What do people consider a comfortable heating temperature ?

I'm not asking about the coldest you can bear, or looking for tips for dressing . I mean walking around in reasonable non summer indoor clothing and then being sedentary watching TV/reading etc. House is small, well insulated, double glazed etc, low bills to date, London.

We have just replaced our creaky old boiler with a silent new one plus (overly complicated ) multi setting thermosat/timer . We are experimenting atm with different combinations of day settings (dislike heating when sleeping). It isn't particularly easy to justad hoc bump up the heating by a bit, unlike our previous rotary dial one.

I had realised our last thermostat calibration was way off when 18C felt toasty and almost too hot. Looking at maintaining 21C/ 22 C on this new system currently. Is that a common preference ?

About 18oC but I'm Scottish and also accustomed to not touching the heating dial through a very parsimonious husband

Flixon · 31/10/2025 20:34

Ive set to 18.5. It’s too cold, so I sit with a heated blanket . But it’s too expensive to set to higher. Off at night. On a few hours in the morning and evening. Costs a fortune even this limited amount of heat. Used to heat to 20 which was lovely!

coldiris · 31/10/2025 20:35

21-22

MotherOfRatios · 31/10/2025 20:42

I run warm blooded and I live in a maisonette but I don't have mine on automatic I turn mine on.

It has to be about 13/14 before I turn it on as I'm warm most times

Tigerbalmshark · 31/10/2025 20:50

18C for us. Hive thermostat so hopefully accurate! We sometimes boost to 20C in the evening so it is warm for baths/bedtimes, but 18C is fine for watching tv, cooking, wfh etc with normal clothes on. Drops to 16C overnight and when we are out and that also seems fine.

Also hate the heat in summer and if I had the option I’d have air con down to 20 all summer long (fewer clothes in summer so 18 might be a bit chilly)

Growlybear83 · 31/10/2025 11:26

Preferably 25 degrees, but I could manage about 22 if necessary

Ah finally. This would suit me just fine 😁

AgnesX · 31/10/2025 20:59

I'm a cold body so 22 to be comfy. Happy for the temperature to plummet at bedtime. No heating on in the bedroom which sits at around 16 give it take.

Flatbellyfella · 31/10/2025 21:13

17 or 18 is plenty warm enough for me, but I do have a denim shirt & Jeans on.

Blarn · 31/10/2025 21:24

We have a small house, good wall and loft insulation but rubbish windows. The thermostat is set to between 16-18, maybe up to 19 briefly on very cold days. I think our thermostat must be set wrong as the settings it is on makes the house toasty warm. I'd prefer the heating off all night but it comes on about 2 for an hour and again at 4:30 as the kids sometimes wake up when it's very cold.

Timeforabitofpeace · 31/10/2025 21:41

19-20.

EasternStandard · 31/10/2025 21:42

19 to 20

RainySundayAfternoon · 31/10/2025 21:49

I think I’ve got used to a lower temperature over the last couple of winters when I’ve been scared to put the heating on!
At this time of year the heating comes on for 2-3 hours morning and evening with the thermostat set to 17/17.5.
The rest of the day if I’m working from home I have my heated throw on my lap - otherwise I get frozen and stiff!

Vaxtable · 31/10/2025 21:54

18/19 degrees for me

KimuraTan · 31/10/2025 22:02

Anditstartedagain · 31/10/2025 10:14

For me it depends on what I’m doing. Doing chores and generally being busy 18c but for sitting down at a desk 20c.

I don’t have the heating on over night.

This. Max we can take is 20.5

Teenage girls would prefer 22 if lounging in barely anything but it’s autumn after all so I insist on warm socks and sensible clothing. 18 for me as I am active and don’t have a desk job. If I have to do any admin you’ll find me in my Oodie 😊

Remember it’s poss your new boiler is also wrongly calibrated.
I keep mine at 19/19.5 degrees

StewkeyBlue · 31/10/2025 22:11

18’ is good for me.

I turned my heating off mid evening tonight because I was far too hot: thermostat said 19.5 degrees.

Denim4ever · 31/10/2025 22:16

Front of our house isn't double glazed as we have original sash windows plus security frame locks. I don't feel the cold and 19-21 is fine for me even on cold evenings. I don't often need a cardigan over short sleeves. During the day if I wfh the temp is 16 and I sometimes wear a cardigan over short sleeves.

DH does feel the cold, I turn heating up to 23 or so for a short while. I never need socks on in the house, but DH and DC do

blueskydays45 · 31/10/2025 22:42

We have a little wheel to adjust temperature in the hall which is generally colder than the other rooms. It's set to 18degrees but the house temperature in the rooms we actually live in is 20degrees ish

TheOpalReader · 31/10/2025 22:48

It's hard to say as the thermostat is in the coldest part of the house. But I have my thermostat at about 17 during the day, then off completely at night. I absolutely hate waking up sweating with dry mouth.

HushTheNoise · 31/10/2025 22:51

18 and a nice fluffy blanket for watching TV in evening. I'd be sweating at 24. But each to their own.

Florencesndzebedee · 31/10/2025 22:57

20-22 bump up to 23 in deepest winter. 19.5 at night

Natsku · 31/10/2025 23:09
  1. I hate feeling cold inside, even though I'm fine with cold in general but I just don't want my home to be cold.
namechangedtemporarily123 · 31/10/2025 23:50

22.5 when WFH. But sat in thermal top, knitted dress, leggings and an extra jumper on top. I really wish I didn’t feel the cold 🥶

ThatsNotAKnife · 01/11/2025 08:07

My bedroom is currently 23.9. Under duvet and not hot.

mamagogo1 · 01/11/2025 08:14

Ours is set on 18, it’s warm (as in no jumper required) but our living room is upstairs which makes a huge difference, heat rises!
