Lighthearted thread.. but I can’t get out of my head what one kid said to me a couple weeks ago.

For context I run an after school club and it’s great and their a wonderful bunch.. however during snack one child was inspecting her crisps.. then looked to me and asked “Miss.. did they have crisps back in your day or did you just eat bread and porridge?”

I’m not even 30 yet 🤡

I got told that clothing/home decor/accessories from the 90s were considered vintage.

How rude! The 90s were only 4 years ago at most.

A couple of months ago I was hanging a picture with some directions from a teenage. Teen was going "higher, higher, lower" and I replied that it was like being on Play Your Cards Right. I got a blank look, a question of "what does that mean?" and my soul broke a bit.

@Minto111 @Thecarstairsitreallyhurtsmegirl I'm glad it's not just me, actually she's talking about relationships, no idea if it's only used at her school or wider. She usually says something like "OMG guess what Ely is shipping Meg but last week he was shipping Joe and he is now shipping Luca, can you believe it!!!(high pitched squeal)" Me: I could do with a cruise holiday...

Now that we have a few apprentices in work, the generation gap sometimes astounds me. Their vocabulary is often completely different (well, lacking). I've been asked what normal phrases mean so many times. The most recent one was "it's a means to an end." i.e. a completely normal use of language, and they just had no idea what I was talking about. My kid who is only 2 years older would know such a phrase as his vocabulary is not bad but even he surprises me sometimes.

It's quite worrying, such a lack of knowledge of language, and I think it's maybe down to young people not reading literature or quality newspapers and maybe only scrolling youtube in their spare time rather than watching quality television.

Have they never been to a primary school fair?!

RampantIvy · 28/10/2025 17:53

On Pointless today, a young man said "I have never heard of QI"

Curledupball · 28/10/2025 17:53

my kids aged 12 and 7 asked me how I met daddy. I told them we met in Starbucks and their jaws hit the floor…”wow! I didn’t know Starbucks was around in the olden days”.

🤣🤣🤣.
I only learned that term recently when I was listening to a podcast about the incredibly recent 90s. On the episode about The X Files the Mulder and Scully Shippers were mentioned and I honestly thought they were referring to zealous fans who sent them stuff in the post!

When my DS was small he asked me if I had electricity when I was a child ...

A friend who is nearly 20 years younger than I had a Dark side of the moon t-shirt on. I was so thrilled. Was that her favourite Pink Floyd song/album? She didn't know who they were ...

I had that with a young person and a Ramones t shirt. She didn't even know they were a real band 😧

DH showed his young nephews his singles collection and record player. They honestly thought they were powered by some mystical, magical force. Yet they are completely accepting of 'their' music just manifesting out of thin air straight into their ears (which is, quite clearly, witchcraft).

scalt · 28/10/2025 17:59

I’ve been asked if I got the cane at school. It was rare in my parents’ time!

TyroleanKnockabout · 28/10/2025 18:02

Loving the confusion about shipping on this thread!

If you want two characters in a book/tv show to get together, you are ‘shipping’ them.

My 22 year old has never heard of, or seen a reel from Garron Noone.

Sasssquatch · 28/10/2025 18:41

I was talking to my daughter about the arctic monkeys. Who I think of as being young whippersnappers. I said “oh I’d love to see them live” and she said “are they still alive?” 😭

Well I don't think that's an age thing. Garron Noone is not that famous

Minto111 · 28/10/2025 18:43

We are old!

I need to start hanging around with older people.

My 67 year old mother hangs around with 80 year olds, and they constantly call her "the young one"

WhatIsTheCharge · 28/10/2025 18:44

My eldest DC has been learning about “technology through the ages” at school - starting with the invention of the lightbulb and working their way up to present day AI development etc.
She came home telling me all about dial-up internet and how it worked……
And I was just there like “🤨🤨 Don’t cite the deep magic to me Witch! I was there when it was written!”

He is only really famous In Ireland. And even in Ireland, he is not that famous.

I actually met him on a train. We sat next to each other fot three hours on a train haha.

He is a content creator. He does very loud, funny videos on instagram, but in real life he was very shy and quiet.
