What do people consider a comfortable heating temperature ?

I'm not asking about the coldest you can bear, or looking for tips for dressing . I mean walking around in reasonable non summer indoor clothing and then being sedentary watching TV/reading etc. House is small, well insulated, double glazed etc, low bills to date, London.

We have just replaced our creaky old boiler with a silent new one plus (overly complicated ) multi setting thermosat/timer . We are experimenting atm with different combinations of day settings (dislike heating when sleeping). It isn't particularly easy to justad hoc bump up the heating by a bit, unlike our previous rotary dial one.

I had realised our last thermostat calibration was way off when 18C felt toasty and almost too hot. Looking at maintaining 21C/ 22 C on this new system currently. Is that a common preference ?

I don’t like it on continual even in the day time. When we get up I put it on for about an hour at 22. Switch it off until lunchtime for another hour if we are home at 22. Then in the early evening it goes on for another 2 hours and off for good at 8.30 latest. Upstairs is on a separate thermostat so I usually keep it off upstairs unless someone is sick.

18 degrees. I start to get a headache if it’s any higher.

Allmarbleslost · 31/10/2025 13:28

I put ours on 20. Then DH walks past the thermostat and changes it to 18. Then I put it back on 20. And round and round we go until the weather warms up.

That's unusual, because the recommendation is for it not to drop below 18c, for general health, but also to avoid damp in the house etc.
Perhaps your house is very well insulated?

That’s interesting. When we renewed the heating system in our local grade 1 listed church we were told to keep the temperature at no lower than 12 degrees to avoid damp issues and general deterioration of the fabric.

SwarmsofLadybirds · 31/10/2025 16:58

20 is fine for me, DH would prefer 18ish so we compromise on 19.

IndigoBluey · 31/10/2025 17:00

18 if sitting watching TV in evening. I sleep with window slightly ajar all through window. Have read 21 is optimal sleeping temp but I run warm so cooler is better for me

More than I'm willing to pay for. I genuinely have no idea how people afford 20-21, ours is £118 a month just for 18.5 (dual fuel) and ideally I need it warmer for my chronic pain!

but if ours is set at 20/22c it doesn’t come on so win win for us . We are £110 a month duel fuel and I turn it to 5c so it’s off from April to September.

Hedjwitch · 31/10/2025 17:06

18 during the day. Off at night

18 during the day. Off at night

Ours goes off at 9pm till 8am

Troubler · 31/10/2025 17:08

Pre Dp, the kids and I were happy with 18C and the heating not on overnight.

Dp and his kids plus DD’s boyfriend all walk round the house like they are in the Antarctic if the thermostat is lower than 21C.

ThatsNotAKnife · 31/10/2025 17:09

Mine is 22°, it's OK for me if I'm wrapped up. Yes, I'm also menopausal.

19° overnight. I'm in cosy PJ's and socks at night.

SixSeven · 31/10/2025 17:11

I like it on summer days when my house is around 23°, I can never achieve that in winter though (probably could if I left the heating on for hours) so use heated throws for extra warmth.

BadgernTheGarden · 31/10/2025 17:15

It does depend where the thermostat is and whether you are actually looking at a thermometer in a particular room. I set the thermostat to 22, heating off from 10pm to 6am, if I'm up late I sometimes do plus an hour. Too old to be cold, did that when I was young!

mondaytosunday · 31/10/2025 17:18

The thermostat is set at 18 but I put the fire in in the living room of an evening. During the day when moving around 18 is fine but sitting watching tv I want a bit more

Sunbeam18 · 31/10/2025 17:21

18

I don’t think it is, I just am always hot. I have the heating off and windows and doors open today for example. Drives my family mad! But having the thermostat higher than 18 is excruciating for me.

Same here! Windows in all rooms have been open all day. I closed them about an hour ago. No heating on here. Rooms are between 14 and 16. We're all comfortable. I think its what you get used to. I hate a hot stuffy house so when our heating does go on its set to 17.5 or maybe 18 occasionally.

Seawolves · 31/10/2025 17:27

Hallway and bedrooms are at 18°C, the living room thermostat is set to 22.5°C the room (on an independent thermometer) sits at 19-20°C. Thermostats are set down to 14°C in all areas overnight.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/10/2025 10:16

Agree with everyone so far.

No one has yet posted how they find 11 degrees in a cold damp house absolutely fine.

Ours is never higher than 12 unless it's absolutely freezing but our house isn't cold or damp.
I can't stand being too hot so it's only on for a few hours at a time and definitely not at night.

ChristmasFluff · 31/10/2025 17:30

@ninjahamster I am the same! I love being home because I feel stuffy and hot with anything over 18 degrees. I'm post menopause, but still seem to have my internal heating going.

Haven't put the heating on yet, except to test it. Windows open downstairs until it's dark, and window open all night in my bedroom.

Just checked my thermometer and it's 17 degrees in here. I'm sitting in a thin long-sleeved top (sleeves pushed up!) and leggings, and am very comfortable.

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 31/10/2025 17:43

Thermostat is set to click on of the heating drops below 16 during the day (WFH) and to reach 18 for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening. Back down to come on if it dips below 16 at night.

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 31/10/2025 17:43

edit to remove double post.

Onetimeusername1 · 31/10/2025 17:46

Thermostat is in the hallway, wear jeans, top, light jumper and oodie plus slipper type socks over socks. Sat at desk most of day, 17 degrees seems to be the ideal temperature but have it on at 15/16 most of the time.

GentleSheep · 31/10/2025 17:49

18.5 during the day and I'm sedentary. 20-22 would be way too hot for me.

AngelinaFibres · 31/10/2025 17:49

Thermostat set to 21. No heating when we're in bed. Comes on at 6 til 10 in the morning. Then 5 til 9 in the evening. We have 2 Woodburning stoves too in the living rooms. The small one is currently lit. Cosy toasty.

youalright · 31/10/2025 17:51

20 is our average but will put it up or down when needed
