What do people consider a comfortable heating temperature ?

I'm not asking about the coldest you can bear, or looking for tips for dressing . I mean walking around in reasonable non summer indoor clothing and then being sedentary watching TV/reading etc. House is small, well insulated, double glazed etc, low bills to date, London.

We have just replaced our creaky old boiler with a silent new one plus (overly complicated ) multi setting thermosat/timer . We are experimenting atm with different combinations of day settings (dislike heating when sleeping). It isn't particularly easy to justad hoc bump up the heating by a bit, unlike our previous rotary dial one.

I had realised our last thermostat calibration was way off when 18C felt toasty and almost too hot. Looking at maintaining 21C/ 22 C on this new system currently. Is that a common preference ?

20c here, plenty warm enough for us. Off completely at night though.

Balloonhearts · 31/10/2025 10:13

20 - 22 ish.

Anditstartedagain · 31/10/2025 10:14

For me it depends on what I’m doing. Doing chores and generally being busy 18c but for sitting down at a desk 20c.

I don’t have the heating on over night.

ThePoshUns · 31/10/2025 10:15

20-22 here as well

2dogsandabudgie · 31/10/2025 10:15

I agree with 20-22. No heating on overnight. Hate being cold.

MumChp · 31/10/2025 10:15

21C.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/10/2025 10:15

20 - 22 and I boost it to 30 now and again, just for ten minutes or so.
I hate being cold.
🤣

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/10/2025 10:16

Agree with everyone so far.

No one has yet posted how they find 11 degrees in a cold damp house absolutely fine.

Sirzy · 31/10/2025 10:17

I think I must run warm. I am currently sat in jeans and a t shirt and according to the thermostat the room is at 17.5 degrees.

I tend to whack the heating around when it’s around 16 degrees for a bit to get the room to about 20.

CatsorDogsrule · 31/10/2025 10:18

This thread is enlightening, I have found my people as usually people say 15 or 18!

Mine is set to 21 - 22, off overnight.

Comefromaway · 31/10/2025 10:20

For me it is 19-20 degrees. However it is important to realise that the temperature of the thermostat is not the same as the ambient temperature of the room.

In our old house the thermostat was fixed on the wall right above a lamp. The heat of the lamp fooled it and so to get the heat on at all we had to have it set to 23 degrees.

Currently our thermometer is in the hall and so 19-20 is about right. When we first moved in it was in the dining room, an internal room that retained the heat and so it was set at 21 in the day. If we move it to a cooler room then we have to set it at 18.

TheChosenTwo · 31/10/2025 10:23

If I’m sedentary (sitting at my desk working or lying on the sofa watching telly) I’m comfortable at 24. 22 is okay but I’d want my heated blanket on me (it’s on me at 24 though tbf but mainly for comfort).
if I’m doing stuff around the house 22 is adequate.
I really feel the cold.

Newmeagain · 31/10/2025 10:25

Agree with @Comefromaway - 19 to 20 is good for me but I really don’t know if that is actually the ambient temperature. I do tend to wear big jumpers!

dontmalbeconme · 31/10/2025 10:32

I'm too hot at 20C. I tend to need to put the heating on if it falls to 16C, and I heat to 18C. I am menopausal, though, plus I consider wearing a long sleeve t-shirt plus a jumper normal indoor clothing for winter.

Same here (Scotland). 20c day time and off overnight. I think it is actually set to something like 12c overnight but the house never gets that cold.

sheistheslayer · 31/10/2025 10:37

I’m ok around 18-19c

carbonelthecat · 31/10/2025 10:44

Ours is set to 18 (off overnight), but our thermostat is in the draughty hallway so it is probably a couple of degrees warmer in the living room where we sit in the evenings. We'll often have a fire in the evening as well on colder nights.

That’s an impressive heating system that can get the temperature up from 20-22 to 30C in ten minutes!

It'll happen!

Boutonnière · 31/10/2025 10:47

Thank you all for your responses - 21C ish looks about in line with many of you. Somebody made a good point about the position of the thermostat - trying to take that into consideration by also using an independent room thermometer.

Comfortable would be 19C but that just uses insane amounts of heating oil so we have it at 17C during the day and off at night. We also have wood stoves in two rooms which helps with the oil bill.

Asunciondeflata · 31/10/2025 10:48

I would agree with everyone on here, 20-21c set for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening. We've got good insulation, so it keeps warm.

ninjahamster · 31/10/2025 10:49

18 here but I keep switching it off as I’m too hot!

That's unusual, because the recommendation is for it not to drop below 18c, for general health, but also to avoid damp in the house etc.
Perhaps your house is very well insulated?

Limehawkmoth · 31/10/2025 10:58

Which and other sites say 18 to 21. Older people a little on higher side
but women feel cold more we do know, so probably women would want it higher, unless having a tropical moment!

i have my bedroom set to 17.5 in evening as I like it cooler at night (it goes off completely at night and during day). Areas like kitchen, dining room and my craft room are at 18.5 , hallways and landing at 17.5 but 18 in morning. And my lounge where I’m most sedentary at 20.5

I have invested in individual thermostatic radiator valves so can have a different schedule and temps for every room. I think it really helps to see temperatures being recorded when I feel cold - I find how much I feel cold can change depending* on time of day surprisingly. And less surprisingly how much I’m inactive. It certainly means I check the temperate in room on app before I turn it up, and if it is reasonable I move about a bit more or use a throw rather than simply turn up.

when I’m just sitting reading or something very passive I do find it just feels cold less than 20.5 . My hands start to get cold and that makes me really feel it,
