Do you do ‘girl dinner’?

I mean just having snacky things instead of dinner if you find yourself not having partner/kids to feed.

I do it whenever possible - if it’s only me (and it doesn’t happen that much) I will have something like a few cornichons, slice of ham, chunk of cheese, few cherry tomatoes and a handful of nuts. All eaten standing up at the fridge/counter. No washing up. No prep time. Love it.

Was talking to a friend recently and she said if she ever has to only feed herself she will still do a proper dinner and sit down at the table to eat it. Can’t think of anything worse myself.

Maybe I’m just fed up of constantly feeding everyone.

Anyway today DH and DC have been out at an all day thing and have eaten on the way home and I’ve just had half a tub of olives, few slices of salami and a stack of Pringles and couldn’t be happier.

I'd do it your way too. Mines only 3 but with all the stress of mealtimes I'm happy to not cook😅

JulianClarysDog · 26/10/2025 18:14

God, I’m with you! I’ll happily make myself an easy salad or omelette at lunchtime but if my husband is out in the evening, and I don’t need to cook, then I have a bowl of porridge or some yoghurt, a banana, some raisins.. Like you but I’m sweet-toothed.

DickDewey · 26/10/2025 18:15

I don’t cook. If my husband’s away, I’ll eat some crisps or maybe a rice cake. Even putting something in the microwave would be too much effort.

Dorrieisalittlewitch · 26/10/2025 18:17

Sometimes I make myself a little picnic if its just me. A bit of baguette with salami, brie, pesto or tomatoes, mayo and basil. Hardboiled egg. Olives. Taramasalata with breadsticks. Slice of quiche if we have. Stuffed vine leaves.

I wish I got to eat on my own more. I put it on a plate and eat on the sofa or at the kitchen table though.

Laiste · 26/10/2025 18:17

Ooooh yes - crackers and cheese. Or crisp sandwich 😊

TheChosenTwo · 26/10/2025 18:19

I don’t cook unless it’s necessary, dh is the default chef in this house. If he’s out I’ll make sure the kids have something proper (one is a teen and the other 2 are adults) or just make sure there’s stuff for them to fend for themselves and I’ll go without. I just hate all things to do with cooking and clearing up mess.
Maybe once a week this happens.

QwestSprout · 26/10/2025 18:19

I can't imagine not eating a meal for dinner, but I have very fixed - I'm autistic - ideas on what foods can be eaten for which meals. Sandwiches and crisps are only for lunchtimes and I don't eat things like salad anyway.

ishimbob · 26/10/2025 18:19

I always sit at the table to eat - I just find it more pleasant than standing at a counter or sitting on a sofa - but I don't do a standard meal. Usually something like an omelette or something on toast or a tin of soup

Katykaty11 · 26/10/2025 18:20

Cooking is my husband's hobby. If he's out my choice is poached egg on toast (or a crisp sandwich).

thisishowloween · 26/10/2025 18:20

I do "girl dinner" every night Grin

AliceTheCamelHasTheHumpSoGoAliceGoBomBomBom · 26/10/2025 18:21

If I'm not eating with dp or the kids I always have a fishfinger sandwich in front of the TV for dinner. Food of the gods imo.

SixSeven · 26/10/2025 18:21

I would never cook just for me and am also partial to a ploughmans from fridge to mouth.

Laiste · 26/10/2025 18:22

My dad passed away 15 years ago and my mother (88 now) has continued cooking a meat and 2 veg dinner for just herself every single day. Every single day. No take aways. No days when she says 'fuck it' and just had a bacon sandwich. It's cereal for brek, soup and sandwich for lunch, and meat, potatoes and a green veg for dinner. For one.

It exhausts me just thinking about it.

waitamo · 26/10/2025 18:26

Oh yes, very often too! I live on my own and often can't be arsed to get out pots, pans, plates, condiments, ingredients and so on just for me. By the time I have it prepared and cooked the hunger for it is often gone! And then there's the clear up from the bombsite, as I am a bit disorganised in the kitchen.

Scrambled eggs with grated cheese through it, spread on soft brown thick bread with mayo is the standard stand up dinner here. Extra mature cheddar and relish on similar bread is another. No harm done nutrition wise, bloods all good, no deficiencies ha ha.

AutumnCosy2025 · 26/10/2025 18:28

'Girl dinner' 🙄

I live on my own. I eat salad most nights in the warmer months. It's a very low key salad. Nothing fancy.

in the cooler months it's mostly veg thrown in the air fryer. All very low key.

Sometimes soup
sometimes peanuts & yogurt

Eaten sitting on the sofa! Very very rarely sit at the table.

living alone has downsides BUT far more upsides

Comedycook · 26/10/2025 18:29

Oh yeah definitely ...My faves are

Hummus and pitta

Fried halloumi and sweet chilli sauce

Slices of fried aubergine

Cheese and crackers

Brioche roll filled with crisps

Doje · 26/10/2025 18:31

Definitely! When DH and the kids were away I had a bowl of Shreddies one night! Heaven.

Love not having to think about cooking a nutritious dinner for everyone.

DryIce · 26/10/2025 18:32

I must eat a lot more than most people here, I am happy to have an easy meal when it's just for me - but it'd still need to be at least eggs on toast or something. I don't think some ham and tomatoes would be enough for me, but I do love the no clean up idea

sammyspoon · 26/10/2025 18:34

Deffo. Cornichons, some rillettes and perhaps a petite baguette.

LillyPJ · 26/10/2025 18:36

I enjoy cooking just for me, but sometimes I can't be bothered so I'll have toast or cheese and crackers or something easy. I always sit down to eat - at the table if I'm with others, in front of the TV if it's just me.

needmorespace2026 · 26/10/2025 18:38

Hm I’d use the excuse to have something DH doesn’t like, eg huge pile of gyoza with soy sauce and wasabi.
also watch TV shows he doesn’t like such as Phil and Kirsty :-0

Bjorkdidit · 26/10/2025 18:38

I eat what I feel like, but do try to include reasonable nutrition (veg, protein, low UPF etc).

But I don't give it any daft names and don't feel any obligation to cook 'big man meals' for DP (no DC to consider).

I rarely eat cold food by choice and prefer to eat a larger meal earlier in the day so eat a lot of eggs, prawns and cooked veg/tomatoes.

But if there was no obligation to eat well, I'd probably have a Mediterranean vegetable pizza at 11 am and gin, olives and crisps at 6 pm.

Why don't you do that when he's around too? Genuine question.

Cerialkiller · 26/10/2025 18:42

Oh yes! I cook most evenings but when I'm alone I'll just eat leftovers straight out of the tiffin (on the sofa usually) container and spoon straight in the dishwasher. If no leftovers, a chunk of cheese and cucumber/apple, no plate, just wondering around the kitchen.

youalright · 26/10/2025 18:42

I do but not like you or your friend girl dinner to me is like pasta with grated cheese on top or supernoodle sandwiches or a frozen pizza.
