Lighthearted thread.. but I can’t get out of my head what one kid said to me a couple weeks ago.

For context I run an after school club and it’s great and their a wonderful bunch.. however during snack one child was inspecting her crisps.. then looked to me and asked “Miss.. did they have crisps back in your day or did you just eat bread and porridge?”

I’m not even 30 yet 🤡

We play music in our office, and the twenty somethings often don’t know who some of the artists are.

People who’d I’ve thought would be universally known.

It’s quite concerning.

Oh god, I’d hope this isn’t me but I’m generally useless with music anyway. I’m very much ‘a bit of everything’ my playlist ranges from Elton John to Eminem 🤣 - that said, I’m terrible for not knowing an artist by song anymore.. I think because songs are just too easily accessible you don’t really need to find out anymore 🥲

Friend once started a question to her mum with the brilliant intro of: "Mummy, when you were little and people lived in caves...."

I just laughed out loud at that!

My goddaughters think it's hilarious that I was born in the last century...

TraumatisedAdult · 28/10/2025 15:49

I got told that clothing/home decor/accessories from the 90s were considered vintage.

🤣 that is quite brilliant! On the contrary, I love it when kids try and guess my age. I get anything from 7 to ‘99bajillion-trillion’

Mine have said:

”Were there dinosaurs when you were a child?”

”Did you have Action Man, when you were alive Daddy?” to DH, aged 34

”Was everything black and white when you were a child?”

DGC:

”Grandma is very old? When is she going to die?” (Me in my 60s)

Oh how charming! 🤣

My 6 year old recently discovered that eventually everything living, dies. She said “if people die when they get old, will you die soon?” I laughed and said no way I’m not that old! In fact I’m still young🤣 then we laughed about her calling me old.

My teenager keeps reminding me I was born in the 1900s

I’m a 90’s kid and I feel like kids today will just never understand how much better things were. Outside on bikes with no phones just a time to be home, or when it starts getting dark.. would I let my children outside on their own to ride up and down streets where I can’t see them? Absolutely not at the age I was!

I used to teach and kids were always saying things that made me feel like a fossil 😅

Minto111 · 28/10/2025 16:07

I work with 13-14 year olds. They told me the other day that they had no idea who Britney Spears is.

Coffeeishot · 28/10/2025 16:08

I have just been on a bus just as school was getting out bus load of young teenagers and they just kept shouting out noises and random words. I have no clue what was going on !

Topseyt123 · 28/10/2025 16:11

My three are now aged between 30 and 23.

All have at one time or another raised an eyebrow at my date of birth (1966). DH's too, and he was born in 1963. I think that just sounds like it must have been some other lifetime to them. 🤣

In fact, I am convinced that my now adult children all think that DH and I must have already been ancient the moment we were born! 🤣

Lol. Age is definitely relative.

I remember when I was a child- I thought that anyone in their 20s was old, and anyone in their 30s was ancient.

We see things differently as children

Minto111 · 28/10/2025 16:13

Time and age are such a funny thing.

I was born in the 1980s.

I remember thinking that the 1970s were such a long ago age. Ages and ages ago. Like another time.

Because the 1970s happened before i was born.

Even though the 1970s were only 10 years ago at the time

Coffeeishot · 28/10/2025 16:13

The "girl" i used to babysit for is turning 40 next week.

My Dad was a teacher (decades ago now). The children would ask him about the olden days when he was a little boy. 🤣

So it isn't anything new.

Minto111 · 28/10/2025 16:14

Oh yes. Seeing my cousin 's daughter who i remember as being about 4, go to University. Where did the time go

MaggieBsBoat · 28/10/2025 16:16

My 10 year old asked me if I remember life during the Second World War. I told him that strangely I do not. If I did, he wouldn’t exist.

Evolutionarygoals · 28/10/2025 16:19

DD (5) asked me who had done the very first painting. I was busy explaining how early humans painted on rocks and in caves ~50,000 years ago and she asked me if I was an early human. No...no I'm not...and neither are my parents...

My DD14 said to me that as I might as well have my boobs chopped off as I dont need them anymore (I’m in my fifties) …oh the innocence of that comment 🤣

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 28/10/2025 16:36

I said I got rid of my eyebrows in the 90's.... my daughter (not great with numbers) said 'in the 1920's mum?"
