What do people consider a comfortable heating temperature ?

I'm not asking about the coldest you can bear, or looking for tips for dressing . I mean walking around in reasonable non summer indoor clothing and then being sedentary watching TV/reading etc. House is small, well insulated, double glazed etc, low bills to date, London.

We have just replaced our creaky old boiler with a silent new one plus (overly complicated ) multi setting thermosat/timer . We are experimenting atm with different combinations of day settings (dislike heating when sleeping). It isn't particularly easy to justad hoc bump up the heating by a bit, unlike our previous rotary dial one.

I had realised our last thermostat calibration was way off when 18C felt toasty and almost too hot. Looking at maintaining 21C/ 22 C on this new system currently. Is that a common preference ?

18 degrees between 7am and 10:30pm. 13 degrees overnight.
If it is not warm enough at that level I put more clothes on. My house is tiny (4 room bungalow) with no hallway and is quite well insulated. When the boiler fires up it isn't on for long. My monthly energy cost is £45 but I have solar panels too.

My husband would be quite happy with a colder house. I am definitely not happy with that. He has realised that if he wants sex to be a feature in his life then he needs a wife who is warm. No heating/ no sex. We don't stay with his family between October and April because they have no heating, no fires and windows open. Not a chance I'm going to any of their houses

GreyCloudsLooming · 31/10/2025 17:59

I am happy at 15-16 degrees, generally, and actually dislike it above 20. We put heating on if we feel cold. It’s not linked to a thermostat.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 31/10/2025 18:02

20-21 downstairs but 16 upstairs. And I haven’t actually put heating on upstairs yet since summer ended.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/10/2025 18:03

21 here, but always off at night, from around 10 pm.

Ihaveoflate · 31/10/2025 18:07

Our thermostat is set to 19 or 18 during the day and 14 overnight (don't think it ever comes on).

I would find 21 stifling now but I think my parents had the heating set that high when I was a child.

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 31/10/2025 18:08

I like it at 18 but the rest of the family like it warmer - we’ve settled on about 19.5 with a fire in the evening if it’s cold

Pedallleur · 31/10/2025 18:33

Approx 19/20 Deg and set to 14/15 overnight but rarely comes on. It must be cold if it does. Currently on holiday and left it set to minimum. Does the house no favours to be cold. That's how the mould/condensation will start to build up.

museumum · 31/10/2025 19:06

We have it at 18 after school and boost to 20 if we’re sitting down in the evening but leave at 18 if we’re doing stuff.
radiators upstairs are low though so it’s always kept cooler up there.

PlaceIntheClouds · 31/10/2025 19:28

17 or 18 for me. If it drops below 17 I tend to reach for a light cardigan.

Thermostat kicks in at sub 16 daytime.

19 and upwards feels too hot in the winter. I do not like artificial heat because it seems to feel stuffy. The summer warmth is fine because we can have the windows open and get a good circulation.

MonGrainDeSel · 31/10/2025 19:29

We have it set at 21 in the morning for a couple of hours. Then it goes down to 17 but I have a small oil heater in my office if I need it, which I rarely do. It takes hours for the temperature to actually drop to 17 and by then I have nearly finished work and the heating comes on at 5 set to 21. Sometimes I put the oil heater on at 3ish on a really cold day. Overnight it's on 16 but it barely ever comes on - it has to be sub-zero outside. The house is really well-insulated and also a mid-terrace so the heat stays in.

RaininSummer · 31/10/2025 19:30

Nineteen maybe with a sofa blanket if very sedentary. Haven't got my heating on yet but the time is fast approaching.

ExhaustedAndProbablyDrunk · 31/10/2025 19:32

18°c is the minimum before our heating kicks in at this time of year. If I’m cold I’ll bump it up to 21.5°c for a few hours.

Zempy · 31/10/2025 19:32

22 degrees and I wear loads of layers and wrap up in blankets.

Heating off overnight unless it’s really icy/snowing

Bellabomb · 31/10/2025 19:36

Bedrooms are about 16-17°C.
Living room, with the woodburner alight, is currently 26°C (I might take my jumper off in a minute!).
Rest of the house is about 18°C.

Most of the heat in the house comes from the woodburner.

spoonbillstretford · 31/10/2025 19:38

Depends where your thermostat is. Ours is in the hall, so if it says 20C it's usually a degree or two warmer in the living room which is nice for sitting in.

Humidity levels make a difference though too.

JohnTheRevelator · 31/10/2025 19:50

21/22 for me. If it goes below 20 I really start to notice it.

Chinsupmeloves · 31/10/2025 19:51

When we had a modern boiler about 18 or 19. X

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 31/10/2025 19:59

15 or 16 usually. Occasionally 17 but never more. If I get too warm my asthma kicks off. Plus we have a large woolly dog that can't cope with heat.
We'd rather put sweaters on than turn the heating up

abracadabra1980 · 31/10/2025 20:01

20/21

GarlicHound · 31/10/2025 20:05

MumChp · 31/10/2025 10:15

21C.

Same here. And I CAN tell when it's only 20! I can put more clothes on, but my hands and face don't lie.

RedRiverShore5 · 31/10/2025 20:08

Ours is about 18-19 during the day, 20-22 when sat down for the evening, off overnight unless about 15c

hexsnidgett · 31/10/2025 20:17

It varies between 16.5-18.5°C during the day, I couldn't cope with 20°C.

Tiebiter · 31/10/2025 20:19

We haven't had heating on yet. I have no idea what temperature our house is but I think I would be hot if we had it on now.

EnchantingDecoration · 31/10/2025 20:22

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 31/10/2025 11:36

20 usually here.

If anyone has a Nest and wants to talk me through how to set it to stay off at night I would be very grateful!

Turn off all the smart features and just use it as a programmable thermostat. It drove me mad when we first got it.

We have ours set to 13 overnight so ot doesn't come on except in the most extreme cold (never most winters here).

18 for an hour or so in the morning, it's been coming on most days for the ast month or so.

16 during the day, we are either out or pottering around, no WFH.

18 all evening but if I settle on the sofa I tend to turn it up to 20. The thermostat is in the living room away from heat sources and draughts. I run warm

At work (office job) I keep my office at 21-23 (got my own HVAC unit but the thermostat is rubbish and I switch it on and off manually) and have a thermometer on the wall. Need it warmer for sitting still for hours.
