What do you do when you get home from a night away? I mean as you walk in the door

I always feel at a bit of a loose end when I come back from a night or more away. The house doesn't quite feel mine and it takes me a while to settle down.

I hoovered the car, unpacked a bit. Other people are putting a wash on. I normally end up going for a bath to help settle in. Then I feel more relaxed and can watch tv or read or something

What do you do? Does it feel unfamiliar to you?

I get shouted at by several cats telling me it's dinner time.

Whatever time of day it is. Because Daddy (DH) won't have fed them of course he has, they just chance their arm 😂

frozendaisy · 18/10/2025 18:57

Usually think
“wish we’d tided up a bit more before we left”

notatinydancer · 18/10/2025 18:57

Put case in spare room. Get essentials out of hand luggage.
Shower , bed. If day time, nip to Sainsburys.

SliceofTosst · 18/10/2025 19:00

Open my windows and put on my pj's. Shut the windows and have a cup of tea.

menopausalfart · 18/10/2025 19:00

Make a decent mug of tea.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/10/2025 19:04

I used to, inadvertently, knock the milk bottles over that were on the door step and giggle, but thankfully now with recyclable, plastic ones that is a thing of the past.
So, to be honest, I'm a bit of a loss now...

snemrose · 18/10/2025 19:05

Love how a cup of tea is top priority for so many people. The strange thing is I don’t drink tea at any other time - only if I have been in the car/travelling more than a couple of hours. No idea why 🤷🏽‍♀️

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 18/10/2025 19:09

Pick up post
Greet the cats
Hang up coat
Put my slippers on
Take bags upstairs and unpacked
Put on a wash if necessary
Pour wine

Blingismything · 18/10/2025 19:09

Wash hands, put kettle on, have a cup of tea, unpack, put washing machine on. Have a shower.

mustytrusty · 18/10/2025 19:30

Kettle on

GreenSmithing · 18/10/2025 19:49

Drop bag
Say, "oh thank God, I'm home"
Wash hands
Kettle on
Put a wash on
Sit on the sofa with a coffee
Sigh a bit.
If it's late have a shower and go to bed otherwise nip to the shops for food.

What I should do is fully unpack, but I travel a fair amount for work, so my suitcase and washbag often stay by the front door if I'm going to need them again shortly.

MyIvyGrows · 18/10/2025 19:52

Breathe deeply in the hallway - the house always smells nicer after being away for a while, despite the shoes and umbrellas being stored next to the door!

then tea.

Umy15r03lcha1 · 18/10/2025 19:58

Put a wash on

BoarBrush · 18/10/2025 20:13

Heating on, then upstairs for my pj's. Then get a coffee and sit on my arse.

Taytocrisps · 18/10/2025 21:29

Put on the kettle and make a cuppa. I'm usually tired after the journey.

Maybeishouldcrochet · 18/10/2025 21:34

1st thing is put a wash on
We pack from holiday with 3 bags (hubby, DC and me)

  1. Has all dirty clothes- and is chucked in the wash as well go through the door
  2. Has all the clean things in it
  3. Often has things we have bought when away

Aka I am weird- and can't relax until car is unpacked and everything is away....
Then we have a drink, sit down or put tea on....

iamnotalemon · 18/10/2025 21:36

Take my bra off

CointreauVersial · 18/10/2025 21:37

Check house not wrecked by resident kidult(s), open post, water dying plants, tidy inevitably messy kitchen, inspect garden, cup of tea (which usually goes cold as I scurry around finding jobs to do), cases upstairs, unpack, laundry into basket....collapse onto sofa or bed.

CointreauVersial · 18/10/2025 21:38

DH, on the other hand, moves straight to the last step. 🙄

Octavia64 · 18/10/2025 21:38

Kettle on.

cup of tea.

feed the cats.

TroysMammy · 18/10/2025 21:39

Greet the cat.
Greet my partner who has a cup of tea ready for me.

CurlewKate · 18/10/2025 21:43

Cup of tea.

AuntyBulgaria · 18/10/2025 21:44

All these very good people that come in and straight away unpack and put a wash on - very impressed! I don't think that happens until the next day at the very earliest!
Always shoes off, comfy clothes and a cup of tea.

SwirlyWhirls · 18/10/2025 21:44

Check the cats are OK, semi unpack but get bored/tired and decide the rest can wait until tomorrow, maybe have a cup of tea, then we usually end up going to the pub or for a curry to commiserate the holiday ending 😂

isitmyturn · 18/10/2025 21:44

Hoovered the car??
My car gets hoovered once a year or so.
First thing, heating on washer on.
