Lighthearted thread.. but I can’t get out of my head what one kid said to me a couple weeks ago.

For context I run an after school club and it’s great and their a wonderful bunch.. however during snack one child was inspecting her crisps.. then looked to me and asked “Miss.. did they have crisps back in your day or did you just eat bread and porridge?”

I’m not even 30 yet 🤡

5yo DS proudly told me that he knew pictures (photographs) used to be on paper in the ‘olden days’.

😂😂 I saw a post on social media the other day where a woman offered to take a picture of a group of teenage girls with one of those new versions of the instant print cameras - like old school Polaroid cameras.
One of the girls said “you just push the button on the top” 🫠🫠😂😂😂

It can be depressing when you realise all the music l/cultural references that felt sooo important mean nothing.

As a child/teen who grew up with harry potter - the fact it’s seen as old and vintage and that soon there will be brand new faces associated with the fanbase. Time is nothing. 🥹

People have 90's dress up parties.

You can buy 90's dress up clothes in shops

My dd waited until the silence between wedding speeches to turn to my MIL and ask "Grandma, do you remember the Great Fire of London?"

We hadn't even briefed her. 🤣

😂 Brilliant!

I remember saying that we didnt have the Internet 'in our day'

The kids looked at me like id grown an extra head

One rang grandad (who is the font of all knowledge in our house) who backed me up and said that if he wanted to find out something,he walked to the library and found the relevant book

The way they reacted made me feel soooo old!

I grew up in york and York minster was hit by lightening in 1984

I clearly remember talking about it at school the following day

The kids where taught about it and couldn't believe I was around then and remembered it clearly (I was 6!)

We listen to a local radio station in the car whose tagline is “Retro 80’s, 90’s and more!”.

Its mostly classic rock - think Queen, AC/DC, Bon Jovi etc - all the greats!

Then the other day on the way to school pick up, I hear the intro to Nickleback’s “How You Remind Me” 🫠🫠🫣🫣🫣

Thats now classed as “retro” music?!! 😳🤯

This reminds me of being in a branch of B&Q last year and they were playing All The Things She Said by t. A. t. U (I had to look up how to spell it!) and it reminded me how it was so 'controversial' when it came out... and now people are choosing between different shades of magnolia paint with it playing in the background...

@MissAmbrosiai watched the fall of the Berlin Wall live with one of my kids 😂

Kids have it so easy now

When I was in school, we didnt have the internet or google or anything at home. It was just beginning to start

I told DS15 my friend had worked for BT for 40 years.

“what’s BT?”

How bonkers that within a generation such a recognisable brand is so non-existent.

Just today, discussing Patrick Swayze and Dirty Dancing with my 22yr old son and his 19yr old girlfriend. They’d never heard of Patrick OR DD - I said one of the best movies of the 80’s to which my sons gf replied oh I don’t watch old films like that! 😳🫣😳
Old???? DD is not old 😂😂😂😂😂

That’s nothing. I was talking about a “sliding doors” moment at work & had to explain the reference to a 30y old. Like your situation, “oh, I don’t watch old movies”

😲

DH was studying Computer Science & Maths at university when we met back in 1991. I remember him telling me about something called 'email' which sounded impossibly techie (and was only available between universities, I think?). I was still actually handwriting all my essays as an undergraduate, too!

Ok I get that no problem,I thought it may have been some obscure teen reference.
Thanks you 🙏

I think teenage 'shipping' is when you link a couple together in a relation'ship'. Like you would really 'ship' (shit, I don't know any young celebs) Keanu and Sandra Bullock for example.

But don't quote me on this, I'm not up on teen speak!

My eldest DC has been learning about “technology through the ages” at school - starting with the invention of the lightbulb and working their way up to present day AI development etc.
She came home telling me all about dial-up internet and how it worked……
And I was just there like “🤨🤨 Don’t cite the deep magic to me Witch! I was there when it was written!”

Did you do ‘the noise’?

Oh wow, this is the most disturbing on this thread imo!
But so true, I didn't even realise how "old fashioned" it must be to think of photographs only being on paper.

See also when slides actually were “slides” - the tiny transparent pictures put into a projector.

I recently asked an elderly netball player (now chair of a netball club) if they wore trainers for netball back in the day. She said that girls at school would wear plimsolls for netball; adult players did wear trainers, but they were called “netball shoes”, were big and clunky, and definitely not fashion items like they are now. She also described the netball “uniforms” as they were then.

On the subject of photographs.. I’ve noticed how hard it is to find a proper, big thick photo album these days?!

I tend to use FreePrints every months to print off some/any pictures of certain memory’s or favourite random snaps of the month and pop them into photo albums; but the only photo albums I have are the small one photo per page, 10 page little booklet jobbys! I want an actual, nice looking, big photo album that will hold a decent amount of photos! So if anyone knows where to look please tell me 🤣

I’ve been asked if I got the cane at school. It was rare in my parents’ time!

You must be very young. I’m 57 and the cane was still around when I was at school.

I am 41. My mother was hit and slapped at school.

When i was at school in the 90s there was still one teacher who used to slap pupils with a ruler. She only slapped the male pupils for some reason
