Would you be annoyed if school went 100% halal meat?

The school I work at has a new head teacher who has announced from after half term all meat needs to be halal. She says it's a more ethical way to slaughter animals (she's vegan herself) and no non-halal meat will be on offer. She said anyone who doesn't want it can bring a packed lunch.

I don't know much about halal meat other than it's religious connections. What do you think?

I’m veggie so I feel like if people are going to eat meat, why are they so picky about the word halal? I’ve just done a quick google and all UK meat is required to be stunned before slaughter and it is then slaughtered via severing a major artery. I’m not sure how different that is to halal being stunned and its throat cut? The only issue is there is some dispensation to religious specifics relating to kosher & halal meat, but 80-90% of UK halal meat is stunned anyway. Unless the meat is some trash from abroad I don’t see the huge issue?

Is this a contradiction though?

If all UK meat is required to be stunned, how is it only 80% of Halal/Kosher meat is stunned?

Ah, here we go, the Christian bashing starts, whilst defending Muslims rights to practice their religion.

I'm not defending any religion. Every single one is a fairy story. When I was at school, school dinners were vile but we weren't allowed to bring packed lunches. I would be singing and dancing if I'd been allowed to have a packed lunch from home.

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:36

Elefinstrunf · 16/10/2025 17:32

Again. Would you expect muslims to eat a meal blessed by a catholic priest, with a catholic prayer?

Yes.
Many do.
I know in my mums hometown there are frequently cross-faith get togethers for the leaders of local places of worship.
Many people who are the local Iman/Rabbi/Priest/Whatever get together for breakfast or lunch events.

Oh wow, so all religions are exactly the same and all stand for the same things? Did you just create world peace?
Would you say that to a muslim?

She wouldnt need to say it to a Muslim. All the Abrahamic religions worship the same deity. Everyone knows this.

ShesTheAlbatross · 16/10/2025 17:38

Wouldn’t bother me. I don’t suffer from the delusion that non-halal meat has been cuddled to death. I find it very odd that people willing to eat meat that has often lived and died in horrible conditions suddenly decide they care deeply about animal welfare when it comes to halal

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:39

@Elefinstrunf please approach your priest/pastor/vicar/whatever it's called in your church and ask for a lesson on the Abrahamic faiths.
Please.
Your lack of knowledge about this is embarrassing for you and it's ignorance that causes so much hatred.

sciaticafanatica · 16/10/2025 17:40

Honestly the meat they use in schools is of the lowest quality and price, so how it’s slaughtered would be the least of my concern.

SerendipityJane · 16/10/2025 17:40

CrossChecking · 16/10/2025 17:21

Meat is meat. I don't care what religion the cow my children eat was.

However, ideally you'd like the animal to not have built up a shed load of stress hormones immediately prior to slaughter.

MushMonster · 16/10/2025 17:40

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:31

A lot of fast food outlets that are halal use turkey bacon/ham for products like pizza or cheeseburgers with bacon etc.
Obviously customers need to be made aware of that but most people I know are happy to eat that alternative if that's what is on offer.

Pork chops and sausages are cheap and part of school dinners around here. So is bacon and ham. And so is gammon in Christmas.
Actually pork is a rather cheap and versatile meat. Most children will eat it, particularly the sausages and ham. And bacon for the Christmas pigs in blankets, maccaroni cheese, some pasta dishes, and so on.
I would not be hapy with that at all.

Any animal going to the slaughterhouse is going to be stressed whether it's stunned before its' throat is slit or not.

Didntask · 16/10/2025 17:04

80% of halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter now, so it's not really much different to non halal.

Is this true?

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:44

@MushMonster I was just pointing out that a variation on something like a Hawaiian pizza or a Bacon Double Cheeseburger or Carbonara etc can be made without using pig meat.
Schools don't get much money for the meals so it's better not to have too much different variety.

MirandaBlu · 16/10/2025 17:44

Without her comment, I would have guessed that the driver was wanting to provide halal meat for children who can't eat non-halal, without drawing attention to this or having to provide meat from multiple sources. But from an inclusivity perspective, it would make more sense to switch to kosher meat only, as it meets (no pun intended) the requirements for halal, but halal meat does not meet the requirements for kashrut.

If neither of these systems applies to your child, I wouldn't worry about it unless there's something you're aware of about halal slaughter in your location that convinces you that it's LESS humane than other methods. The fact that a religious person said a prayer over the meat isn't going to harm a child a different faith, or none.

I think you need educating a bit on religion.

Christians, Jews, and Muslims all worship the same Abrahamic God. The reason why there are 3 separate religions is that there are differences in belief in how that God should be worshipped. E.g. Muslims don't believe that Jesus was the son of God but that he was a prophet and the Messiah, Jews don't believe Jesus was the Messiah at all and definitely not the son of God, and Christians believe that Jesus was both the son of God and the Messiah and is therefore divine (1 aspect of the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). Jews and Muslims don't believe in the Trinity (God split into 3 parts).

Sorry to burst your bubble but all of these religions originate in the same part of the world roughly in the Middle East. Christians, Jews and Muslims all believe they are practicing the true Abrahamic faith and all believe they are the direct descendants of Abraham, and that the other two faiths have got it wrong.

This is very poor rage bait.

GagMeWithASpoon · 16/10/2025 17:47

Your premise makes no sense. No vegan is going to make claims halal meat is more ethical or make changes based on that.

Ignoring that absolute nonsense, no I wouldn’t care. Meat is meat and dead is dead.

School meals are cheap crappy stuff anyways , designed to meet a minimum standard of nutrition for a minimum price.

Wintershealing · 16/10/2025 17:48

I think the point is why does religion of any kind need to be involved in meat.

The school is question has 1 halal meat eater so there's hardly a huge demand.

Yeah of course it can be called a contradiction, it’s just what I saw from a quick google. I guess they can’t enforce 10-20% as I bet that’s accounting for none abattoir slaughters?

Needmorelego · 16/10/2025 17:50

@Elefinstrunf well I think (not 100% without checking) that apart from Saudi Arabia most "Muslim" countries allow people to practice Christianity.

The cool thing about going to Nandos to eat chicken that's had a muslim prayer recited over it is that it does make a blind bit of difference.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 16/10/2025 17:51

Yes. I am an atheist and don't want whatever anything religious in schools, exept for RE.

Unless I chose to send my DC to a faith school... then I would have to abide by their rules.

KnickerlessParsons · 16/10/2025 17:51

Wintershealing · 16/10/2025 17:07

Is it true a prayer is said to the animals under Islamic rules?

Even if it is true I doubt the animals understand it, and neither does it make impending death any more enjoyable.
