And the emojis.

Very pleased with the result of GBBO (won’t say who in case it’s a spoiler!). And I’ve baked my Christmas cake today, which is looking very good. (Even if I say so myself).

Me too, the right winner

I haven't dived in, yet. I may watch one out of sheer curiosity. I won't stick with it if it's all daft super chunky knitting.

Super chunky knitting is my favourite. Pity about Tom Daley, but it was gentle viewing.

placemats · 04/11/2025 21:40

I've only baked a Christmas cake once. Delia Smith recipe: it was interesting. I may bake a ginger cake/loaf this year, that I can do with deliciousness.

The first one is. But it's fun. None of the knitter's were a fan of chunky knitting either. It's a bit weird because obviously they have hours to knit, like 12 hours.

I wonder how many days that's over? Knitting at that sort of gauge is so hard on the hands.

🙈 Fair enough. I was answering directly and honestly (that had been my thinking when I said not in all contexts). Ah well!!

If you genuinely meant it is only not misogynistic in the context of fantasy films and fairy tales etc., but is when used as an insult, then we are in agreement.

How about Parkin? I have never made it but am thinking about giving it a go.

Yes, I make Delia’s Classic Christmas cake. It’s very good, and seems to be a very reliable recipe - I’m not much of a baker, but it always turns out well.

My son in law bakes a great Parkin.

bombastix · 04/11/2025 22:00

Parkin is excellent. Treacle and golden syrup. Mmm

PickAChew · 04/11/2025 22:01

I don't bake much, these days. I did my monthly cake for the freezer for DS2's lunches, this afternoon. GF carrot cake. He's not GF but I can't use muggle flour without consequences so he has to put up with the variable results. I managed not to turn this one into a lump of fruity chipboard.

Evenstar · 04/11/2025 22:04

I bake all the time for social events at my church, I am planning lots of Christmas cakes this year, 12 mini ones for my friends at the early service on Sunday, 2 large gluten free, one for us and one for the vicar and his family and one for a friend who has had a sudden bereavement 😔

I probably need to make a start soon!

PandoraSocks · 04/11/2025 22:05

I make good pastry (ice cold hands 😄) but am not so great at cakes. They never rise well for me.

Chris from
The BBC
Mason

Speaks so sloooowly

It is sooooo
Annoying.

placemats · 04/11/2025 22:20

I can't imagine any Labour MPs talking to Chris

Mason

PickAChew · 04/11/2025 22:26

Is

Supplysupport · 04/11/2025 21:25

First time in my life I've been called a commie! I don't automatically defend my dh when he fucks up, let alone random comrades. That s such a shit insult. It would be a shit insult even if it was true, but so blatant a lie makes it even more shit.

There is a whole raft of space between far right reform bull shit and communism, and if you think we are communists you must be incredibly right leaning.

We have the football on.

My bloke’s pet name for me is pinko, commie slimeball. Such a Basil Fawlty term of endearment! 😂

I’ll go after this. FYI I’ve only ever voted Labour or independent. When I’ve voted. But I haven’t voted Labour since the Ed Milliband debacle (another lefty fcking over his own). I’ve never voted Tory. I will next time. Wasted vote or not. Who knows what’ll happen in the next few years.

And if you believe this, I've got a bridge to sell you...

I make a mean ginger cake (including a GF version) but have not tried parkin. Definitely going to now.

Same, Pandora! I can make a banana bread but that’s about it. My mince pies and shortbread are bloody excellent though.

cardibach · 04/11/2025 23:34

On the subject of telly - I’ve just finished series one of Slow Horses, having been pushed by my daughter and it was very good. I shall continue.
Id forgotten The Diplomat was back - need to catch up with that.
I have been watching Worlds Apart on All4 - very gentle programme where senior experienced travellers are paired with young people who have never travelled (or never alone anyway - most never). The challenges are a bit incidental (and also a bit unfair I think) but the chats between the unlikely pairings are lovely.

We've been watching Worlds Apart too. It was easy viewing but I agree, some of the challenges seemed a bit unequal. All the contestants seemed nice, I really wanted them all to win.
