Do you do ‘girl dinner’?

I mean just having snacky things instead of dinner if you find yourself not having partner/kids to feed.

I do it whenever possible - if it’s only me (and it doesn’t happen that much) I will have something like a few cornichons, slice of ham, chunk of cheese, few cherry tomatoes and a handful of nuts. All eaten standing up at the fridge/counter. No washing up. No prep time. Love it.

Was talking to a friend recently and she said if she ever has to only feed herself she will still do a proper dinner and sit down at the table to eat it. Can’t think of anything worse myself.

Maybe I’m just fed up of constantly feeding everyone.

Anyway today DH and DC have been out at an all day thing and have eaten on the way home and I’ve just had half a tub of olives, few slices of salami and a stack of Pringles and couldn’t be happier.

I always eat alone but the idea of nibbling on 3 calories whilst standing in the kitchen doesn't appeal.
Although I'm probably guilty of the girl dinner concept. This evening I had a home made chickpea dip with a huge plate of crudites.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/10/2025 21:42

“Girl dinner” 🙄

WTAF does that MEAN in relation to food?

Palilula · 26/10/2025 21:45

"Girl dinner" is sexist and misogynist, please stop acting like it's a normal thing to say. Do you think lone men are routinely cooking a three-course meal for themselves? Do you think that some random woman is only eating what she wants because she is exempt for the moment from cooking for a man?

But yes, I sometimes eat like this (not over the sink, obv) including when I'm prepping dinner for other people or when someone else is prepping dinner for others including me. IME it has more to do with timing and the weather than anything else - in my family we often have a cold soup, little bit of salad, crackers or pita with hummus, etc. as a meal in the summer.

Endofyear · 26/10/2025 21:53

I don't know if it's girl dinner but if I'm on my own I usually have cheese on toast with hot sauce to dip it in and a bag of crisps! Although my other guilty pleasure is a can of m&s hot beef curry with cheap white bread and butter to dunk in the sauce - heaven!

Echobelly · 26/10/2025 21:58

Been known to do it, sometime in summer for Shabbat when we have a challah loaf and I'm just, sod it, lets get dips and smoked salmon. So I guess that's Jewish Girl Dinner 😄

AlwaysADramaHadEnough · 26/10/2025 22:01

I have cereal or toast when it's just me. My favourite is a huge bowl of cornflakes ice cold milk . Boring but I love it
I also do this if I don't particularly fancy what I've prepared for the others too.

Titsywoo · 26/10/2025 22:07

Not really. DH travels a fair amount with work, DD is at uni and DS often at his partners house. So I eat on my own regularly. I still cook as normal for myself. I'm not a fan of the picky bits concept apart from maybe at Xmas when I can't be bothered and am full from lots of big meals.

I'm not keen on the term either but how is it misogynist? Of course everyone is different, but I think the typical man's solitary dinner may well differ from that of a typical woman.

cupfinalchaos · 26/10/2025 22:15

Me tooo.. fed up of feeling everyone their favourite dinners. If it’s just me I’ll have marmite and cheese on rice cakes.

ninjahamster · 26/10/2025 22:17

Either the same as you or sometimes when I am on my own I do pasta, mix in grated cheese when hot, touch of onion salt, pepper, bit of mayo.

So satisfying!

Palilula · 26/10/2025 22:20

FFS, STOP with crazy sexist "girl dinner" shite!!!!

Standing at the fridge eating what you want is not a ‘girl’ thing — it’s a human thing. You’re an adult, your hunger matters, and calling it cute or diminutive just buys into centuries of women being told we come second. Own it, unapologetically.

pinkpony88 · 26/10/2025 22:22

The only food DH doesn’t like is salmon so on the rare occasions he’s away I eat it every night in various guises 🤣

BingBongBish · 26/10/2025 18:43

Blimey.

I never thought I'd say this, but after reading 'Girl dinner', the words 'picky tea' aren't quite as irritating.

I came on here to say this! Are we implying that girls are incapable of cooking meals? 😂

It’s a lazy dinner. And there’s nothing wrong with it, sounds lovely. But my DP would do this for himself if me and the kids weren’t around. Can’t see him calling it a girl dinner.

Allswellthatendswelll · 26/10/2025 22:23

I like a fish finger sandwich (DC eat a lot of fish fingers) or if I've got them in those itsu dumpling things. Or crisps, hummus and a bit of fruit.

StokePotteries · 26/10/2025 22:25

DickDewey · 26/10/2025 18:15

I don’t cook. If my husband’s away, I’ll eat some crisps or maybe a rice cake. Even putting something in the microwave would be too much effort.

A single rice cake instead of dinner?

awkwardasfuck · 26/10/2025 22:27

I get yo sushi or similar on the way home or have a cheese and tomato toastie does that count as girl dinner

drspouse · 26/10/2025 22:33

I cannot think when I last had a dinner in the house with just me. However I do go away for work quite a bit and a meal deal eaten in the hotel for an evening meal can't be a sandwich, has to be a salad or sushi plus a large bag of whatever sweets are good locally, Dutch licorice is especially good

This 100%!

PurplePantsofPower · 26/10/2025 22:35

Urgh hate the phrase, but no I don't do picky things, I actually enjoy cooking when it's just for me and I can cook exactly what I want without worrying about other people's preferences, it's my most relaxed cooking experience!

TubeScreamer · 26/10/2025 22:36

I love cooking a proper meal just for me. I can have exactly what I want rather than lowest common denominator food that is ok for everyone but loved by nobody.

needmorespace2026 · 26/10/2025 22:36

Bjorkdidit · 26/10/2025 18:40

Why don't you do that when he's around too? Genuine question.

Late reply here but when we are both there we eat and watch things we both like. When I am out I believe DH eats cereal or kebab and watches reruns of Deep Space Nine. I do not wish to join him in this. When he is out I watch property shows and eat horseradish. He does not wish to join me in this. When we are both in we behave like normal people who share a kitchen and a telly, eat pasta and watch box sets on Netflix.

me24x · 26/10/2025 22:42

Wow you sound exactly like me! Currently eating salami, cheese, crisps and olives at the kitchen counter .. that’s after I made a full blown roast for DH (children too young to eat roast), parents, siblings and partners a lot earlier in the day. If I didn’t have anyone to feed (one can hope) there is no WAY I would be even turning on the stove

Mamadothehump · 26/10/2025 22:43

AliceTheCamelHasTheHumpSoGoAliceGoBomBomBom · 26/10/2025 18:21

If I'm not eating with dp or the kids I always have a fishfinger sandwich in front of the TV for dinner. Food of the gods imo.

Will you be my friend?

soupforbrains · 26/10/2025 22:46

I do this but I don’t think it’s exclusively female. I was raised in a house where if nobody was in the mood then we didn’t have dinner and instead we had supper which is basically a no cooking required meal as you’ve described. I think supper is traditionally eaten later than dinner(meaning evening meal). Girl dinner sounds like a dinner out with female friends to me. But even then it would be a girls’ dinner.

tragichero · 26/10/2025 22:47

I live alone when DD is at her dad's, and quite often have a toasted sandwich, crumpets, cheese and biscuits, something like that for dinner.

Of I might have a ready meal, or pasta and pesto, or something out of a tin....

Sometimes I cook properly too, just depends on my mood.

I would never stand up to eat it though I don't think!

I don't see it as "girl dinner" because I imagine many blokes do the same!
