Will you join me in hanging a flag in solidarity of the people who make up our great diverse country?

I had an immigrant grandfather so I've just ordered a flag from that country to hang from my window, as well as one from the country my daughter was born in. Please note, this isn't an idea to vandalise anything or anywhere and hang flags from places other than our own homes. This also isn't an anti UK flag post, but rather, let's showcase all the backgrounds which make the UK what it is, including the UK flag.

My family fled the Nazis. German is the last flag I’d fly.

Oh a modern german flag, that would have been a better idea. I did think I was getting funny looks from the neighbours.

I’m sick to death of all bloody flags and would happily ban the lot of them only to be shown at the Olympics.

Does Pakistan think of all the different histories that made up its country when raising its national flag? Would you expect them to continually acknowledge the contribution of other countries by raising a Bangladeshi, Afghan, Tajik, Uzbek, Turkmen, Indian, Sri Lankan and Burmese flag every time it puts the Pakistani flag up?

Or is it only the UK that makes a forced declaration of gratitude to every nation with whom it has interacted throughout history in order to put its national flag up?

interesting use of "interacted" there - should read Colonised

Do you feel the same about people wearing pin badges of their national flag? I have two of them; Union Flag and the St. George's Cross. I don't wear them to be goady, I'm proud of my country and heritage. I also wear a silicone wristband of the St. George's Cross which is more like kicky ball paraphernalia. So far nobody has confronted me. I did think of getting a flag pole erected, but unfortunately there are too many idiots out there willing to destroy property, so I chose the more subtle way.

What if the immigrants are racists? Or criminals?

Where would you like to deport British citizens to?

Funny how the French and Spanish colonies never seem to get the same level of criticism as the British. And that’s before we go back to the Romans, and the Arabs, and the Greeks …

Agree. The idea that we openly welcome ALL immigrants - who are individuals and just as capable of violence, rape, trafficking, drug offences etc - is as dehumanising and moronic a position as the racist one. 🙄

Hanging foreign flags is an incitement to violence, surely. At a time when Britain is claiming its voice and asking to be respected.

So what? Do you think all the Islamic countries should show deference to all the land they captured by violent conquest (aka nearly all of it) when they raise their flag?

Upstartled · 27/09/2025 12:06

Could you just not be so ridiculously divisive in pretending that concerns around uncontrolled immigration and illegal immigration is the same as anti-immigration sentiment and xenophobia? The hard working immigrants are as annoyed about the lack of sensible policy in this area and the unintended consequences that are foist disproportionately on the poorest and least resourced communities in the country as everybody else.

No flag is an incitement to violence, they're all just bits of cloth. If people stopped letting themselves get wound up by England, Union Jack, Palestine or Pride flags, everyone's mood would be improved.

Very good points.

It's not a bit of cloth, though. It represents a country.

I don't know what you mean by that last sentence. In what way is Britain "claiming it's voice"? Who is it asking respect from?

Yes, or the Islamic Empire.
Just think of what the Belgians and the Dutch did, too.

This is a great one, for those in the 'reclaim the flag' camp :)

Surely it would be better if it was the St George's cross?

AltitudeCheck · 27/09/2025 12:16

Our street is lined with England flags, attached to lampposts with cable ties, in some case obscuring traffic signs, it's only been a few weeks but already they look tatty.

I'd love to replace alternate flags with a combination of flags from other nations, rainbow flags, our county flag or perhaps just this one

ampel · 27/09/2025 12:34

I grew up in Germany, we don’t really do flags. Maybe I’ll just put up a big sign that says ‘Vergangenheitsbewältigung

CatrionaBalfour · 27/09/2025 13:46

Genuine question; do you think that immigrants can't be racist?

PaganCatholicHuh · 27/09/2025 13:54

The English are on track to become an ethnic minority in their own land which is an unprecedented, almost unthinkable event and rivals only ethnic cleansing in its gravity. Now is not the time for this.

I love German. That is a fantastic compound word.

Yes because that wouldn’t look tatty at all would it? Especially after a few days of rain and bird shit, and the backdrop of a 500 year old church or cottages.

Yes, or the Islamic Empire.
Just think of what the Belgians and the Dutch did, too.

The Belgian Congo was seen as the most wicked of all the Colonial rules.

Virtually every single Islamic country has been formed through violent conquest and religion being forced upon people at pain of death.

This is very much not a white thing. The ‘Free Palestiners’ think nothing of asserting that the indigenous population of the region are more entitled to the land, but find it incredibly racist if anyone says it about the UK.
