Are we still hanging washing out ?

I’ve always hung out washing I don’t have a dryer but whilst hanging out today in the FROST I thought is this pointless?! Do people still hang out in this kind of weather - it briefly snowed here yesterday and is very frozen ground today but it is sunny now …?

I don’t hang mine out at the time of the year..I do when weather warms out in the spring and all through summer but I find it pointless at this time of the year. They’re never fully dry and I’ll just have to hang them up indoors again so can’t be bothered to do it twice! We have a dryer but rarely use it. We do have an Aga though so that’s brilliant over the winter for drying and warming the kitchen!

SparkyBlue · 20/11/2025 13:51

No this is the first week I haven’t as it’s damp here the ground is still wet in the afternoon so clothes wouldn’t dry

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 20/11/2025 14:05

I will hang things out when I can. It doesn’t dry completely but it doesn’t have to hang inside for so long that way

nowaynohowz · 20/11/2025 14:06

Yes but mine froze yesterday 😅

mummydoris2006 · 20/11/2025 14:24

I love line drying my washing but find at this time of year that when I get back from work it's damp again unfortunately. Therefore I use the dryer other than weekends when I'm about more to grab it in earlier.

mcmuffin22 · 20/11/2025 14:27

I do all year round. Even kn dull days it comes in a lot drier than when it went out.

WhosThePratInThePartyHat · 20/11/2025 14:30

I love getting washing out, but I stop around October and start again when we get nice days in late February. I find it to be too faffy putting it out, to then have to meddle with it again in the evening.

It is bitterly cold here, even the Ddog is not fussed about going out!

I got a cut nose years ago, as a frozen towel hit me in the face… that did it for me… waiting for longer days now.

Im the happiest person when my lines are full, the sun and wind are drying it all -it’s like someone does the job for you!

Octavia64 · 20/11/2025 14:31

Mine used to freeze outside. I don’t do it in these temps any more.

Deliberations · 20/11/2025 14:35

Unless its actually snowing or raining I try and put mine out all year round. It might not get completely dry but I stick it on an airer (a heated one if necessary) to finish off. I do have a tumble dryer but can't remember the last time I used it...

However I live alone so don't have a huge amount of laundry to do. I probably would use the tumble dryer more if the kids were still here.

This post has blown my mind! I hang washing out for about 6 weeks of the year. Literally the sunniest of days in mid summer when the sky is blue. Lived overseas for the majority of my adult life and when I returned to the UK I bought a dryer. I had no idea you could hang washing all year round.

Canopop · 20/11/2025 14:57

See in my life I don’t know anyone family or friends who have a tumble dryer so I’ve never really considered that! My other winter option is always just radiators or airers but I hate how damp the house gets .

Er not in the snow, no! Who would?

RafaFan · 20/11/2025 15:01

I hang mine out on sunny days all year round in Canada, even when it's -15C. The job itself is kind of unpleasant in those temps, but in general, if the clothes are hanging in sunlight they will go stiff as a board but eventually get at least 90% dry. Sometimes need hanging on the clothes horse to finish off. If it's overcast hanging clothes out is a waste of time in the winter. I just try to avoid using the tumble dryer if I can, and I think they smell much nicer if dried outside.

Invest in a dehumidifier, so much cheaper than a dryer. Apparently if you put your clothes on airers in a small room, close doors and windows and put dehumidifier on, it’ll dry clothes overnight. No damp and mould issues. I have friends who swear by it.

I normally put washing out all year. But it 3 degrees here. It's n̈ot worth the extra effort at this temp for me. It's got to be over 5 degrees or it doesn't come in much drier than it goes out.

I got a heat pump tumble dryer - 26p a load, saves all the house feeling cold because of clothes on the rads!

I find if I leave it until dusk it gets wetter. How was it in the end and what was your high today? Maybe I have given in too soon?

Today’s high was 3deg it was bright and sunny most of the day but still frost on my shed roof all day!
Got it in at 4:30pm and it’s all dry just leaving it on airer overnight as it’s cold feeling so will check its dry dry in morning before putting away but I think I’ll continue for a bit hanging it out! Just felt pointless this morning but maybe it’s not

Oh gosh your update makes me feel lazy now 😅 I hope getting it out, folding it all back up then tumble drying it anyway

Hatty65 · 20/11/2025 20:50

I've had hail and sleet today, so not put the washing out, but I will do all winter through dry days.

OneLoyalGreyFish · 20/11/2025 21:11

Not for me, once the clocks go back at the end of October my outside washing lines get put away. I only do a maximum of 3 loads a week and as I get half price electricity on Sundays between 9am and 5pm I wash and tumble dry then. There’s nothing more disheartening than taking the time to hang wet washing out only to find it’s hardly dried hours later.
Anyway I woke up to a good covering of snow this morning and it’s been snowing/sleeting all day - I’m not going outside in that!

Middlemarch123 · 20/11/2025 21:22

My dear departed dad always said if the patio is dry then hang the washing out. So I do, I like it to get the fresh air, even for a couple of hours. Then it goes on my heated airer in the conservatory overnight, then in the airing cupboard for a few hours. I don’t have a tumble dryer, too expensive and air lined washing smells lovely.

mum2jakie · 20/11/2025 21:26

Love drying washing outdoors all year round. WFH day tomorrow so looking forward to getting the bedding out on the line and smelling lovely!
