What do you do when you get home from a night away? I mean as you walk in the door

I always feel at a bit of a loose end when I come back from a night or more away. The house doesn't quite feel mine and it takes me a while to settle down.

I hoovered the car, unpacked a bit. Other people are putting a wash on. I normally end up going for a bath to help settle in. Then I feel more relaxed and can watch tv or read or something

What do you do? Does it feel unfamiliar to you?

Agreed a bath is a good transition

or get PJs on and chill out on the sofa for a bit

mumofoneAloneandwell · 18/10/2025 18:07

Shower, bed with a takeaway x

Hayley1256 · 18/10/2025 18:07

Unpack, put a wash on, shower, pj's then relax

ZenNudist · 18/10/2025 18:07

Unpack
Cuppa

TheIncredibleGato · 18/10/2025 18:09

Put the kettle on. Doesn't matter if I've been out of the house for two weeks or two hours 😂 Nor does it matter what time of day or night it is. Having a cup of tea means you're home.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/10/2025 18:09

As soon as I walk in? Find the cat. Everything else can wait.

Although a takeaway x sounds intriguing, is that when they don’t tell you what you’re getting?

KissMyArt · 18/10/2025 18:11

One or two nights doesn't feel unfamiliar at all.

I'd have to spend at least a week away to feel like that.

And what I do when I get home, would depend on the time of day or night I suppose.

But it always involves being molested by my dogs and while I apologise profusely for not being there 😁

No, it's when posters put a kiss at the end of their comment.

Coming home poo.

Not literally as I walk in the door, but it's usually high up in the list of priorities.

Possibly too much information, but you did ask.

Completely correct. The “I’m home” cup of tea is a sacrosanct ritual.
Also, thanks to DH, I am now trained to unpack the same day. Suitcases back in store room. Laundry on.

snemrose · 18/10/2025 18:18

I have to open windows as soon as I get in. Then a cuppa.
Car is fully emptied as are bags/suitcases. Load of washing put on then I have to have a shower and then relax whilst telling the dc where to put everything 🙈🤣

Owly11 · 18/10/2025 18:19

Cuppa, chat.

MarxistMags · 18/10/2025 18:20

Put the heating and kettle on !

AmethystAnnotation · 18/10/2025 18:21

Unpack, get dirty clothes en route to wash, have a bath.

HansHolbein · 18/10/2025 18:22

We go away a couple of weekends a month. First thing I do is make a cup of tea. Do a bit of scrolling. Then I start the washing machine…always have a bath at the end!

Thursa · 18/10/2025 18:22

Go to the bathroom
put on comfy clothes
unpack
start the washing
put case away
cup of tea or glass of wine depending on the time of day

unlikelychump · 18/10/2025 18:22

As I got in the bath I realised I was desperate for a tea and havent made one. That was why I started the thread tbh, wondering if I had got my priorities wrong.

Noone wants to chat here sadly. Kids watching tv and dh is always out of sorts after full day with us.

I don't feel unsettled at all after any length away, I just enjoy being back at base. The first thing I do is pull the blind up fully in the kitchen and look out to see how the garden did in my absence!

Vitriolinsanity · 18/10/2025 18:38

Cup of tea. Stat.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/10/2025 18:40

Make tea and cuddle my cats. Then I have a shower, put my pyjamas on and have dippy eggs and toast.

ConnieHeart · 18/10/2025 18:43

Depends what time of day it is. Assuming it's mid afternoon, find the cats, give them attention & food, open the post, put the kettle on & start unpacking

YourWinter · 18/10/2025 18:46

Open the door to the garden, apologise to the cats for having gone AWOL, put the kettle on.

pizzaHeart · 18/10/2025 18:53

straight away? Taking shoes off, washing hands, could be a quick shower in some cases but it’s really quick, changing into my comfy clothes, opening windows or heating on and then cup of tea.
Then unpacking.

Never bath before tea ☕️

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 18/10/2025 18:53

Washing on
Open windows
But the very best bit
Being back in our own bed Aaah pure bliss.

LillyPJ · 18/10/2025 18:55

I take my shoes off, put the kettle on and take my case or bag upstairs. Then I sit down with a cup of tea.
