What do you do when you get home from a night away? I mean as you walk in the door

I always feel at a bit of a loose end when I come back from a night or more away. The house doesn't quite feel mine and it takes me a while to settle down.

I hoovered the car, unpacked a bit. Other people are putting a wash on. I normally end up going for a bath to help settle in. Then I feel more relaxed and can watch tv or read or something

What do you do? Does it feel unfamiliar to you?

Pick up the post and have a wee.

Empress13 · 19/10/2025 07:37

Car emptied cases unpacked wash on then cuppa after snuggling my dog

VictorianScreenTime · 19/10/2025 07:41

I also breathe deeply- but more so because I’m always paranoid house smells bad and I want to have an honest smell (revert to being nose blind after that).

Then lug suitcase into utility and throw a wash on. Then tea and think about dinner. If I’m very organised I’ll have gone to the shops on the way home.

cinquanta · 19/10/2025 07:49

I normally go straight to the loo.

BilingualDoggo · 19/10/2025 07:53

Spend time with our animals. Drink tea and probably have something to eat.

Completely correct. The “I’m home” cup of tea is a sacrosanct ritual.
Also, thanks to DH, I am now trained to unpack the same day. Suitcases back in store room. Laundry on.

Me too. I used to happily leave suitcases unpacked for a long time….sometimes till I needed them again. I was intrigued with DH that the first thing he did when he got home was unpack and put a wash on….even before the kettle went on. He’s relaxed a bit these days and will at least have a cuppa first.

MagicLoop · 19/10/2025 08:44

It doesn't feel at all unfamiliar to me unless I've been away for more than a week, which I very rarely am.

Cup of tea first (unless it's after 5pm ish). Pick up cat from cattery if we've been away more than a couple of days and it's within cattery opening hours so I don't need to wait until the following day. Start unpacking.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2025 08:49

Put the kettle. Everything else can wait till I’ve had a cup of tea.

StarlightLady · 19/10/2025 09:13

Lots of cups of tea in this thread. Where have all the coffee drinkers gone?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2025 09:19

Im rather pleased to see the tea drinkers out in force. I often feel like tea is being forgotten!

whatcanthematterbe81 · 19/10/2025 13:59

Don’t even unpack. Crack open the wine and stick to telly on. And make it up to my cats

ChewbaccasMrs · 30/01/2026 07:24

I put the heating on.
Use the loo, take my bra off whilst I'm in there.
Put the kettle on.
Give the Dogs a load of fuss.
Make a cuppa, stick some laundry on,put the toiletries away
Sit down, feet up telly on and order a take away.

golemmings · 30/01/2026 07:38

Kettle on, wash on, pick up the post, wait for a cat update report from the kids.

BadActingParsley · 30/01/2026 07:41

Cup of tea.

reluctantbrit · 30/01/2026 07:46

We normally come home quite late, so 8pm and later. That means dumping everything in the hallway, putting electronics on charger and maybe making a cup of tea or a cold drink before falling into bed.

I often read a bit and DH prefers some TV so he stays downstairs.

If it's more like 5-6pm then we do food, unpack and tidy up a bit more.

For a day trip - cup of tea, food, read/TV or chat.

Biscuits4 · 30/01/2026 07:58

Agree, it always feels odd. If my cats are home, I go looking for them. If not, put water and food out and go and get them from cattery. Everything else waits until I've seen them. After that, unpack and if it's not late, go out and top up on fresh food.

Heyhelga · 30/01/2026 07:58

Honestly, I just kick off my shoes and chill on the sofa for a while. Bags left unpacked at the bottom of the stairs for least an hour or two.

TheKateColumbo · 30/01/2026 08:40

Shoes off, wash hands, make a pot of tea.
The same if I’ve been out for half an hour or away for a week.

SewingBees · 30/01/2026 09:09

Thank fuck (once again) that I no longer live with my ex husband so my home is still neat tidy clean and welcoming.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 30/01/2026 09:13

Check the goldfish and put the kettle on.
