What do people consider a comfortable heating temperature ?

I'm not asking about the coldest you can bear, or looking for tips for dressing . I mean walking around in reasonable non summer indoor clothing and then being sedentary watching TV/reading etc. House is small, well insulated, double glazed etc, low bills to date, London.

We have just replaced our creaky old boiler with a silent new one plus (overly complicated ) multi setting thermosat/timer . We are experimenting atm with different combinations of day settings (dislike heating when sleeping). It isn't particularly easy to justad hoc bump up the heating by a bit, unlike our previous rotary dial one.

I had realised our last thermostat calibration was way off when 18C felt toasty and almost too hot. Looking at maintaining 21C/ 22 C on this new system currently. Is that a common preference ?

Thank you all for your responses - 21C ish looks about in line with many of you. Somebody made a good point about the position of the thermostat - trying to take that into consideration by also using an independent room thermometer.

Look at putting in a smart thermostat that you can take room to room. A good investment,

better still, but more expensive - do what I did and add on smart radiator valves in all rooms…you can then move to just heating vroom you’re in to temperature needed for what you’re doing in that room. Made significant impact on my bills. , and I know I’m putting chest where I actually need it.

Comefromaway · 31/10/2025 11:01

Yes, I have individual TRV's in every room.

I do have to ensure that some rooms are warmer than we need. When dd was away at uni we switched her radiator right down but she got damp and some of the clothes & shoes she had left behind went mouldy. So now the heating runs in there a few hours every day despite the room not being occupied at all.

childofthe607080s · 31/10/2025 11:05

We run at around 19 during the day and 13 overnight , with radiators turned off in rooms that we are not using ( note to self we have guests this weekend!) the living room gets a little warmer usually - 20 .

thats the coldest we can go for comfort and cost and climate change

If we are sitting still we will use a blanket / throw

cadburyegg · 31/10/2025 11:06

21 degrees

KookyRoseCrab · 31/10/2025 11:09

I’m in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I have mine at 20c it’s not come on and I have a heated throw on when it’s cold

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 31/10/2025 11:10

22-23 for us and we never have heating on in bedroom. Sleep with window open all year round. (London)

emboxing · 31/10/2025 11:12

I have a thermostat and individual TRVs so the thermostat temperature is not the same as the individual room temperatures. My warm rooms are around 20-21 to be comfortable to sit in but the hallways and kitchens are cooler (probably around 18). I close all the internal doors when the heating is on and you can feel the heat difference as you move around the house.

blackheartsgirl · 31/10/2025 11:12

18 to 20 if I’m sedentary
less if I’m moving about.
off completely at night.
although if I’m home alone I turn the heating right down and just put layers on and get into my electric blanket heated bed 😂

Fifthtimelucky · 31/10/2025 11:16

It’s 19 in our sitting room at the moment. I am comfortable in a T shirt. My husband is comfortable in a T shirt and jumper.

We are both happy at 20 but at anything over that I will be too hot. At 18 I might put a cardigan on (especially if I was just sitting around reading) and he’d complain that it was too cold!

TheRelevantTrumpeter · 31/10/2025 11:17

We've got UFH in the kitchen extension, which is also insulated unlike the rest of the house, and 17-18 is fine in there. The living room has got a suspended air gap floor, no cavity insulation and 3 outside walls. I'm happy at 22 in there but it gets down to 12-14 without any heating on. If I could close it off all winter I would.

Mikart · 31/10/2025 11:17

20

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/10/2025 11:19

17-18 during the day, off at night, although it turns on if it's lower than 6 automatically. I'm always warm at the moment, husband would prefer 19- 20 so we do that at weekends when he is home more.

This is illogical

I suspect you have a thermostat irregularity - ie you set it to 17 but it’s actually heating warmer or actually getting to temperature unlike the rest of your house

Growlybear83 · 31/10/2025 11:26

Preferably 25 degrees, but I could manage about 22 if necessary

Peachypips78 · 31/10/2025 11:27

Don’t want to be that person but we never achieve 21 degrees in our house. It is 500 yrs old and stone- we have no central heating so to get it to 21 we’d have to get all fires going at maximum heat. My kitchen is currently 14 degrees and we are all wearing jumpers and are fine. I’ll light the fires mid afternoon.

I would be way too hot at 21 as we have all got so used to the cold.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 31/10/2025 11:28

20-21 is good in our house. Over night I turn top part of house off but leave downstairs on about 18c, the heat rises nicely but bedroom doors closed, so its not unpleasant to come down to in the morning

Chasingsquirrels · 31/10/2025 11:30

Goes on at 7am to 18°c for an hour.

Down to 14°c in the day - if I am home and feel cold I boost it, if I am working at home I have an oil filed electric radiator under my desk that I'll put on for 20 mins.

Then back on around 5pm until 10pm at 18-19°c (couple of evening cycles).

Thermostat on the lounge coffee table near to where I sit.
It is fine for moving around, doing housework, cooking (kitchen is cooler anyway).

In the evening I prefer to snuggle to the sofa with a fleecy blanket rather than have the heating higher. That's a preference for feeling snuggly regardless of the temperature though.

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 31/10/2025 11:36

20 usually here.

If anyone has a Nest and wants to talk me through how to set it to stay off at night I would be very grateful!

77Fee · 31/10/2025 11:37

I like a temperature of 19C but I'll always have a blanket nearby if I'm watching tv.

user1497787065 · 31/10/2025 11:39

18.5 for me but I hate being over warm.

QwestSprout · 31/10/2025 11:39

More than I'm willing to pay for. I genuinely have no idea how people afford 20-21, ours is £118 a month just for 18.5 (dual fuel) and ideally I need it warmer for my chronic pain!

TheRolyPolyBard · 31/10/2025 11:42

I think the number doesn't matter. The right temperature is the one which enables your family to be comfortable sitting on the sofa wearing reasonable clothing. In winter I would say it is reasonable to wear a warm jumper and warm socks indoors.

If your family is comfortable in a jumper at 18°, then set the thermostat at 18. If it's 22°, do that.

If we weren't trying to combat climate change I wouldn't care if everyone sat around naked with the heating at 25°, but we are, so a jumper is reasonable.

cinquanta · 31/10/2025 11:45

The thermostat is set at 16 degrees but it is in the coldest part of the house.

ninjahamster · 31/10/2025 11:49

Asunciondeflata · 31/10/2025 10:55

That's unusual, because the recommendation is for it not to drop below 18c, for general health, but also to avoid damp in the house etc.
Perhaps your house is very well insulated?

I don’t think it is, I just am always hot. I have the heating off and windows and doors open today for example. Drives my family mad! But having the thermostat higher than 18 is excruciating for me.

pizzaHeart · 31/10/2025 12:09

We have it on 19.5 when we are at home with bursting occasionally if necessary and lowering down when going out. We also have thermostats adjusted on all radiators so the bigger bedroom is getting more heat but the smaller bedroom - less. Otherwise the smaller bedroom will be like an oven.
I go around in thin fleece, DD’s in a sweatshirt, we all wear socks and joggers.
