Best {?} on toast?

Eggs Royale for me. It's eggs Benedict but with smoked salmon instead of ham. I use toasted bread instead of muffins because I've always got some on hand.
Toast, too much butter, salmon, poached egg, shop bought hollandaise on top. Lovely.

CONTROVERSIAL: Beans are nice, but better if you serve them separately so the toast so it doesn't go as soggy, sticky and damp as a toddler's undernose.

Thick wholemeal granary toast made in an Aga, then lashing of salted butter and thick-cut Seville orange marmalade.

Tintackedsea · 05/10/2025 08:50

Sourdough bread rubbed with a garlic clove
homegrown tomatoes
salt and pepper
drizzle of good olive oil

or

hovis + cathedral city mature

or

homemade Seville orange marmalade

Or…

just about anything really! Mince toasties are excellent.

Mashed potato, with cheese on top, and some tabasco, and banged under the grill.

Kerrygold.

Nothing else needed.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/10/2025 09:24

Pate. Hot toast then cold pate spread on it.

OldBeyondMyYears · 05/10/2025 09:44

Soooo many things are good on toast!! I have lots of favourites, including just simple beans (with brown sauce 😃).

A real heartwarming topping for me is Welsh Rarebit…my gran used to make this for us as a treat when we stayed at hers, and it’s continued to be a lovely Sunday night feast whilst snuggling on the sofa. 😍

deeahgwitch · 05/10/2025 09:52

Chunky pate on really well browned toast.

The toast needs to be soggy and buttery with beans, and mayo on top.

Mayo on top of beans? 😱

there's always one

Kerrygold.

Nothing else needed.

Well that’s true too - or any Irish butter.

Millionsofmonkeys · 05/10/2025 09:57

Butter, Peeled plum tomatoes, a sprinkle of salt and lots of pepper.

Or, freshly poached eggs on marmite toast.

What doesnt go on toast, how can you choose a best?

Jam and butter
Tahini and butter
Honey and butter
Cheese on toast
Peanut butter and butter and jam
Peanut butter, butter and chilli sauce
Sardines with melted cheese on top
Mushrooms
Tinned plum tomatoes
Scrambled eggs or fried eggs, copious butter
Beans mixed with butter

I miss toast.

I agree, everything can go on toast!

I too miss toast - as a low-carber it's an occasional treat so today I'm having sourdough with butter and two fried eggs 😋 and a dash of Lea & Perrins.

Snugglemonkey · 05/10/2025 10:07

I love toast. It is why I cannot go lower carb. I eat it every day. It is great just with butter, or pâté, or with avocado and a poached egg.

CoastalCalm · 05/10/2025 10:12

Cold toast butter honey and sea salt
Hot beans and fried eggs

Seeline · 05/10/2025 10:29

Posh cheese on toast - slice of ham, cheese on top then sliced tomato on top of that.

Beans with loads of grated cheese

Marmalade - thick cut.

If my DH is making it for me I always have to say butter and marmalade, or butter and jam otherwise I just get dry toast with jam 😲

I love marmite on toast but have to do that myself to get the ratio of Marmite to butter correct. Bonus if I manage to get the temperature of the toast exactly right so that the butter doesn't melt and you can mix the marmite in.

steamingin · 05/10/2025 10:33

Mayo on beans is the food of the gods @Westfacing 😋

AdaColeman · 05/10/2025 10:59

Croque Monsieur is a favourite here, also sardines on toast is hard to beat, salted butter is a must for both.

CharlieKirkRIP · 05/10/2025 11:36

Vegetarian Welsh Rarebit is the nicest but takes a bit longer to make than simple cheese and marmite on toast which is divine.

TheSandgroper · 05/10/2025 11:45

Butter and Vegemite is the acme of toast toppings. However, for a change, stewed apple is like a hug for your tummy on a cold morning.

Why not marmalade and cheese?

Theres a country where they do this and I cant remember which one.

henlake7 · 05/10/2025 13:35

Beans on toast.

Not Heinz though, home made bean spread (I like black beans, butter beans or chickpeas mashed with abit of mayo and maybe some thinly chopped celery or cucumber or a tin of sweetcorn added).

AhBiscuits · 05/10/2025 13:39
  1. Poached egg
  2. Cheese
  3. Beans
  4. Marmite
  5. Peanut butter
Tintackedsea · 05/10/2025 17:26

@soupyspoon
that’s how dh has it!

apricot jam and hallomui is a thing in Greece and Turkey; honey and cheese in Spain.

soupyspoon · 05/10/2025 17:43

Honey and cheese is big in this house too

soupyspoon · 05/10/2025 17:45

I forgot my favourite from when I used to eat bread properly and regularly

Thick slice of bread, mood dependant whether its white or wholemeal, not regular sandwich bread, proper bread.

Toasted

Copious butter and I mean copious

Full fat cottage cheese dolloped on top

Salt. A fair amount.

That butter running down my chin with a cottage cheese moustache. Hot toast, cold cottage cheese.

Tarkan · 05/10/2025 18:04

Eggs Florentine for me. Like you OP I do it on toast instead of a muffin and the spinach in it makes me feel like it’s at least slightly healthy.

No shop bought Hollandaise for me though, I’ve perfected my very quick microwave version so I just make my own now and go to town with pouring it all over. To the point I definitely need the spinach to make up for all the butter in the sauce. Blush
