So thousands of deaths a year are responsible use ?

I think there's very little doubt that if alcohol were discovered now, it would be a class A drug. But the cat is out of the bag and you can't put it back in. As said, it's very very easy to make. And if people start home distilling, you end up with a lot of deaths due to methanol poisoning, so you're not saving lives. There isn't an easy answer.

The millions who don’t die are the responsible use.

We've already debunked the methanol myth on another thread 😀

If there is no methanol in your wash (and it's difficult to ferment) then there won't be any in your distillate. Pectin is your problem ....

Alcohol is everywhere. Hand wash, preservatives in paint, glue, tire manufacturer - the possibilities are endless. Best to go with white vinegar.

How are you?

Jenrick is making quite a fool out of himself after tweeting that football hooliganism in the 80's was 'largely good natured fun"

(he was born in '81)

No surprise there (eta re: the journalist or Jenrick! Although I meant to quote Duncin's post about deporting Sultana).

I don't agree with Sultana though. Either let the fans from both teams in and police it properly or play the match behind closed doors. Banning one set of fans was always going to look very bad.

Evenstar · 18/10/2025 09:33

@DuncinToffee 😮 at both of those

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2025 09:39

It is not that unusual to ban away fans but I'd say ban those Ultra hoolligans and allow the normal fans.

Tommeh has jumped on the bandwagon, he has been banned by his club so has experience.

He did what?

I’m 10 years old than him and (I suspect) attended more games than he did. My Dad stopped taking us for a while in the early 80s for good reasons.

It was not good natured fun.

Notonthestairs · 18/10/2025 09:46

I’ve never known anyone get nostalgic for 80s style hooliganism.

What a surprise.

I don't know much about football, so are you saying Duncin that it would be possible to ban the hooligan element of the Maccabi fans without having a blanket ban on all of them?

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2025 09:55

Part of Jenrick's tweet

Funny thing is that he says he is a Wovles fan

@PandoraSocks I would have thought it might be possible, but obviously time consuming and take up considerable police resources. I know certain fans have had travel bans etc and our police have worked with foreign police forces to share intelligence to prevent trouble at foreign tournaments and matches.

Hhhhmmm he’s giving 80s football the Downton Abbey treatment. We all lived harmoniously. Fairly foggy lens there.

PickAChew · 18/10/2025 09:58

The wonderful 80's where casual racism, disablism and sexual assault were just a bit of a larf 🙄

It's not unusual for Newcastle - Sunderland derby matches to be home team only. Another tactic used to help with crowd control is to only sell away tickets on combination with a coach seat and only allow away fans in if they came off the coach.

Edited

They should have gone for a closed door approach, but after what the Maccabi Tel Aviv fans did in Amsterdam, I absolutely wouldn't want them here. They're the Millwall of Israel.

Evenstar · 18/10/2025 10:02

I doubt he has any real idea of football in the 80’s as he was only a baby or small child for most of the decade. I lived near a city in the late 80’s where football violence was rife and most people avoided going anywhere near the football ground on home match days. There was also a group that caught trains en masse to cause trouble at away matches. They were violent binge drinking racist thugs and Jenrick shouldn’t be minimising what went on.

Yes, I was reading about what they did. Some of the stuff they were chanting was absolutely vile.

PandoraSocks · 18/10/2025 10:05

As a teen in the late 70s, my DH was beaten up by adult fans of the opposing team.Happy days, eh?

Evenstar · 18/10/2025 10:06

Saw this quote from a Dutch fan who witnessed their behaviour in Amsterdam, there is no reason the people of Birmingham should have to put up with this. I think it is extremely disingenuous to claim it is anti Semitic to not want gangs of thugs on the street

Of course the SA were pretty much football hooligans without the sport. Which is why an avid Nazi fan like Jenrick has warm feelings about them.

It's just a retread of Hug a Hoodie.

I think I get the medal. Grew up in Glasgow. Old Firm matchdays were horrendous.

DuncinToffee · 18/10/2025 10:31

My nephew and BIL were at that Ajax match, they went by car rather than train as usual, had to be escorted to the car park and they couldn't wait to get out. Very scary experience.

My sister watching at home and getting updates was a nervous wreck.

Jenrick clearly also doesn't know about Heysel.
