A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes, I miss Twisty's posts; she made good points very well.

Too much hounding and piling on by some. What a shame.

I don’t understand why Starmer doesn’t do an FDR and look to the best brains in the country for advice. His crew are hardly what I would regard as intellectual giants - despite Lammy’s protests about where he went to uni - and so I would look at economists, who know what they’re talking about, to seek advice and a route through this mess.

When Roosevelt took over during the Great Depression he employed the best brains he could find in America and got them working for the government to help solve the problems.

I know you can say WW2 got America out of the depression, and not the government - but this out of the box thinking really did help to start to turn things around.

We have this government for almost 4 years to come and there really isn't anyone of any calibre sat on the front benches.

If something isn’t done very soon I can see a type of anarchy happening - led by ordinary working people.

AN should retain his sympathy for all the poor buggers who are going to hit by Reeves.

The damage will extend to insolvency, divorce and MH.

I'm not sure his sympathy was sincere, more a journo's nod to being seen to be impartial (it didn't work).

I'd be banned from MN for posting my thoughts on Reeves. The havoc she's wreaked on the public so far is criminal - and she's not finished yet.

Scot gov budget in Jan - it’s an election year, that’s the only hope I’ve got the SNP won’t immediately follow suit on any property tax rises…

i’m not comforted - even £35 bn (£20 bn plus £15 bn buffer) is going to be raised from an array of methods that all hit the same groups at multiple points. Yay…I’m not at all surprised the Tory party membership is being energised, the tories have a. Wide open goal here to recruit people aged 35 plus who’ve seen that they’re in for years of clobbering from the populists on the left whilst their salaries erode in real terms.

redange · 15/11/2025 12:00

Why is every left wing contributor I hear or see standing up for the BBC, to a man claiming the continued 'corruption' of television and biased political angles presented are genuine mistakes.

The BBC have no moral argument for their actions against Trump and clearly have no 'fear' about repercussions for false broadcasting. If the BBC can run a program consisting of such doctored nonsense, that would do Kim Jong Un proud against the President of the US, what could they do against a normal citizen. The BBC apologists mainly ex employees keep coming on media outlets calling Trump a bully, such arrogance and dissonance towards the corporation actions. The 'bully' in this case the BBC has finally met its match and will be be dealt with !

I suppose he can ask for advice, but will he listen? Can he listen? Is it actually Starmer and Reeves in charge or are the backbenchers?

They have shown that their priorities are staying in office and they have shown fear. No economic advice will help them with that.

I left MN for a long time because of it, around the election. They are still here under the same names. It’s awful. Especially when you are seeing real life consequences of 6th form politics.

Plus they need an understanding when choosing between options. They don’t have that.

That we’re pro business line pre GE - no one they aimed that at believes them. Credibility is completely shot.

Ik. It’s so bad. Driving people off or trying to.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/11/2025 12:19

I think it's good news that the police and crime commissioners are going. I never understood why we had those and that's a saving. Unless politicians find another way to waste it.

redange · 15/11/2025 12:26

If by accident or 'good fortune' you found yourself Chancellor of the Exchequer, (which has happened to Rachel Reeves) surely you would know the job was above your economic knowledge. Therefore, you would know you will have to take considerable amounts of advice from the best Economists, Entrepreneurs tax advisors and those who bring in and keep overseas investment in the UK.

To not do so is actually 'criminal' and malpractice to firstly the country and then to the office of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

CandidLurker · 15/11/2025 12:34

I’m grateful to the person who started this thread as I think it took some courage. Previously, you would see that in any subject relating to politics where someone put forward the mildest non-Labour opinion there would be an almost instant pile-on with insults, condescension etc. I started to recognise the same user names immediately joining a thread, backing each other up. Occasionally some brave soul would put their head above the parapet, get shot down in flames, and disappear.

Yes you’re right. Starmer would have to have humility and accept he needs help. Instead he’s all ego.

I'm assuming this won't affect Scotland yet, as I believe council tax is devolved, but I've mentioned before that F would be large swathes of all the new build estates, populated by mortgaged grafters, and huge amounts of pensioners in the established suburbs.

The problem is how it's calculated, they take I think Band D as an average price for the council area and then apply percentages up and down on either side (or how it was calculated in 1991). So, if you live in an area where there's a lot of deprivation, your perfectly ordinary house is suddenly in F or G, but your perfectly ordinary income won't withstand a doubling of an already steep bill - it's not like living in said areas suddenly makes your supermarket shop, fuel, utilities or anything else commensurately cheaper.

Just discovered my neighbour a recently widowed lady in a bog standard 2 bed bungalow with a handkerchief garden is band F. As are two four bedrooms in the cul de sac. That's crazy.

TenLittleSweetWrappers · 15/11/2025 13:05

@redange

There is evidence of right wing bias by the BBC too. The left tend not to be so vocal about it - or threaten to sue for billions?

Do you think Trump is squeaky clean - or does he ever attempt to manipulate the truth?

We are band F. Just a fairly standard 4 bed detached home on a newish estate. Standard family home yet top 1% of earning households. We live next to people who are in fairly standard jobs. Think gardener, postie, etc. We bought 15 years behind them. Our council tax is already nearly 4K a year. These aren’t loaded people in massive homes. In fact, a few are now rented. So it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
