I can't say im sad about it

I think it's disgusting that in a rich country, we cannot keep our prisoners safe. If someone as high profile as him can be killed, anyone could be. I don't wish that for our prisoners.
Unfortunately it's not a rarity by any means and 5+ prisoners are murdered most years, with dozens more near misses.
And if you have never had cause to worry about the safety of someone in prison, then you are incredibly privileged and probably would do well not to comment.

I think it’s more disgusting that a man was charged with conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a one year old girl, raped a baby boy, made indecent images of children and god knows what else that hasn’t been brought to light. But hey, to each their own.

You are not privileged just because you don’t know someone in prison.

I hope the screws turned a blind eye.

Mrsplants · 11/10/2025 23:26

I read he’d been grooming fans even from prison. I don’t think he would ever have been rehabilitated (is that even possible for someone so evil?) and children would have always been at risk with him still in the world.

Restlessinthenorth · 11/10/2025 23:26

@JudgeBread perhaps move to a country where the death penalty is in play? No one is questioning the devastation caused by his horrendous crimes. He was being punished for them in the way our judicial system allows.murders in our prisons are a state failing and put staff doing the hardest of jobs at horrendous risk.

All this “he got out of his sentence” and “I wish he’d been alive to continue to suffer” sentiment is understandable but misplaced.

I used to (within the last 6 years) work in a notorious men’s prison. I won’t say the name here, but it’s one you’ll have heard of.

The protection prisoners (paedophiles, rapists, grasses) are all lumped together but they are completely separate from your everyday criminal. They never, ever come into any sort of contact - ever. The protection blocks are quiet (expected as a fair portion of the punters are convicted of historic crimes and are now in their 70s), very little trouble, almost non-existent violence. They get everything a standard prisoner gets, just lots more protection and no expectation of work etc.

There’s no suffering, they’re socialising with people of the same ilk as them. They’re all pals, speak to each other like friends in a pub would.

Unfortunately, you’re kidding yourself if you think they are in some hellish nightmare. They’re not.

Yes, the paedophiles and rapists and grasses ARE kept away from the rest of the prisoners. It's a well documented fact that they are loathed. Occasionally someone will get near them though. Not sorry Ian Watkins has been killed.

Good news at last.

Agree. And not to mention god knows what he did to animals considering the animal related videos that were found on his laptop.

29 years with parole possible after 20 is not justice for what he did. If the death penalty were an option in this country it's what he should've got. He should've been taken out the back and shot in the head.

This is a close second best as far as I'm concerned.

Restlessinthenorth · 11/10/2025 23:31

@Noodledog not just the trauma of seeing a dead body. The trauma of having to intervene and their own lives being at risk, and subsequently the trauma of potential accountability of something going wrong on their watch. Believe it or not, Prison staff aren't appointed to be moral gatekeepers. A massive part of their job is maintaining prisoner safety. It's what they sign up to.

Given the amount of violent people in prison, I think prison staff are doing an incredible job in keeping many truly vile people as safe as they can.

Again, how would you have kept Watkins completely safe? (Realistic ideas preferred).

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/10/2025 23:33

I'm glad he's dead

TheGreatWesternShrew · 11/10/2025 23:33

I really hate that British prisons have such a problem with violence. If someone can be murdered inside a maximum security prison then where is anyone safe?

However as people have said I’m not upset about that on Watkin’s account but on the principle of the matter. Couldn’t care less what happened to that man.

abracadabra1980 · 11/10/2025 23:35

tinybeautiful · 11/10/2025 17:43

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

My first thought also.

Restlessinthenorth · 11/10/2025 23:37

@Noodledog don't understand your point. I'm not criticising those staff or making any suggestions about what they should or shouldn't have done. Quite the contrary. I've worked n prison/ myself. Make no mistake, they wil now be questioned about that though.

I'm saying staff are massively put at risk in all sorts of ways when murders happen. That's my whole point

Report on an unannounced inspection of HMP Wakefield by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons (30 June – 10 July 2025).

Levels of violence had increased, and many prisoners did not feel safe. There were too few places in work and education activities, and the regime was not managed effectively; around half the population was locked up during the working day. The prison’s infrastructure had declined and required investment; security, living conditions and the functioning of workshops were all affected.

What did you work as? I'm guessing not as an officer on the sex offenders wing. Play therapist?

That's awful, very sad to read. In positive news, a child rapist will not be released to rape more children.

Restlessinthenorth · 11/10/2025 23:45

@Noodledog a nurse.

That's good, you'll be able to offer support to anyone traumatised by this news.

Sorry this has been so upsetting for you, btw

Restlessinthenorth · 11/10/2025 23:49

@Noodledog how pathetic. The people traumatised by this murder , and there will be many, will absolutely need support. Glad you think it's something to trivialise.

You can despise someone's behaviour without thinking that murders should be celebrated in British prisons

You keep asking how the prison could he improved / changed Noodle, I thought I'd give you some pointers. Since you keep asking.

Again, many of us work in jobs where we see innocent people suffer trauma every fucking day. So feel sad about this if you must, most normal people won't. And I'm going to bed now as I need to get up in the morning to support people who suffer trauma who haven't attempted to rape babies.

hexsnidgett · 11/10/2025 20:07

Do you really want prisoners killing each other in prison?

I don’t want my taxes to pay for a baby rapist to have 3 hot meals a day. So I’m not bothered if they take each other out.

Zodiacrobat · 12/10/2025 00:09

MummytoE · 11/10/2025 22:35

I would have preferred him to be alive and suffering horribly everyday

Suffering? Probably better living conditions than half the pensioners in the uk! He wouldn’t have had to worry about his heating or food bills.

GingerPaste · 12/10/2025 00:26

It’s great news as far as I’m concerned.

It costs £1000+ per week to keep scum like him in prison. I’d rather not be wasting my taxes to keep him there.
