Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Years ago an optician told me just to use Mr Sheen or any polish that you can use on glass to clean glasses with, so I do that & use a soft cloth to wipe it off with.

Cold water gets any fresh blood stains out of a fabric, & also if you get a tomato based stain on any clothing dab it with a wet cloth/flannel but make sure it's cold water you are using.

Wear sunglasses on a windy day if you're a contact lens wearer as stops getting dust, particles, whatever in your eyes (as it hurts like bloody hell if you get something under your contact lens) plus you look a la Anna Wintour 😂

A tiny bit of Zoflora or equivalent in the washing machine drawer or a spray of vinegar/vodka gets rid of any residual sweaty underarm smell in polyester tops or sports gear.

Already do the duvet cover/pillowcases, sunlight on stains thing, do an empty wash on 90C to clean the washing machine etc

Which body mist and what do you do, use a wipe, or a tissue as well?

Honestly I'd say stick with actual not-that-expensive glasses cleaner at this point rather than "white musk" or "dewbury"?

I've still got little bottles of hand sanitizer hanging around left over from Covid. I found out it's brilliant for cleaning my glasses and phone screen.

Hand sanitizer also works great for removing any hair dye off your skin.

When changing the bed, kittens can be 'trapped' under the fitted sheet and left to be more mole leaving you to get on with putting the duvet cover back on.

🤣

Get that plush new carpet feeling without the expense.
Get two carpet samples and tie them to your feet.👍

Am I the only one who hates the smell of zoflora?

No you most certainly are not,the smell gives me a thumper of a headache.

OvenChick · 16/11/2025 00:36

@BastardtheCat not for a while as have had traditionally prepared swede two days running now. Someone else can try this hack and report back though maybe?

It’s nauseating.

@breezyyy windows, shower doors, washing line:)

I wipe with kitchen roll the inside of the rubber seal on the washing machine to help dry it and check for mould. Seems to keep it at bay better than just leaving the washing machine door open.

To get the seeds out of a pomegranate, cut in half, place face down in a sandwich bag, then hit with a mallet.

All the seeds pop out. Job done.

Amazing, I have a mallet and a pomegranate, going to try this in the morning.

Any more mallet tips? i see from your other post that this is a favourite method!

I’m ordering a mallet. I never realised I needed one,

Folding your duvet, sheets and pillow cases into one pillowcase so sets are easy to find in the linen cupboard.

Freezing the rinds of parmesan cheeses. I add the into pasta sauces or tomato soups and the add depth of flavour

Freeze ginger then grate it into receipes

LetMeGoogleThat · 16/11/2025 00:50

Use a teaspoon like bar or soap to wash your hands after chopping garlic or onions.

Store mushrooms with a piece of kitchen paper on top, after you take the plastic off.

Wipe radiators with some fabric conditioner on, cleans them and they smell nice.

Beesandhoney123 · 16/11/2025 00:51

I want a mallet now!

If you have an item of clothing that is perfect but too baggy- usually something being borrowed by a teen, a tiny safety pin on the inside seam at the waist and a piece of ribbon or elastic threaded and tied just at the back will do the trick. No sewing involved.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/11/2025 00:54

Put water in candleholders that are clogged with old wax. No need to chip it out.

mathanxiety · 16/11/2025 00:55

Today on Instagram I saw a bearded guy in glasses sit a colander into a pot of cooked pasta and pour the boiling water into the sink through the bottom of the colander (he held both pot and colander with two hands). All the pasta stayed in the pot. All the water went down the drain.

A strange phenomenon of mallet buying happened in November…..

When you want to change the wax in burners, light the candle for a min and the old one slides out.

My favourite Take a Break "top tip" was that putting your washing in the freezer for half an hour before ironing means that it irons quicker.

Fine, no problem with the concept.

But...HOW the fuck did that person find that out?! I am post menopause so am a good friend with memory issues but at no point did I ever put a pile of ironing in the freezer and a bag of oven chips on the ironing board!

NET145 · 16/11/2025 01:00

Bars of soap can get water logged and scummy around the sink/ soap dish. To avoid this, simply press a bottle cap (discarded from a beer for example) hard into the bottom side of the soap and always place it down on that side, so it will dry properly and avoid wasting the soap on the surface 👍

😁 and there’s only so much ironing you can actually fit in a freezer!

Whats the problem with sittting the colander in the sink and pouring the pasta and water into it? Silly man.

I feel like I've learnt everything there is to know about microwaving swede. Never bought a swede before but that may change soon.

Over the years I have spent WAY too much time thinking about this (it was early 90's I saw it) and I have come the conclusion that it must have been a chest freezer because otherwise.....!
