Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

My aunt used to put hers through with the washing up every morning.
Has anyone tried cooking a salmon in a dishwasher, or is it an urban myth?

My mum used to cook salmon in the dishwasher. Wrap a whole salmon in foil. Put on top shelf of dishwasher and switch on! Cooks perfectly

A Dairylea triangle painted with Tipex makes an ideal mini brie

??? 😂

What power is the swede being cooked at! Love this tip.

@BoudiccaRuled I don’t know, I just squirt a bit in a line at the top while the glass is still wet, then use the glass squeegee to get it off.

Lilyhatesjaz · 15/11/2025 23:57

I clean my glasses with washing up liquid and water and dry them with a tissue. It doesn't smear like glasses cleaner.

🤣

Reminds me of the (probably apocryphal) story of the ornithologist who surprised when his book became a best seller.

The title: "Great Tits of the Norfolk Broads"

Sorry to lower the tone.

I put essential oil in my steam mop. Using mint at the moment because on some mouse infestation thread it said mice hate mint. No idea if it works but it smells great. I used all my left over COVID hand gel to clean the wire racks in my oven. Worked really well. Pop a dryer sheet in the bottom of all my bins. Cold setting on hairdryer to blast dust out from my radiators and the skirting boards. Oh and if you keep up the Christmas fairy lights you have put up on your windows all year it's very, very cheery.

CherryColaNiceToKnowYa · 16/11/2025 00:05

Before putting a duvet cover on, turn inside out, put your hands all the way up to the cover’s corners, grab the top corners of duvet, then shake. Goes on super easy!

If toilet is blocked, I stick an old plastic/wire hanger down to the bottom, waggle gently then flush and it’s all good!

Lots of lid ones but will add my own which works for corked bottles too. If you can’t get lid/cork off, run warm water over neck of jar/bottle and lid/cork will come off with ease.

There is stuff you can buy to spray car windows and the rain just rolls off and they always look like new.

This stuff also works on glass shower doors. It's very cheap. Spray the glass door. Wipe with microfiber cloth. Do both sides. Don't worry about cleaning the glass first, just crack on.

Never stand there spraying and polishing the door again, inside and out, getting off limescale etc.

To get the seeds out of a pomegranate, cut in half, place face down in a sandwich bag, then hit with a mallet.

All the seeds pop out. Job done.

Shazzy28 · 16/11/2025 00:09

To get fresh garlic out of its skin, place the whole bulb in a sandwich bag, hit with a mallet, all the skin will fall off. Fresh garlic ready to use.

Nearly all food stains and blood can be removed by rubbing with hand washing soap.

Don’t understand the baby one.

Me neither

sweatervest · 16/11/2025 00:12

squirt wd40 around your outside bit of the gaff and it will repel spiders and flies for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages

there's a man on tiktok who has a million uses for wd40. also spray it on suede shoes and it makes them waterproof.

also i slow cook cheap meat and freeze it in silicone muffin trays and then just whop out 2 muffins worth at a time etc etc

use a rubber broom to sweep the carpet before you hoover it. it gets rid of a load more stuff than just the hoover

When living in a foreign country and attempting to host a lovely dinner party for your new foreign friends but you can't get the right ingredients, or proper equipment to make your native cuisine quite right, a useful phrase is:

"Well, it varies from region to region."

If they are still suspicious:

"This is how we really cook at home."

They don't care and they will be off to the all night pizza and burger van anyway as soon as the torture is over. They love you for your little heart that shines.

The peel from half an orange makes a great crash helmet for your cat. Smaller oranges like tangerines are fine for smaller critters like hamsters.

@breezyyy I used Rain-x 2 in 1 glass cleaner and rain repellant. On Amazon.

I'm afraid it was only when I admired the amazing way the holiday cottage sparkling spotless massive shower doors were as new despite us using the shower.

My dh said casually ' I expect they use the stuff for car windows'

Me - WHAT STUFF - IS THIS A NEW INVENTION ?

Dh- no dear ( realises is in mortal danger, orders some instantly as penny drops)

This is not a "hack" as such and is probably common knowledge but I only learnt it a year or so ago - to get blood out of clothing, soak it in cold salt water, wring out, soak again in a fresh batch, wring out, then put in washing machine. It has worked for me on everything - whites, delicates, anything.

Are you a vampire? That's a lot of laundry to get blood stains out of!

🤣 Thank you Beesandhoney! Now I know there’s a good reason why I haven’t cleaned my windows for months! Just waiting for this thread.

OSTMusTisNT · 16/11/2025 00:28

When changing the bed, kittens can be 'trapped' under the fitted sheet and left to be more mole leaving you to get on with putting the duvet cover back on.

Crispynoodle · 16/11/2025 00:28

I’m a teacher and once ‘caught’ the school cleaner cleaning the windows with furniture polish. They were gleaming no streaks! She made me promise not to tell! Bizarrely it works
