Labour isn't working - Thread 19

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The weather is awful here.
Bins blown over, garden furniture re-arranging itself etc. Also heavy rain.
I'm very grateful to be WFH today, dh is out on site all day 😬

It’s bloody pissing it down here (Cambs/Suffolk border). I’ve got Cheltenham on the TV (I’m not skiving from my non-work, I work in racing as you know so it’s part of the job), and it looks awful there too.

Not engaging directly with our guests, but I would point out to these visitors that this thread is not a Conservative/Reform thread, it’s a thread for those who don’t like the direction of the current Government. There have been posters from all sides of the political divide with a broad spectrum of views, including disillusioned Labour voters.

I’m a right-leaning centrist, voted Remain and wouldn’t vote Reform if you held a gun to my head. I’ve expressed my views on this thread, some people agree, others disagree, some pull my leg, but ultimately we are respectful of each other, which is far more than I can say of some Labour-supporting posters (on previous threads) who seem to consider people like me the devil incarnate for sending my child to an independent school.

Julen7 · 14/11/2025 13:48

The posts we are getting from t’other side are just planted without any recognition of the current discussion - posts about migrants and Brexit and vapes and rotten teeth. Difficult to know what to say even if you were minded to engage.

It's a timely point. Felt myself limbering up for a scrap there. How's everyone with Storm Claudia? Or, as my youngest has coined, Claudia with a chance of meatballs. We had rainmaggedon yesterday and seem to be dodging the worst of it today.

Edited

Claudia with a Chance of Meatballs!

Now That would take everyone’s mind off the current government fiasco.. Which department is in charge of the weather?

Damnthetorpedoes · 14/11/2025 13:51

Note to self: stay on message.

The message being - a discussion of how utterly awful this Labour government is.

I saw that Reeves is scrapping the heat pump grant. The reason was hilarious - apparently it's because the uptake was predominatly the middle classes. How dare they benefit!

In reality, the grant money isn't enough for cover a new heat pump system, it pretty much just covers the kit before you factor in labour costs plus upgrading pipework and radiators, only those with some money and a commitment to green energy will be remotely interested.

It’s almost like a lot of (the majority of) people homes are not suitable for an ASHP. Who knew?

I think we’ve all endured that, hence this lovely thread

There’s one who thinks some of us are responsible for the shit Labour are in - actually probably just me in their mind on every thread they go on about ‘people’.

So ridiculous and laughable. I should put these powers to better use, the lottery maybe.

Damnthetorpedoes · 14/11/2025 13:53

Yields remain elevated.

Live pricing:

5 year +1.77%
10 year +1.87%

Falseknock · 14/11/2025 13:55

My children go to a lovely independent school. I am protecting my children from racism and ignorance. I own my own business and I voted remain and Labour. I am more centre left. I do all the same things you do and more.

Only the Labour Party could succeed in making private education more ‘elitist’ than they thought it was; whilst at the same time, destroying state education even more. It’s really unbelievable.

I actually have one. But it was because it was genuinely the most suitable option in our particular case, not through any commitment to Net Zero 😄

Falseknock · 14/11/2025 14:03

Schools were fine before the conservatives got their mucky hands on it. I noticed a massive change and that's when we decided to go private. That was 12 years ago.

TheNuthatch · 14/11/2025 14:05

@MantleStatue My mug has arrived. Thank you 😊 I love it!

@Damnthetorpedoes

It wasn’t working before Labour either?
The issue is that we are in financial dire straits post Covid.

It’s the perfect storm for a more ‘extreme’ government to win power.

Should we really bury our heads in the sand about that?
TBH I ‘veer’ towards left thinking - but I think left/right are both necessary.

But I don’t think hard left or right works - and tend to be led by dominant, manipulative, narcissistic leaders.

Has extreme politics ever worked historically - left or right?

MantleStatue · 14/11/2025 14:11

@Falseknock

I think in many schools there is SO much that distracts from basic provision.
Fads, new initiatives, bureaucracy, meetings.
I think it’s essential that leaders in schools are extremely strong, visible and that secure behaviour management systems are in place.
I also think schools tend to medicalise children’s needs before addressing environmental factors.

We’ve got one too. We didn’t choose it, it was already in the house we bought. That’s how I know they’re bloody impractical for a majority of uk homes. I wouldn’t choose it for sure.

We’ve just moved to octopus ‘cosy’ tariff for heat pump homes (or whatever). We’re going to see if it has any impact on our energy bill at all. Somehow I doubt it, but we shall see.

If anyone needs a Friday giggle courtesy of the DM, Mandy has been caught peeing on a garden wall after visiting George Osborne 😂.

I saw that earlier 😬 As I say to my children, should have gone before he left home.
