Which accent adds an extra r sound to drawing?

So that it sounds like drawring?

That’s all thank you. It’s annoying me that I can’t remember which accent it is.

TIA

No. Draw-ing. I don’t add any extra sounds.

For me the ‘aw’ sounds the same as ‘or.’ How does ‘aw’ sound for you?

This is fascinating. If I say the word without the “r” sound it sounds funny, like a child is saying it when they can’t say their “r” properly. Like “dwawing”. It sounds like “draw-wing” to me.

It is fascinating, it makes me sound like Delboy if I try and take the R out and make it a W sound.

I’m Scottish so /aw/ and /or/ are different: in the latter my tongue curls into an /r/ whereas in the former it doesn’t.

Aw sounds like awe or sounds like or.

RaraRachael · 29/10/2025 22:37

Or and aw sound completely different to me. I pronouncs words exactly as they're written. So or has a very definite r sound.

Ooogle · 29/10/2025 22:39

I can’t figure out how it would be pronounced not like draw ring. To me drawing rhymes with boring

Aw sounds like awe or sounds like or.

I love this, or and awe are exactly the same for me, south.

Overthemoun · 29/10/2025 22:43

Drawing rhymes with moaring for me. Bizarrely I don’t really pronounce my ‘r’ sounds but add them here. Awful is orful.

Yes I can’t hear it - it isn’t a hard W.

Simple. Draw- ing.
Don't see how that's so difficult.

Knowsley · 29/10/2025 22:48

What is moaring? @Overthemoun
Draw is [drɔː]. Drawing is [drɔː] with an ing on the end.

CrushingOnRubies · 29/10/2025 22:48

Cornish accent does.

Humphreyhen · 29/10/2025 22:50

schroeder · 29/10/2025 20:14

Huh? I thought everyone said it like that.

If you’re talking English speakers worldwide definitely not.

Do you have a little break between draw and ing? I can hear that in an American accent it wouldn’t sound like draw ring to be fair but not figure out which British accent.

your post is a little patronising to tell me it’s simple and you don’t see how it’s so difficult. I appreciate that many people don’t add the extra r and am not accusing them of lying. I just can’t hear how that’s all

DanceMumTaxi · 29/10/2025 22:51

Birmingham and other nearby towns would say draw-ring.

But why is that extra r sound in there?

As a matter of interest…those who say draw-ring, do you also say caw-ring (as in the crows are cawing) and saw-ring (eg they were sawing up the wood)?

RaraRachael · 29/10/2025 22:59

@Ooogle it's just drawing, no break.
I didn't mean to be patronising but so many times on here people don't seem to understand that across the UK people talk differently.

I've been told I'm ignorant or that I mispronounce words just because I don't have a Southern English accent

Yes sawing is like soaring - they sound the same to me

I think the confusion is coming from the fact that we genuinely don’t know what ‘aw’ it sounds like if it doesn’t sound the same as ‘or’ rather than we’re putting an extra R in. We need a sound recording of the difference!

TokyoSushi · 29/10/2025 23:00

Draw-ring, Warrington.

I definitely understand that there’s different accents, I’m genuinely just struggling to imagine how the aw sound sounds if not the same as or. As in, I just can’t hear it in my head although I know I must have heard people saying it differently based on this thread!

Saw and sore sound identical to me though I think the r is less pronounced in sawing than drawing.

It sounds the same to me but I can see how they sound different in a rhotic accent, where the “r” in “or” would be explicitly pronounced

Would this help?

I don’t think ‘aw’ sounds like ‘or’ in most accents?

FenceBooksCycle · 29/10/2025 23:05

I'm finding it impossible to imagine how it could possibly pronounced without a tiny little R sound. To get the mouth from the OR vowel of the first syllable to the ing of the 2nd, you'd have to go to superhuman effort to not allow a little bit of R consonant to ne formed as your lips pass from one position to the other. Surely loads of accents do this.
