Friend still believes in "chavs"?

waytoooldforthisshite · 08/11/2025 13:42

Had a funny (well, slightly depressing) conversation today. my friend came round all flustered, telling me that she'd been "harassed by chavs" outside the shop. One was some teenager who asked for her number 🙄

Tried to explain that "chavs" aren't even real, it's a tabloid invented stereotype/myth from the early 2000s that was basically used to demonise working class people. But she just went on about it like she was quoting The Sun from 2004. I ended up showing her this article. She's 39.... and I expected her to know a bit better but what can ya do eh?

Just feels so outdated now. You don't really hear anyone say "chav" anymore (thankfully), and it's weird how those old class-based stereotypes still linger. I honestly felt like I'd timetravelled back to the Little Britain era 😂

Anyone else still know people who talk like that?

Went to a normal secondary school yes. And I'm working class myself for context.

This whole thread reads like you’re conducting research for an OU psychology course.
i know someone who used to write threads on social media to support her arguments in this way

Chavs can be well off too. Fake Louis Vuitton bags and Range Rover Evoques.

Yes,,but don't people usually refer to wealthy people as chavs if they were born working class? I don't think an 'old money'/aristo type youth would be called a chav, even if he behaved in a chavvy way.

Care to explain how it's "batshit" when I've backed things up with reputable sources?

"It was the Tories that 'placed the chav myth at the heart of British politics"

https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/12930/05-10-2011/chav-hate-is-class-hate/ "But the Chav myth dangerously tries to divide sections of working people against one another."

https://eathealthy365.com/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-chav-in-british-culture/ " No, people did not generally self-identify as “chavs.” "

If Cambridge University has an article saying chavs are a myth, I'll believe it over a bunch of anecdotes not to dissimilar to the people who have anecdotes of seeing Nessie or Bigfoot. It's actually worse than that, because "chav" is a myth with roots in class-hatred.

Fuck me… this must be a complete parody piss take post. As someone who grew up on one of the roughest estates in the poorest part of the country I can tell you categorically that chavs do exist. Or, OP, does ‘lived experience’ only count when it’s a certain sort of person talking? Your paternal attitude to policing language fucking reeks of privilege.

LimeShaker · 08/11/2025 17:14

Agree it is not PC to use any longer and disagree with PP who have said it is not derogatory- it is literally an acronym for ‘Council Housed and Violent’ just as NEDs in Glasgow are ‘Non-educated delinquents’ of course it is derogatory.

WonderfulSmith · 08/11/2025 17:06

You can fuck off with that. And I don’t care if I get deleted. Don’t use the death of that poor woman to further your bullshit.

I have to agree with you. Quite shameful to do that @waytoooldforthisshite

There are “Road Man”, of all colours and persuasions, but predominantly black British!

And yes anti social, criminal tendency, “haughty” boys.

Thanks, thought so. A bit like in the US some inner-city white youths also bought into gangster rap sterotypes.

GanninHyem · 08/11/2025 17:14

I grew up, WC, in the north east with "charvas" long before chav becomes the nomenclature. Charvas, and chavs aren't just "working class people", being a chav is more of a mindset than anything else. Lasses and lads I went to school with, grew up in traditional lower/middle class houses definitely morphed into chavs at school, the dress, the attitude etc.

It's exactly the same now. WC people don't have a dress code so saying things like "you're confusing chavs for WC people" is quite frankly offensive at worst, and idiotic at best.

I thought it came from the Romani word 'chavi' meaning youth? Or not?

If you believe in chavs, clap your hands! 👏 😂

Isn't calling someone a scummy fucker just as bad as calling them a chav? Seriously @waytoooldforthisshite give your head a wobble.

In Bristol, "road men" are bottom rung drug dealers, who hang out on street corners with their wares. Here at least, there is no connotation of race.

I’m late to this, but your friend was harassed by a bunch of males and your response was to lecture her on what is PC?

I think the 'council house and violent' thing is a myth.

Kumquatzest · 08/11/2025 17:19

Chav is kind of an outdated 2000s-era term, yes, but groups of teenage boys committing anti-social behaviour and harassing women are still a problem. I think you are focusing too much on the terminology and not on the behaviour that upset your friend.

ForFunnyOliveEagle · 08/11/2025 17:19

Your friend mentioned the word chav and you showed her an article. Fuck me i’d walk out the door and never speak to you again. You’re a bitch OP.

I'm not. I'm saying let's not use her death to further classist propaganda. Sophie Lancaster was the type of person who would've been against classism.

"Chav" isn't a good word, it's a slur that was made up to demonise the working class. More about the chav myth here if you don't mind a bit of a read https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-social-policy/article/owen-jones-2011-chavs-the-demonization-of-the-working-class-london-verso-1499-pp-298-pbk/1F6232EE711CD669AB339522C12FDEC0

"Chav hate is class hate" https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/12930/05-10-2011/chav-hate-is-class-hate/

Lots of good sources on how the chav myth came to originate, its usage and its decline

Edited

Sorry, but quoting an article written by Little Owen Jones as your reference speaks volumes 🤣

I did support her and said I'm sorry that happened but at the same time I said it's not okay to use slurs like that.

We are not the only country to use similar descriptive language for people who behave in an anti-social way or seem unsophisticated/uneducated.

Australia - Bogan, Westie
Germany - Assi
Poland - Dresy
USA - Redneck

etc, etc, etc.

Are you offended for yourself or on behalf of others?

Redneck I wouldn't put in that box. From what I've seen of the US, it's generally used to describe white rural people perceived as 'white trash'/'hicks/trailer trash' etc. Yes, sometimes this is due to antisocial behaviour (though these areas are mostly low crime), but a lot of the time it just seems to be used to criticise rural people who are fond of stereotypical stuff like guns, God, country music etc
There's a huge US problem of opioid addiction & suicide in rural areas, fuelled by unemployment, and I really dislike the way a lot of Democrats have smeared these kinds of people as 'rednecks' & blamed them for voting Trump rather than recognising the economic abandonment that motivated that.

Lauralou19 · 08/11/2025 17:22

Chavs are absolutely real - luckily our town is more rural/outdoorsy and parents very quickly find out if their kids are doing something wrong, so not a hige problem here. But go to the next biggest town and you can find groups of chavs hanging out there.

It doesn’t matter what you call them - if they’re behaving badly, shouting, swearing, vaping, fighting, dressed like their about to rob someone, causing trouble etc, then they’re chavs. Both my kids would be able to point out a group of chavs and thankfully none of their friends behave like that.

Nothing to do with class or money (one of my son’s best friends doesn’t have alot of money and he is one of the most polite and kind kids ive met). Everything to do with parenting and the example we set, boundaries, discipline, aspirations, not allowing your child to roam the streets causing trouble etc.

She was harressed by scrotes. Is that better for you!

NortieTortie · 08/11/2025 17:22

This is such a strange and funny thread.

'Still believes in chavs' like she's talking about being excited for Santa 😂

Can I call a chav a chav if I, too, am working class and was brought up on a council estate? What about self-proclaimed chavs? Do we have a more politically correct term that the chavs' would laugh in your face at?

Unless you knew her personally then you have no right to say what she would or wouldn’t have believed. To say that saying she was killed by a myth is utterly disgusting.
