Would you be annoyed if school went 100% halal meat?

The school I work at has a new head teacher who has announced from after half term all meat needs to be halal. She says it's a more ethical way to slaughter animals (she's vegan herself) and no non-halal meat will be on offer. She said anyone who doesn't want it can bring a packed lunch.

I don't know much about halal meat other than it's religious connections. What do you think?

MrsZiggywinkle · 16/10/2025 17:21

Yes

I choose not to eat Halal meat at home so I don’t see why it should be thrust on my children at school.

I imagine I will be called racist for saying it but I frankly don’t care what the lentil weavers think.

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:15

@Elefinstrunf you do realise that Christians and Muslims (and Jews) all worship the same God 😂😂

Oh wow, so all religions are exactly the same and all stand for the same things? Did you just create world peace?
Would you say that to a muslim?

Marble10 · 16/10/2025 17:23

It will be due to your schools population of Muslim pupils who cannot eat non halal. It’s easier to change it all to halal for this purpose as people who don’t have a halal diet can eat both. I don’t agree with it in a Christian country, but unfortunately lots of places are doing it, a lot of the time without the customer even knowing, this isn’t just limited to kebab shops but high street chains too.

Fancy forcing that down others throats literally.nope people should have a choice.

Wintershealing · 16/10/2025 17:24

I don't personally eat the food but I will be part of getting any backlash for it. The only other option is vegan and nothing else. So a halal meal or a vegan meal.

I really wouldn't give a toss.

Meat is meat.

softlyfallsthesnow · 16/10/2025 17:25

Didntask · 16/10/2025 17:04

80% of halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter now, so it's not really much different to non halal.

Your evidence? What about the other 20%?
And then there's the illegal halal slaughterhouses flourishing in parts of the country. The bullock that ran through the streets of central Birmingham a few months ago hadn't caught the train. No one had any idea how it got there. Allegedly.

No I wouldn't be happy OP.

Wintershealing · 16/10/2025 17:25

@Marble10there is only 1 pupil who eats halal at the moment.

Er...no.
But that's a basic fact about Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
It's the same God.
Fact.
(if you believe in God obviously)
(Yes I would say that to a Muslim - although unlikely I'd need too. Every Muslim I have ever met knows that 😂)

I don’t think your Sunday roast will taste any different whether it was prayed over by an Imam, Priest or White witch TBH!
My school is a Church of England school with 90% Muslim population - they have just celebrated Harvest in church, will celebrate Christmas and Easter in the same church. It is always packed to the rafters by their parents! Perhaps they are not quite as narrow minded as some so-called Christians seem to be.
Even Jesus shared food with anyone whom he happened to be seated with (he was Jewish BTW so his meat would have been killed in the same was as Halal meat is, with the slaughterer reciting Jewish prayers.

MushMonster · 16/10/2025 17:27

I will be very annoyed. This means no gammon, pork chops or pork sausages in the menu. No bacon, no ham.
Why?
Regarding how humane it is, lots of people claim that halal is less ethic due to lesser numbing of the animal. But I have no clue, so I do not get worked up about that.
But about taking entirely normal meats that we all eat daily from the menu entirely, to that I am opposed. Why?

WhywasIborntoolate · 16/10/2025 17:28

I thought it was one of the crueler ways to slaughter an animal

Can I point out that all meat that schools purchase isn’t exactly of the highest welfare standard - it’s not free range or organic because that would be too expensive. It’s cheap and cheerful with pork from pigs housed in huge indoor pens, chicken from caged hens and beef from cows fed poor food that barely get to see a blade of grass.

CopperWhite · 16/10/2025 17:29

I would barely notice.

Except it’s the same god worshipped in a slightly different way. As is the Jewish god.

Bless you if you think school dinners comprise pork chops, bacon or gammon. It’s too expensive!

A lot of fast food outlets that are halal use turkey bacon/ham for products like pizza or cheeseburgers with bacon etc.
Obviously customers need to be made aware of that but most people I know are happy to eat that alternative if that's what is on offer.

Edited

God is God, there is one God and all religions believe their own God is Him

I don't know why you think you are making a valid point by putting laughing faces.

I think she thinks her God is more godly than the other gods. Must be very crowded up there with all those gods .

Again. Would you expect muslims to eat a meal blessed by a catholic priest, with a catholic prayer?

It's shocking that someone who says they are a Christian doesn't know this basic fact about their faith.

Maybe some schools but not all so that's a bit of a sweeping statement. I have a lot of knowledge around school meals so that's how I know.

This particular school uses free range meats/eggs etc and quality ingredients.

This.

I am atheist and a vegetarian, but no I don’t want my children to eat halal meat in schools. This country is culturally Christian so I don’t understand why we would cater so publicly for any religion. I prefer to live in a sectarian society and this is a step backwards for me.

WhywasIborntoolate · 16/10/2025 17:36

It’s not your question but I eat high welfare organic meat, and I make it a priority.
People who claim they can’t afford it are spending on clothes, holidays, unnecessary iPhones and consoles just because it is the latest, and I don’t know what else! I get second hand clothes and don’t go on holidays.
