I don't want to pay more fucking tax!

1000 replies

marthainthemarket · 04/11/2025 14:17

I am the sole earner in a family of four, earning just under 40k a year and getting probably fuck all or below inflation pay increase next year, if I am lucky enough to keep my job ( public sector and employer needing to make massive budget savings). I barely cope now.

I am so fucking angry that Labour fucked up the disability benefit cuts. Other countries don't have run away disability benefits crises because they have a proper assessment process that means they keep a lid on people getting disability benefits who don't really need them. But instead of dealing with that, they came up with a crap proposed cut that wouldn't have dealt with the actual issues and they couldn't defend.

And having fucked that up they are now raising everyone's tax. I hate them!

I’m (still) more annoyed at Cameron for the start of all this, namely, austerity and being unable to appease the Rigjht of his party leading to Brexit, which of course led to economic suicide, impounded by Johnson which in turn lead to the rise of Reform. The Tories didn’t want to win the last election as they knew this shitstorm was in the pipeline.

Is that why no-one offered Richi Sunak an umbrella? 😁

100%. We’ve taken one wrong turn after another.

its2025 · 04/11/2025 14:25

No body wants to pay more tax. And TBF no politician would want to raise it either. The fact it hasn't been raised in 50 years shows you how deeply unpopular a income tax rise will be.
The fact that Rachel Reeves is even considering it probably indicates exactly how much deep s**t the country is in.

Nickyknackered · 04/11/2025 14:27

Oh grow up. People want more and more services for less and less tax.

Edited

I'm in deep shit!

And being in deep shit didn't make them come up with a sensible, evidenced and fair way to reduce disability benefits that they were prepared to defend. So no fucking sympathy for their ' hard decisions'.

Let me guess. You can easily absorb this tax rise...

Exactly this. Every word. And yet funnily enough no one ever seems to consider this.

smilingfanatic · 04/11/2025 14:30

The big problem in the UK is everyone wants their slice of the cake, but no one wants to pay more tax.

'Tax the rich' is the usual shite trotted out on this forum. Rich being anyone on over £50K per annum as far as I can glean.

We've all got to pay.

Agree with PP - Brexit is the biggest fuck up of our lifetime. The Tories put us in the position that made it possible. Shameful.

Beenaboutabit · 04/11/2025 14:32

It’s unlikely you will have more deducted from your pay packet if you’re earning 40k (as an employee) than you already do (until you get a pay rise).

The speculation changes week by week from mansion taxes to capital gains tax on the sale of people’s primary residence to cash ISA reductions.

This week it’s all about income tax with several commentators suggesting it would be offset by a reduction in national insurance. If that happens, you wouldn’t have more deductions from your pay. Pensioners who pay tax would pay more, but not you.

But ultimately, nothing will be confirmed until 26th November.

Surprisedavailable81 · 04/11/2025 14:32

Are you a single parent?

Hyperion100 · 04/11/2025 14:33

What baffles me is that very few people seem to link the economic damage from brexit (£100bn per year off GDP, every year forever with about £40bn a year in lost taxation) and the hole in public finances that now needs to be filled.

The remain camp did warn that brexit would make everyone poorer.

Redwinedaze · 04/11/2025 14:35

I’m a single parent, a civil servant working Mon-Friday and work for a supermarket Saturday and Sunday. I work 7 days a week and only just break even and have nothing left. I’m desperately trying to find another role. I’m 50 and exhausted, this will finish me. One of my colleagues also works all week and a weekend in a hotel. Don’t know how we will manage.

BadSkiingMum · 04/11/2025 14:36

The recent BBC Panorama ‘Is Britain Broke?’ sets the reasons out pretty well. I watched it twice, just to fully understand the economics.
It comes down to:

The global financial crisis in 2008
A need for increased defence spending
Longer lifespans with more years of poor health
Higher demands on the NHS
Increased welfare spending
The economic shocks of Brexit and Covid

Your position is a difficult one, to be sure. But unfortunately a penny on basic rate is the best possible way to increase tax revenue.

I don’t think they want to do it.

This. He's sitting with his trotters up (to quote Danny Dyer) and his millions in the bank while we all bear the brunt of the chain of horrors brought on his casual attitude to government. Don't like all this government's decisions but at this point they've been painted into a corner.

TheaBrandt1 · 04/11/2025 14:37

That was scoffed at by pro Brexit crowd as “project fear” wasn’t it? Except it was spot on!

I bet tax thresholds don't rise, so more people dragged into tax and more people in higher rate tax before they touch the actual rates. So whatever pay rise you get, more of it will get taxed than if the thresholds rose with inflation.

Sterlingrose · 04/11/2025 14:38

Have you even bothered to look at how much is spent on disability benefits, how much disability benefits goes unclaimed, how incredibly tiny the rates of fraud are, and how much money is stolen by millionaires in this country? We need to close the tax loopholes for the likes of Amazon and the royal family.

Maybe look up, not down? Disabled people aren't your enemy. The media just wants you to think they are.

orangewasp · 04/11/2025 14:38

I'm an average earner and would rather they just get it over with and increase income tax rather than tinkering around the edges. I do think they also need to rein in the benefits bill and I actually agreed with cutting universal winter fuel payments.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 04/11/2025 14:39

I dread to think what state the NHS would be in without that extra £350 million a week. Thank goodness for Brexit.

You are a bloody hero and I hope that your family love and appreciate you.

The lack of financial support from absent parents (generally fathers) is a national disgrace that no one seems to want to tackle.

Totally agree. It's madness that some some women have children from two or more fathers none of whom contribute anything, or at least not enough.

Bloozie · 04/11/2025 14:51

No one wants to pay more tax.

But the ageing population, cost of the pandemic, Brexit and increased defence costs means we all will have to.

Any political party pretending that we can cut taxes now is lying to you. Even Reform have realised it isn’t feasible and they are normally very happy to park a few buses between their promises and the truth.

I don’t think it was Labour winning the election as much as the Tories putting their hands up and surrendering
I didn’t think it could get worse but it looks like I could be wrong
