goes under there, whatever the weather. I've been known to brush the snow off the patio and bung it out, even if it freezes to the airer. I got all the towels dry today, cold but sunny today. I do have a tumble dryer but use it rarely.

SusiQ18472638 · 21/11/2025 09:48

I don’t, it would never fully dry in this weather and I can’t be bothered to hang it all up twice! Hang everything out in the summer though

elliejjtiny · 21/11/2025 09:55

Towels, bedding and maxi dresses go out on the line and then get finished off on the heated airer.

I still have odd bits left out to dry in the greenhouse... mainly because I ran out of space indoors, and we have had snow and heavy frost for the past couple of days.

The greenhouse is excellent for drying anything in about half of a day in the summer, providing that you don't mind smelling of tomatoes...

Sartre · 21/11/2025 10:11

No because I just don’t see the point personally. I’ve tried it before and it doesn’t dry at all, even if the sun is out like today. It comes in freezing cold and still damp. The tumble dryer is on constantly in our house over winter, I have 5 DC so wouldn’t survive without.

MargoLivebetter · 21/11/2025 11:04

Another load out today in the sparkling sunshine. Will be at least 80% dry by the time I bring it all in at 3pm and entirely for free. I always bring in earlier than later because as soon as the temperature drops again the dampness stops lifting. I wouldn't wait until dusk myself at this time of year.

OneBlueFinch · 21/11/2025 18:30

In the winter I use a heated dryer from Lakeland. But in the spring summer autumn when it’s dry outside yes

clary · 21/11/2025 18:32

I hung my sheets out yesterday and they got dry enough to press and put away.

Best is a dry windy day then the temp doesn't matter

ReignOfError · 21/11/2025 18:38

If it’s not raining, out it goes. Admittedly, I’m retired so usually able to bring it in before it turns damp in the late afternoon, but I’ve always hung washing out whenever possible.

Meadowfinch · 21/11/2025 18:40

Yes, as long as it isn't raining or foggy.

Those who hang towels out... Aren't they scratchy AF?

lolly427 · 21/11/2025 19:06

I've been hanging it out up until now but unless it's double figures and dry I won't bother. I have a tumble drier so don't have to hang it inside.

celticprincess · 21/11/2025 19:20

You see if o leave it out on a summers day and the sun starts to down I find it’s damp. I need to bring it in when it’s still sunny and warm. We haven’t had much sun and warmth for weeks now here up north. Living in a terrace you only get minimum sun in the summer and even when the sun is out in the winter my yard isn’t often in the sun. I gave up and wound my washing line in a few weeks ago now. I use the radiators. Frowned upon I know but I also run a dehumidifier when the washing is drying. I don’t have a dryer. 8 have a combine washer/dryer so don’t have time to wait for things to dry to get the next load done - I do all washing on a weekend. I basically pop the underwear in the dryer in one go at the end of the washing. I then do towels on a work from home day if and when I have one and stick them in the dryer as I don’t like them crispy when hung. The last month up until this week has been the tricky in between period as the house has been too warm to put the radiators on so I have to open windows to get the temp down inside. But this week has been freezing, snow, ice and below zero temps.

I hang out my laundry all year round. Sometimes the items might need putting on the heated airer to completely dry, but most of the time, on a sunny, dry day, even if it's freezing, it all dries beautifully.

Same here. We got two loads dry yesterday as it was dry and rather breezy.

We've a load out now, but the breeze has dropped, so it'll need to hang up when it comes in.

Lovetosurf · 21/11/2025 19:27

If it's breezy/windy dry day, yes! Then finish off in the airing cupboard.
Only on weekend or WFH days for me though, as you need to bring it in by 3'ish really.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/11/2025 19:38

I have to be honest that I just cannot be bothered pegging it out when it’s this cold. We don’t get any sun in our north facing garden at this time of year. I don’t think it was windy today but that wouldn’t have changed my mind.

I do resort to using our tumble drier much more at this time of year, but through the warmer months I love pegging things out to dry on the line.

So does mustiness.

I always dry mine outside and they're still soft, not scratchy at all. I live in a hard water area though, so always use (eco) fabric conditioner.

IsntItDarkOut · 21/11/2025 20:26

If I had been more organised today I would have gotten some sheets outside- the sun was warm here early afternoon and would have semi dried them.
