Guest says I starved her <shock>

Had a relative to stay for a few days, she just wanted to eat all time which we did not expect. I had cooked and baked which she ate (way more than us) then she said she wanted to get up in the night as she was so hungry!

OK. So what did you cook/bake? How often were you eating? And what kind of relative are we talking, here?

WinterBerry40 · 07/11/2025 09:34

Everyone has different appetites , hers is more than you .
I would be upset I'd made my guest feel starved so maybe moving forward have more food in the house and tell your guests in the evening to feel free to help themselves or being something like nice cheese & biscuits out in the evening .

stringsoup · 07/11/2025 09:35

Cousin, full meals - cereal, soup, meat and 2 veg + scones, biscuits, toast

Right. I’m not really sure what you’re wanting from this thread, really? Sounds like she has a bigger appetite than you do. She was rude if she complained, but otherwise… doesn’t feel like a big issue really.

Octavia64 · 07/11/2025 09:40

People have very different appetites.

a classic is that older people tend to eat much less and then when children and grandchildren come to visit they make nowhere near enough food.
i’ve had this and it’s incredibly common.

my 83 year old mum thinks I eat far too much because I want more than one slice of toast for breakfast and can’t skip meals.

if You want to be a good host you need to provide lots of food.

Cereal isn’t a filling breakfast, soup alone can be light unless protein filled and I would need a carb like lentils etc.

Nopayrise · 07/11/2025 09:40

I don’t think I’m a particularly big eater but a bowl of cereal and a bowl of soup wouldn’t keep me going until dinner (maybe not even with a scone and a biscuit in between) if that’s what you’re saying you provided

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 07/11/2025 09:44

Some people eat enormous amounts of food. Personally I can't get away with it any more so tend to eat quite small portions. When family come round, I usually double up the portion size for each person. There might be leftovers but it's better to have too much than too little for guests.

I have to say cereal and soup Would not cut it for me until dinner either: all depends on the soup I guess.

But even if I were starving I’d never say it to a host.

Im also in the massively over cater for guests camp.

JudgeBread · 07/11/2025 09:48

I'd be marvin if all I ate until dinner was cereal and soup to be honest. Neither of those are particularly filling.

What's the meat and two veg plate looking like? Because I went to my aunt's recently and she said she was doing meat and two veg and on my plate I had a single slice of roast beef, two potatoes, a couple of carrots and a little scoop of peas. It looked like a kids meal.

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/11/2025 09:48

I’d take the view that it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. “I’m sorry you were hungry, I thought when I said that you were welcome to help yourself to anything you’d feel able to make yourself some toast / sandwiches / eat leftovers from the fridge” is your response and then just leave it. Unless you live miles from nowhere and she’s physically disabled, there was also nothing stopping her from stocking the fridge with things she wanted to eat, if what you had wasn’t her bag.

WhiteBlankets · 07/11/2025 09:48

She just has a bigger appetite than you and you under-catered for her because you were judging by your own obviously smaller appetite.

Alpacajigsaw · 07/11/2025 09:50

Presumably she could have gone to a shop and bought snacks if she was hungry?

Grotcof · 07/11/2025 09:50

What were you wanting from the thread? Just venting?

It was rude of the cousin to say she was starved when she's an adult who could have got takeaway or went back to her own house.

Cereal, biscuits and toast aren't meals, they're snacks.
Loads of people get used to eating small amounts and don't cater properly for guests, you see threads on here all the time about it.

SirChenjins · 07/11/2025 09:52

Just cereal for breakfast and soup for lunch? I'd be starving too. I wouldn't want to fill up on biscuits, they're a treat not a filler.

Eudaimonia11 · 07/11/2025 09:53

I think that’s more than enough food but I’m average height and slim.

A lot of people nowadays would eat all of that by lunch time!

You haven’t said anything about your guest - are they tall or overweight or an athlete? If they are then always provide more food than you think you need.

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 07/11/2025 09:54

I used to get hungry staying with my grandparents when I was in my late teens and early twenties. Grandma would cook what she considered to be enough food - but this would be maybe one chicken thigh, 2 small potatoes and small portion of veg - i ate far more that they did. I would have considered it rude to say so though. I decided to see it like a starvation retreat!

Yes my Dad's like that tiny portions.

stringsoup · 07/11/2025 09:58

okay, was just giving bare bones here
Breakfast - porridge/granola, greek yog, fruit/ eggs
11am - scone/biscuits with coffee
Lunch - veg/pulse soup. bread, cheese, salami
3pm - scone/biscuits tea
Dinner - Spag bol/curry etc
Sweet treat, coffee

This

Presumably she wasn’t kept prisoner and could have left to buy things? Presumably also she was staying free so expecting to stuff yourself silly on top of free accommodation is a bit much

Grotcof · 07/11/2025 09:59

Semi frozen jelly babies? Your treat of choice apparently

Yes very rude
How big were your portions though were they allowed to dish up.for themselves or did you dish up.for everyone?

I'm small and slim, and that's not enough for me. Cereal is just light carbs, protein is what sustains. The soup might have been protein rich, granted, but the OP didn't say.
