Is anyone else worried about Sara Cox?

She looks broken! I’m really worried about her. This is an extreme challenge and I’m questioning why we need to watch someone suffer and struggle for charity?
I’m in awe and admiration of her, but I also want to give her a HOT bath and tuck her into a big cosy bed with a gallon of tea and a dozen hot buttered crumpets.
Is it just me?

i did question on the other thread about this how much pressure she would be under to keep going beyond what is sensible. She mentioned she’d damaged her knee in training the other week, I didn’t realise she’s only done 12 weeks of training and hasn’t run marathons before (most people who train for 1 marathon do at least 6 months, not 12 weeks for 5 back to back marathons).

The money and publicity involved is so great there must be pressure to keep going beyond what’s sensible.

I really hope she doesn’t have long term joint issues from this.

I don't listen to her, but I do know who she is. It's amazing what's she's doing. Good on her.

But I also don't follow the whole Pudsey thing every year. In in fact actively avoid it. The lead up is excessive, on TV every night. I seem to remember it wasn't originally an annual event?? Or maybe that was Comic Relief. Either way, I am afraid for me it's a Netflix night.

A couple of years ago she was 17th on the BBC rich list. She is not a minor celeb at all. The more you say it doesn’t make it any more true.

I bet that the celebrities wish that the annual appeal for CIN was in may or june with the chance of better weather and longer days! I remember when it was on inbetween the normal bbc programmes and you had to phone in your donations. The sight of the ‘ big cheques’ from people has also gone too I think !

Shes doing amazingly, you can see and hear how hard shes finding it. The pressure must be huge and this challenge will be taking its toll, physically and mentally..

I do think its ridiculous that she was given 10 weeks to train though.

These “extreme challenges” are ridiculous! Just heard Sara Cox on Radio 2, she sounds genuinely distressed and unable to cope / continue. It’s painful to listen to. The BBC need to seriously consider their approach to fundraising for Children in Need - it’s a great cause, but this is not a responsible thing to expect someone to do.

SC et al are representative of a celeb driven culture,that is performative. Creating a transaction were (some) onlookers become over-invested and emotionally attached. So far (some) posters are inspired, feel sick with worry,etc about the tired trope of celebrity does something arduous for charity. I mean it’s a well worn cliche by now. Celebrities run,jump,swim,dive for charity whilst enduring extreme whatever on camera. What next? celebrity carries a washing machine across the Australian outback for pets/children/charity. Whilst public gasp,and feel inspired.
Soulless is the praise and effusive defence for the whole empty transaction of celeb undertakes arduous look at meee task in media glare knowing it’ll generate publicity and (some) public feel over attached and satiated by the spectacle.

i have no personal issue or malice with sc. I have issue (evidently) with celeb culture and the performative tasks associated with it for charity

If she was really, genuinely 'broken' they would stop it immediately. Of course they would. The very, very last thing the BBC want is to be accused, yet again, of not acting to protect the wellbeing of its staff.

I really like Sara Cox but she knew exactly what she was doing, as did her agent and publicist. It's very, very short term pain for a dramatically raised media profile, book deal, multi TV appearances, pod cast, whatever.

But the tears, the angst, the more tears, the relentless maudlin diatribe from the other DJs (Scott Mills forcing a crack in his voice is particularly annoying), the more tears, the trite little homilies from other B list celebrities, even more tears.......makes for the emotive, self indulgent, sentimental twaddle so beloved by so many.

However, I will donate to Children In Need tonight as I have done for the last 30 years, by the way.

As someone who has run for 20 years and just managed her first marathon last month I think it sounds profoundly awful!

Agree. Performative, generating the celeb on the edge drama that we all know that script . She’s all in, for the praise,book deal. It’s a transaction. Worried onlookers, mn agog. I mean, come on…

While she might be doing it to raise her profile (but why do something that is primarily broadcast on the platform she’s already on?). She has published 3 books, she has a podcast, she’s one of the BBCs bigger personalities (2003-2004 she was 17th highest paid in the BBC). Whether you like them or not- the main Radio 2 presenters are not B list, they’re some the highest paid people in the BBC. She’s not a minor celeb. She already has multiple TV appearances.

Well yes. Surely, surely people realise this? This is an excellent career progression for Sara.

She has the status you and others ascribe to her. IMO she’s minor celeb.

I thought CIN was supposed to entertain us whilst raising money. Watching a woman cry and physically fall apart on live telly/radio is not entertainment.

Maybe we could have a celebrity Hunger Games next year for real, I could think of a few I would like to see do that.
