Labour isn't working - Thread 12

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

DH was resisting taking his pension when eligible. (He's 70). As soon as the GE was called he applied for it. Said that it was clear that means testing was next.

He's also regretting that he never took a private pension. He preferred to put money into bricks and mortar and we have a small rental. Possibly a mistake......

A lot of us relied on a rental when it became clear private pensions were not backed up and could all be lost in a financial crash. As we’ve seen many a time
Only Government pensions are secure
Now with those who invested in second property ownership and rentals being regarded as pariahs of the state and affordability waning that’s all been lost.
Your dh did the right thing at the time.

Catatemyhomework · 08/10/2025 11:58

I know they will freeze income tax rates and remove higher rate tax relief from pensions. So that's us fucked before they even announce anything else.

Catatemyhomework · 08/10/2025 11:59

That's just the low hanging fruit. I think we might need some nice Christmas posts after 26 November. Doubt I'll be able to afford to buy anything for Christmas.

Me too. I have had to trim down DDs bday (Halloween) and Xmas. We are never extravagant anyway but this year will feel like bloody Scrooge 😞

Ditto. I can almost feel a winter of discontent coming on. That was under a labour government too.

Kemi just announced that they will scrap Stamp Duty if they get in.

I feel you. I really do. We're the same here. Honestly if I tighten my belt anymore I'll snap in half. I used to go to the hairdressers twice a year for colour and cut. Now I buy hairdye on amazon and cut my own. I probably look a fright but I cannot afford the hairdressers anymore. My daughters 19th birthday last week was very low key. Just a few bits for her room. There is no spare money. I don't understand how all the shops are so full and restaurants so rammed when I walk past. My dd works in town and she said its always so busy. It never used to be like this. She asked me if no one else goes to work. I told her it's probably likely.

And reverse farming and education taxes

I mean obviously she has to but it's pretty irrelevant in terms of increasing their vote share.

What I want to hear is that the next government will undo what Labour has done. As it stands, whatever the next government plans to do will be a waste of time until they have unravelled the fiscal and legslational nightmare imposed on the country by Labour. We almost need to go bust so that the next government can start again

If it's anything like my local town, weatherspoons is busy all day. It's customers aren't working!

I agree which is why long term an IMF intervention wouldn't be the worst thing. It would force government to reduce spending BUT its incredibly unlikely to happen I think. It would at least re-set the narrative

Is it

Abolishing tax on education could definately bring in votes
Farmers would go with the Conservatives too

and scrapping all Stamp Duty would pick up a lot of voters…surely

If PRR is lost on higher value property sales saving on stamp would equal out for some.

All sounds better than Starmer’s nonsense speech.

Remeber the good old days when Keir Starmer stood up and said the Labour would be the savious of our country and there would be no need to worry, everything is fully costed. We won't come for more money?

Dh and I took our boys out for lunch a few weeks back and I was stunned by the cost of a pint!

EmeraldRoulette · 08/10/2025 12:20

I never understood stamp duty

On the subject of digital, this is a diversion, but hopefully someone will understand how I feel - and how my mum feels, she's elderly

I have third-party access to her bank account, so there are limitations to what I can do with her money, which is quite right

However, due to the banks all going online, we have been trying to do something in person in branch, which she did three or four years ago without a problem

Now they just don't do it. I pointed out that as a third-party, I'm limited to what I can do online. The only suggestion they have is that I run her banking entirely. This would involve a joint account.

From what I can see, I'd have to go through biometrics to get that sorted.

It's literally a really simple thing, but I'll grant you It does involve a lot of money.

To be honest, I think they can do it in branch but they don't want to.

I'm obviously accustomed to digital and online everything. But it just feels like the amount of hassle and hoops you have to jump through to do basic things are ridiculous these days. Writing a cheque was a lot easier, certainly for her.

Anyway, I appreciate I've been made really irritable by it, not what I needed this morning. But it did make me think about the amount of chaos that would happen with digital ID as well.

I have been vaguely aware that they were giving us something of a break after the horrors of lockdown, and I was expecting full rollout of digital currency and compulsory digital ID a lot earlier.

So I do feel as if I've had a break from the crap. But then I also feel quite manipulated.

I don't really know how to present this information without sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but I suspect there are some people on here who know exactly what I mean

I do think digital ID will be presented as a way of solving a lot of annoying problems

We are lucky to have a bank but I'm sure it will be closing soon

Also, I genuinely think these people don't consider what happens when they are elderly. It would've been okay for mum to do online banking but following a couple of small strokes, the risk of numbers and getting them wrong is just far too high to be doing banking.

Rivalled · 08/10/2025 12:20

Scrapping stamp duty is an excellent policy so that people can move for better opportunities, it is a really bad tax that keeps people in the wrong accommodation for too long.

The problem is Reform have already committed to reversing farm and education taxes.
Where I live is prime flag on lampposts and Reform took the whole council from Labour. If I vote Tory then I risk letting Labour in.
Unless they can perform a miracle Tories just aren't strong enough to contest seats against Reform. I would love for that not to be true but I'm just taking election by election.

I am rural and all the farmers I know are 100% committed to Reform

My friends and I have actually started going to wetherspoons because although most of us work in professional roles or are retired it's the only place we can ensure is within the budget for us all.

Gotta say- best price in town for a sauvignon blanc by far and a really decent english breakfast. But previously we might have patronised an independent establishment. And we certainly don't go out as often nowadays. I see cafes and pubs closing and feel guilty, but I have to look after my pocket too.

Another one who has already told DCs that we are scaling back hard on Christmas. I'm in my overdraft at the end of every month as it is now with VAT on fees and COL rises.

I’m in a Conservative seat but given a recent reform demo and flags everywhere I wonder if we’ll go the same way

We are a farming area too
