İf you're against the anti immigration rhetoric in the news...

Will you join me in hanging a flag in solidarity of the people who make up our great diverse country?

I had an immigrant grandfather so I've just ordered a flag from that country to hang from my window, as well as one from the country my daughter was born in. Please note, this isn't an idea to vandalise anything or anywhere and hang flags from places other than our own homes. This also isn't an anti UK flag post, but rather, let's showcase all the backgrounds which make the UK what it is, including the UK flag.

It is a lovely idea. Got to fight the hate somehow. I saw a British heart shaped flag outside someone's house and it said foreigners welcome here. So simple but really kind and welcoming.

I think the problem at the moment with the flags is the ambiguity of the motive.

If you watched the parade for the women's football team when they won the Euros, you understand, by context, why there were so many of those flags flying and being waved.

there seems to be no overt reason given for "the raising of the colours", as they've called it, for this sudden flying of the flag.

So, not unnaturally, some people (me include) have seen it as a dogwhistle for people not brave enough to own the fact that they are racist.
are these people flying the flag to celebrate England, all its inhabitants whatever their colour, creed or ethnic origin? Or are they flying it in an attempt to intimidate people they see as "other"?

I don't think it's helpful to start a campaign with the same type of ambiguity.

Agree I said this to my husband earlier. When it’s football or a royal party we understand the flags motive and feel proud. The flags I see at the moment I don’t understand the motive and just look chavy to me and I’m embarrassed. I was embarrassed earlier that some have gone up on my high st (in east London one of the most diverse boroughs in the whole of London!!!)

Flags from Germany, Ireland, Scotland, France, Pakistan and Portugal on order as we speak. I've got some family who live in America but I don't much feel like putting that flag up at the moment.😂

I love it!!

Ooh yeah my daughter's country of birth is The USA. I'm debating putting that out, because I wouldn't want people to think that I'm for the current administration. But then I remind myself, it doesn't matter how people take the message, it's about where in my heart it's coming from and that's a love for the country of origin and the people rather than whoever is in power.

İt's not ambiguous, it's about saying 'whatever your reason for putting up flags, thanks for making us think of all the different histories which make up this country, here's ours to add to that, because they matter equally'.

Does Pakistan think of all the different histories that made up its country when raising its national flag? Would you expect them to continually acknowledge the contribution of other countries by raising a Bangladeshi, Afghan, Tajik, Uzbek, Turkmen, Indian, Sri Lankan and Burmese flag every time it puts the Pakistani flag up?

Or is it only the UK that makes a forced declaration of gratitude to every nation with whom it has interacted throughout history in order to put its national flag up?

usedtobeaylis · 26/09/2025 22:00

I'm so tired of flags in all honesty. I don't know what to do to show solidarity in my community and with my neighbours but it's not flags.

I've been to plenty of countries where immigrants peacefully fly their country of origin or ethnicity flag.

But you wouldn’t be flying it peacefully - you’re encouraging an active campaign to piss off a group of already-pissed-off people. Are you white? If so then try to think of the effect this would have on non-white people. The last thing we need is a standoff ultimately resulting in further violence.

Underthinker · 26/09/2025 22:11

This is a great idea. My grandfather fled from Nazi Germany. Have just ordered a flag.

This.... 'oh you evil racist! How dare you fly this country's flag, that's horrible! I'm going to proudly fly another country's flag, because them flying their flag is AMAZING! How wonderful they have pride in their country! This should be celebrated!!'

SeaAndStars · 26/09/2025 22:22

We'd all be better of if instead of investing in printed Chinese nylon we all put the money in a charity tin.

Nayyercheekyfeckers · 26/09/2025 22:30

Or you could just hang up an England Flag, OP to show that British pride doesn't just belong to those largely white males on council estates that are associated with the right. Surely that's the most united thing to do, which also takes the wind out of the sails of some.

I’ve said this for a while now. If everyone flies the flag, all negative connotations will dissipate.

TheKingOfTheCats · 26/09/2025 22:40

Super idea, OP!

AnneLovesGilbert · 26/09/2025 22:46

Presumably everyone or nearly everyone living here has chosen to live here if they were born elsewhere so why would they object to the flag of their adopted country?

Stick anything you want in your windows.

I wasn’t born here fwiw and my parents weren’t either and are from a different country again. We’ve chosen to live here.

Amazing that you ‘love’ somebody flying the Pakistani flag - a country that is about as far from tolerance, religious freedom and equal rights for women as you can get - but can’t bring yourself to fly the USA flag presumably because you think they are also very far from the above? How do you square that one?

This, let's take it back. I like it when it's for football, rugby etc, lets not allow it to be commandeered.. 👍
