So that it sounds like drawring?

That’s all thank you. It’s annoying me that I can’t remember which accent it is.

TIA

I remember the bloke who presented Art Attack said it like this and it was the first time I’d ever heard anyone do that! He’s a Scouser.

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 29/10/2025 21:08

I said Drawring in a reading test at school once and it lowered my score even though I knew what it was , that was how we pronounced it. We had recently moved areas, I was from Manchester.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/10/2025 21:13

I say 'draw-ring' - Scouse accent. To be fair, the 'g' disappears...

Lilyowl · 29/10/2025 21:13

I mean "aw" is the same sound as "or" no? Hence why it sounds like there's a second "r" in it?

Tapsthemic · 29/10/2025 21:14

VikaOlson · 29/10/2025 20:55

I've just noticed I say sawing with less r than drawring.

That’s interesting! Sawing is “soaring” for me 😆 this is really cracking me up 😁

leporello · 29/10/2025 21:17

My Bristol cousins say drawlin

ConcordeSkyHigh · 29/10/2025 21:18

I'm in SE and its like droooring board. But DF is from NW so maybe I've got a hybrid accent going on.

And me. Didn't realise I added extra R's.

Sawing - how on earth do you say that without adding a R 😂

I’m trying but I can’t see how! I love this for us 😆

GiddyDog · 29/10/2025 21:24

As a Scottish person this confused me so much when I was pregnant and frequenting baby name boards! People would ask how certain names were pronounced and there would be extra R's all over the place that made no sense to me.

tinytemper66 · 29/10/2025 21:39

I tend to say drawing when it is a noun but drawring when I use it as a verb. Am from south west Wales.

Ozgirl76 · 29/10/2025 21:42

I’m from Sussex and I say “droaring”.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone pronounce the W! But now I’m in a cafe saying both slightly under my breath like a lunatic.

GreyCloudsLooming · 29/10/2025 21:44

I’m from Yorkshire but have lived in London for decades. I say draw-ing. There’s no extra R.

Ozgirl76 · 29/10/2025 21:45

MagicLoop · 29/10/2025 20:07

It's not a specific accent imo, it's just a relatively common pronunciation mistake/feature in quite a lot of southern English accents. Children also quite often do it but some grow out of it.

It’s not a mistake you loon! Any more than it’s a mistake to say “barth” or “grarse”. It’s just accent.

a mistake would be when people say v for th.

utterflapdoodle · 29/10/2025 21:45

There is actually a name for this. It's called the intrusive R.

Wikipedia says "intrusive R may occur between a root morpheme and certain suffixes, such as -ing or -al. For instance, in words such as draw(r)ing, withdraw(r)al, or Kafka(r)esque."

As a Scot I don't use the intrusive R myself and I've always noticed it in south English accents e.g. law (r)and order, claw(r)ing, draw(r)ing.

Honestly I find it a bit annoying and not the nicest sounding way to pronounce these words but I suppose to many it sounds totally normal and they don't even notice it.

Suffix - Wikipedia

Ozgirl76 · 29/10/2025 21:48

This is fascinating. If I say the word without the “r” sound it sounds funny, like a child is saying it when they can’t say their “r” properly. Like “dwawing”. It sounds like “draw-wing” to me.

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 29/10/2025 22:04

Yorkshire does. Broad Yorkshire at least.

RaraRachael · 29/10/2025 22:09

schroeder · 29/10/2025 20:14

Huh? I thought everyone said it like that.

Why would it? There's not an r after the w.

It's so weird that a lot of Englisb accents add r when there isn't one like drawing but omit the r sound in words like cart.

Ov course @Thecarstairsitreallyhurtsmegirl naebody speaks richt apart fae us 😅

Draw-ing not draw-wing

How embarrassing for you not to realise that in lots of parts of the country (like Scotland) we don't add random Rs to words.

Hannah not Hanner. Drawing not Drawr-ring.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/10/2025 22:11

Posh Bristolian = drawring.
Common Bristolian = drawlin.

ProfessorRizz · 29/10/2025 22:12

Thecarstairsitreallyhurtsmegirl · 29/10/2025 20:16

Nope in Doric NE Scotland it would be
Draain.

My mum is from Eberdeen and used to correct me saying ‘draw ring’ aaaaaaaaaaaaall the bloody time Grin drove me bananas as a kid

Nineandahalf · 29/10/2025 22:17

How do you pronounce draw?

I think I make it sound like
Dror. or and aw sound the same maybe?
Let's dror
Let's do some droring

That reminded me ,we weren't allowed to say aipple..it's a Apple.

RaraRachael · 29/10/2025 22:28

My mother wouldn't let us speak Doric in public, only at home. She was horrified when I asked for a slider in an ice cream shop instead of a wafer.
