Do you do ‘girl dinner’?

I mean just having snacky things instead of dinner if you find yourself not having partner/kids to feed.

I do it whenever possible - if it’s only me (and it doesn’t happen that much) I will have something like a few cornichons, slice of ham, chunk of cheese, few cherry tomatoes and a handful of nuts. All eaten standing up at the fridge/counter. No washing up. No prep time. Love it.

Was talking to a friend recently and she said if she ever has to only feed herself she will still do a proper dinner and sit down at the table to eat it. Can’t think of anything worse myself.

Maybe I’m just fed up of constantly feeding everyone.

Anyway today DH and DC have been out at an all day thing and have eaten on the way home and I’ve just had half a tub of olives, few slices of salami and a stack of Pringles and couldn’t be happier.

I actually cooked myself a roast dinner for one yesterday.
I'm the only meat eater in the house, Teens aren't keen on roast anyway even if veggie option soo thought f* it I'm doing myself a roast dinner. It was actually fine doing it and I really enjoyed eating it, got loads of chicken left for rest of week, will do it again.
Just sorting your own dinner out, whether it's a snack or a whole dinner is very liberating whatever you have, it just means you haven't got to think of anyone other than yourself.

That's just what Pot Noodles were invented for.

Genuine question. Why is any type of dinner gendered?!

Maybe girls can eat all things pinkish, so salmon, ham, pink wafers etc only in small amounts as girls must eat bird like portions…..and boys can have blueish things like blueberries and blue cheese, in huge amounts obviously because they’re boys and have to be all manly. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I also don't actually think meat, veg, potatoes meals are particularly hard to cook anyway? I suppose it depends on how fancy you make them

Yeah it’s not difficult and it’s a balanced meal. Hardly exhausting. Can be quite filling too so you aren’t going to be digging in the fridge an hour later. I’m not a fan of a tiny snack for dinner as I have a big appetite and I’ll be starving soon after.

BCBird · 27/10/2025 08:50

Live alone. Yesterday made myself roast chicken dinner- thought why not ? I usually can't be bothered.

Fair point, but don't you think a typical man's solitary dinner might differ from a typical woman's? The men is my life would probably focus on fast carbs (pizza, doughnuts...) while the women would be more likely to include vegetables or something 'posh' like salmon or grapes. Huge generalisation of course!

I think eating in male patterns is part of why lots of us gain weight.
When I first moved in with a bloke (back in the 80s so even more stereotypical sexist expectations prevalent) I was suddenly having to provide proper and substantial meals at regular times.
I ate the same and put on a lot of weight.
Before this I had always been a grazer.

I agree. I do need to eat something in the evening but a huge cooked meal is definitely not always necessary. I'm quite happy with something small...I like cold cuts on rye bread sometimes with a little shop bought potato salad or a smoked salmon bagel or something else light like that. DH likes a big meal...meat, potatoes. And I would invariably join him. Definitely made me put on weight

You could have just eaten smaller portions of those 'proper' meals.

In fairness to the OP she has just used these words because females generally eat less than males.
No need to ridicule her about it.

The very idea of girl dinner should be ridiculed.

Or just taken for the light-hearted shorthand it was?

thisishowloween · 27/10/2025 09:03

I knew this thread would turn into a bunch of people
arguing about the term “girl dinner”.

MN is delightfully predictable at times 😂

But it’s such a stupid term. Unless you’re catering for kids.

To delight you further, I am not arguing about the term.
I just get fed up with mocking and point scoring.
It’s nasty and immature.

It’s a social media thing, usually just eating whatever snacks you have in with minimal preparation and no cooking/cleaning.

I was laughing at the comment, not at the OP. But now you come to mention it, it is sort of ridiculous to call eating snacks for dinner "girl dinner" when you're a grown ass adult woman.

Comefromaway · 27/10/2025 09:42

I'm a fussy eater so often cook something different for myself. Dh works away from home from Wed-Fri. On those days I always cook something for me, generally something like home made grilled chicken burger & air fryer wedges with salad or fish & jacket potato.

On the days when dh is home, he cooks.

Can nothing be fun and lighthearted anymore?

bumchic · 27/10/2025 10:24

I do know it’s a stupid term hence the inverted commas but it’s become internet shorthand for eating as I described with no thought, prep or clean up I thought it might be easiest to use to have a discussion about it.

I’d literally never heard it in my life before this thread 🤷🏻‍♀️ I looked it up though and apparently it’s a TikTok thing…🤦🏻‍♀️
