Friend still believes in "chavs"?

Had a funny (well, slightly depressing) conversation today. my friend came round all flustered, telling me that she'd been "harassed by chavs" outside the shop. One was some teenager who asked for her number 🙄

Tried to explain that "chavs" aren't even real, it's a tabloid invented stereotype/myth from the early 2000s that was basically used to demonise working class people. But she just went on about it like she was quoting The Sun from 2004. I ended up showing her this article. She's 39.... and I expected her to know a bit better but what can ya do eh?

Just feels so outdated now. You don't really hear anyone say "chav" anymore (thankfully), and it's weird how those old class-based stereotypes still linger. I honestly felt like I'd timetravelled back to the Little Britain era 😂

Anyone else still know people who talk like that?

Aww OP....
Just that. Hopefully your friend didn't fall asleep during your lecture.

You are entirely wrong OP. And linking articles with others opinions that match yours will never make you right.

Not all chavs are working class.
Not all working class people are chavs.

Chavs absolutely exist. I grew up in the late 90’s / early 00’s and I hung about with plenty of them.

You cannot out-opinion me of my lived experience.

This thread is hilarious. The OP seems to have some kind of obsession with The Loch Ness monster who she affectionately calls “Nessie” repeatedly and thinks Chavs are mythical creatures. 🍿

What was it?

I’m so confused. Of course there are gazillions of chavs roaming around.. am I missing something?

Plenty of chavs around me, come to Bexleyheath/ dartford/ Erith, spotted by big bows in their children’s hair, fake eyelashes/ lips and screaming at people in the street.

RealPerson · 28/11/2025 17:38

I saw a chav, she was dressed head to toe in Nike at 45 y o and stared me down as I avoided eye contact on the way past in the street
