Do you do ‘girl dinner’?

I mean just having snacky things instead of dinner if you find yourself not having partner/kids to feed.

I do it whenever possible - if it’s only me (and it doesn’t happen that much) I will have something like a few cornichons, slice of ham, chunk of cheese, few cherry tomatoes and a handful of nuts. All eaten standing up at the fridge/counter. No washing up. No prep time. Love it.

Was talking to a friend recently and she said if she ever has to only feed herself she will still do a proper dinner and sit down at the table to eat it. Can’t think of anything worse myself.

Maybe I’m just fed up of constantly feeding everyone.

Anyway today DH and DC have been out at an all day thing and have eaten on the way home and I’ve just had half a tub of olives, few slices of salami and a stack of Pringles and couldn’t be happier.

Agree girl dinner is a horrible term.

I think it’s a bit different from living alone. When I lived alone I cooked properly of course. Now it’s that I spend so much time planning and preparing nutritionally sound meals for a family of 5 that when I only have myself to feed I just do what I want and hang the salt content and lack of protein/fibre etc.

So why on earth use it?

Ponderingwindow · 26/10/2025 20:13

Nice little spread, but i sit down and enjoy it with my book or some tv.

HeddaGarbled · 26/10/2025 20:14

All eaten standing up at the fridge/counter

Good grief, no!

That’s teenage boy dinner.

Bumbles55 · 26/10/2025 20:20

Not really to be honest! I’m quite in to nutrition and a proper, balanced evening meal is my non negotiable. Anything else would leave me unsatisfied (and feeling a bit rubbish about myself)

I hate cooking in company and only really make tried and tested recipes when I’m cooking for others so if I’m on my own that’s usually the time when I’ll choose to experiment or make something a bit more complicated. Usually a good pasta or risotto dish as they are my favourite.

I like very few ‘dinners’. I live on sandwiches made from scrumptious bread, sometimes an inventive wrap - containing a healthy filling like chicken, peanuts ( I like salt and a crunch in everything) salad, mayo, couple of crisps. Or egg mayo and cress, cheese and pickle, New York Deli style with piccalilli, corned beef and beetroot - cream cheese and dried apricot with crisps and dry roasted peanuts. Today I’ve had a posh burger with salad and cheese and tomato sauce with air fried chips in a wrap. Last week I had a fish and mushy pea with salad wrap and chips. And a couple of glasses of wine. I’ve always been a smacker -maybe have 5 small plates as opposed to 3 large ones- never been overweight in my life and am fit and well.

If I’m having dinner alone it might be a Chinese as a complete treat - think DH is out for the night so I’m having a cheeky wine and Chinese!
otherwise partial to a freezer dinner like fish fingers oven chips peas etc as my DH is big into cooking from scratch - I am too but there’s a time and a place for a freezer dinner IMO

It's very rarely ever just me for dinner, but I'd still cook something. It'd probably just be pasta though, with tomato puree, herbs and cherry tomatoes or frozen veg or something. I'd probably add anything else that needed using up and enjoy not having any complaints!

SpottyAardvark · 26/10/2025 20:28

‘Girl dinner’ is a daft phrase. But no, I don’t cook for myself when DP isn’t around. That’s what M&S pizzas are for. He does almost all the cooking anyway so I do a good line in learned culinary incompetence.

whiteroseredrose · 26/10/2025 20:31

Beans on toast for me when DH is out.

Mewling · 26/10/2025 20:33

I would live on pesto pasta for the rest of my life if I had my way. Alas, DC requires nutrition. 🙄

peepsypops · 26/10/2025 20:58

Ps. I don’t really like the concept of this - if I lived alone for example, I would routinely be cheffing all sorts - just because you’re cooking for one doesn’t mean it’s any less of an event or an occasion? Why not treat yourself if that’s what you like? I love cooking

Boogiemam · 26/10/2025 21:04

For me it's usually steak. DH doesn't really like steak so it's a treat. If he's not in the house I don't even cut it up I'll just take that thing down like a bear 😂

I’d eat too much if I did that and also what pleasure is it in eating standing up? The only concession to not having anyone else to cook for is I’ll occasionally have a microwave ready meal. But I always sit down (usually in front of the TV).

Each to their own, as long as its filling.
Why cant you sit down though. I wouldn't stand, what's the problem with sotting and being comfortable to eat.
