Are we still hanging washing out ?

I’ve always hung out washing I don’t have a dryer but whilst hanging out today in the FROST I thought is this pointless?! Do people still hang out in this kind of weather - it briefly snowed here yesterday and is very frozen ground today but it is sunny now …?

I hang my washing out in all weathers. I remember my mum was delighted if shirts and sheets were stiff with frost. She said if you ironed them like that you got perfect results with no creases!

Canopop · 22/11/2025 18:37

Ok so now I’m thinking next question is are we still ironing? Becasue I iron nothing these days 😅

I was just thinking the same thing. I haven’t ironed anything since I used to work in an office and wear shirts about 20 years ago. Surely no one irons stuff anymore?! If you tumble stuff and shake and fold it when it’s still warm it comes out very flat anyway.

celticprincess · 22/11/2025 20:05

I iron every Sunday evening. Kids uniforms are
a definite but all our T-shirts need ironing too and some of my dresses depending on material. I don’t tumble dry so don’t have that option to take them out warm and hang because they’re nearly done. My washer is a dryer also and on the rare occasion I forget to switch the dry mode off the come out very creased. But generally don’t have time to dry as need to get through the washes. I hang on radiators but they still need an iron.

There’s an old saying, something like “if the flags are dry the rags will dry”
So I check the pavement, if it’s dry the washing goes out.

Not like there's no lack of flags to check, these days😂

Tryingatleast · 22/11/2025 23:23

Yes but it’s only fine in anyway dryer one day out of a few and the days I’ve been at work they’re wetter when I get back sk unless it’s a nice blowy day I’m out from here on in- it’s like a form of torture at this stage- will stick on a clothes horse instead!

clary · 23/11/2025 13:18

Pegged out today – a sheet, DD's weighted blanket cover (a real pain to dry inside) and some other bedlinen – really blowy day and bright too so I have high hopes

ETA: PS I iron btw and so do lots of ppl I know. Some don’t tho.

I wish. All my bastard neighbours have wood burners, or are lighting bonfires. Completely impossible.

Oh I totally get this, not on my street luckily but there is a row of bungalows down the road and they all have log burners it sticks in the air and so bad for the planet 🫠

Absolutely not. That’s what tumble driers are for. Non underwear goes on the line if it’s nice from about May - August. After that , never

Oh I scandalise the neighbours by hanging out our underwear as well as everything else. I imagine they are shocked to see that we wear underpants :)

SliceofTosst · 23/11/2025 17:37

Yes. Did it today at 11.00am. Gets the sun for 2 hours at this time of year. Was windy and just now bought the drying rack in and it's totally dry and fresh smelling.

Don't have a tumble dryer and don't like the humidity drying indoors.

It was sunny and windy and 8°.

pilates · 23/11/2025 17:41

Yes as much as I can. Like a pp said got to be better than having damp clothes drying inside.

Those who hang towels out... Aren't they scratchy AF?

Yes, thankfully, I hate soft towels.

muddyford · 23/11/2025 17:50

Yes. I handwashed a waterproof jacket before lunch. With this perishing northwesterly wind it was dry by 4.30. If the paving slabs are drying the washing will.

ClemFandangosHair · 23/11/2025 17:59

I hang washing out all year around. You just can’t beat that freshly aired smell and it smells even fresher when frozen. I imagine that must kill any bugs too?
Beautiful line drying weather today in the midlands, a good breeze and some sunshine. Just brought my clothes in and they will air now until tomorrow but are quite dry already.

Same. Horrible soft and feel waterproof.

Boscoforever · 23/11/2025 18:56

The flags being referred to in the old saying are flag stones, not flying flags. My elderly Irish mother says to check outside, if the ground is dry its drying weather. She dries outside all year round. I remember taking her mothers clothes in and they were frozen solid.

I find by actually putting clothes on the washing line it actually ‘shakes’ out the wrinkles as well! Line dried clothes ARE way less creased than indoor dried clothes.
my husband does sometimes give me the rage when he willy nilly hangs clothes on the washing line and does not shake them out properly.

Couldn’t care less about underwear other than life being too short to hang out sock and underwear on a line

Ah ok my apologies. I thought it was bc the neighbours would see your scanties (have heard that here before :D)

What you need is IKEA's Peggy Octopus – then if it rains you can whisk it all in at once.

Ooh I love a nice scratchy towel! Grin

Can't hang anything out here, all it does is chuck it down lately.

Abra1t · 23/11/2025 19:50

Clothes out today on the line! (South central England.)

WonderingWanda · 23/11/2025 19:53

I judge it by whether the patio is drying off or not.
