I can't say im sad about it

I think it's disgusting that in a rich country, we cannot keep our prisoners safe. If someone as high profile as him can be killed, anyone could be. I don't wish that for our prisoners.
Unfortunately it's not a rarity by any means and 5+ prisoners are murdered most years, with dozens more near misses.
And if you have never had cause to worry about the safety of someone in prison, then you are incredibly privileged and probably would do well not to comment.

Prisons do what they reasonably can to keep prisoners safe given they’re surrounded by thousands of other highly dangerous, cunning and manipulative individuals. But short of locking them away in individual padded cells and never letting them see the light of day again (which some consider a human rights abuse), these things will happen.

Do you really want prisoners killing each other in prison?

Frankly it's preferable to the thought of someone like Ian Watkins being released one day

CrispEater2000 · 11/10/2025 20:48

It's nothing to be sad about but at the same time, as someone who grew up through the time he grew to fame, it doesn't feel insignificant.

Phoenix1Arisen · 11/10/2025 20:50

if your son/brother/uncle goes to prison for a short while for a relatively silly mistake, is it ok for him to be murdered? Not just a slap, a thump. Murdered?

Be careful what you wish for.

(Grandmother of 2 serving prison officers, one still having treatment of a shank wound to the neck...missed arteries by luck!)

sittingonabeach · 11/10/2025 20:51

I’m not sad about him being dead, but do worry about how this happened and if it could happen to a prison guard

Nobody goes to prison for a ‘short while for a silly mistake’. Paedophiles with ‘images only’ (no in person offending) usually do not get any jail time, not for the first offence. Prison space is so lacking that it is reserved only for dangerous or repeat offenders.

ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyour · 11/10/2025 20:53

I am glad we no longer have to pay to house this disgusting life form. His depravity was beyond comprehension. I am glad he is dead.

Ah we’re pleased Ian Watkins is dead. Sorry, assumed the title was pretty, blooming obvious.

Sometimes it really doesn’t matter. And I’m pro life! (Obviously not a good one, but I knew that!)

Phoenix1Arisen · 11/10/2025 21:03

Have you never heard of 'on remand'? Have you never heard of 'travesty of justice'? Have you never heard of 'sentence overturned'?

I won't ever defend wickedness but i do believe that execution can never be right.

But he wasn’t executed. He was murdered. Nobody authorised this, it just happened and we are not sad about it.

Sevenfold · 11/10/2025 21:08

Can’t pretend I’m sad.

i was going to tell the OP that’s there’s already a thread on this.

but your post opens an interesting conversation… oh no it doesn’t. Your post makes me sick. Do you know what this piece of scum did? He did many things but he raped a baby. Not even a child which is bad enough. But a baby! Fucking disgusting and I wish I hadn’t read your post and got myself worked up responding to you.

MsCandlelight · 11/10/2025 21:13

I’ve never heard of him, but crimes against young children and babies?! Sentenced to 29 years?!
May he never rest in peace and may his soul burn 🔥 in ever lasting hell and damnation.

Mischance · 11/10/2025 21:26

If a prisoner can do this to a fellow prisoner then he can do the same to a member of staff. Prisons have to be safe for both inmates and staff or anarchy reigns.
Noone will mourn the passing of this man; but we should be concerned about security in prison.

I don’t think Ian Watkins’s death is a loss and I do think he deserves it. But I do agree with the sentiment of what you’re saying. It should not have been possible for it to happen.

Phoenix1Arisen · 11/10/2025 21:29

I'm going to bow out but what I cannot understand is why so many are happy to state they are thrilled he's been murdered.

MURDERED! Think about that.

I loathe his crimes. I do not minimise them.

If you don't like the way criminal justice is dealt with in this country, don't scold me....write to your MP, petition the government...and hope that your young people don't join the prison service believing that they can work for the public good...

There's a reason why the Prison Service has a HUGE problem recruiting and retaining staff.

The reason that's not good enough is if they can do it to another inmate, they can do it to a member of staff. If I worked there I don't think I'd be feeling very good about going into work in the morning. And it's not enough to dismiss it as beef between prisoners, these are some of the country's most dangerous inmates and they could go after anyone.

No one is going to shed any tears for Ian Watkins, but equally I don't have much time for anyone celebrating the manner of his death.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 11/10/2025 21:32

I'd rather the fucker saw out his sentence and died an old man in jail.
Prisoner on prisoner violence puts staff at risk and their job is hard enough as it is.

Fuckitydoodah · 11/10/2025 21:33

Good. I hope he rots in hell.

Janesmom · 11/10/2025 21:38

One of the most basic of rights in any civilised society is protecting the safety of those we incarcerate. It is much more a question of our civility than theirs.

I can only hope that senior leadership in the relevant prison are under criminal investigation for failing to ensure an appropriate level of safety.

People don’t go to prison for “silly mistakes”. He raped a baby. That is not a silly mistake. Never mind the rest of his rap sheet. People like him are targeted in prison. I have zero sympathy. Child killers/rapists get what they deserve.

I just had a Quick Look and there were 7 prisoners murdered in the last year. Comparatively, 8 prison guards have been murdered since 1850, the last one being in 1965. So while that’s a bit of a blunt instrument, and I’m absolutely not downplaying guard injuries, it seems the prisoners are selective when it comes to victims and guards are not a popular choice.

As a lawyer, please rest assured people most certainly do go to prison for silly mistakes.

Every year, huge numbers of individuals sent to prison are also acquitted at trial or appeal (most commonly having been held on remand, but not always)

DrAmeliaShepherdMD · 11/10/2025 21:44

Not remotely sad he’s dead. Bit sad that he’s now excused from living with the consequences of his actions by serving his full sentence.

And at a broader level I’m not ok with inmates killing each other, yes I do feel the baby rapist arguably deserved it but if we decide that makes it ok then where does one draw the line? It’s for a judge and jury to convict and punish criminals, not their fellow inmates. That way chaos lies.

What kind of lawyer? Conveyancing? Social care? What?

What kind of ‘silly mistakes’ are you referring to? Supplying class A drugs? Killing somebody after getting behind the wheel drunk? What?
