Will you join me in hanging a flag in solidarity of the people who make up our great diverse country?

I had an immigrant grandfather so I've just ordered a flag from that country to hang from my window, as well as one from the country my daughter was born in. Please note, this isn't an idea to vandalise anything or anywhere and hang flags from places other than our own homes. This also isn't an anti UK flag post, but rather, let's showcase all the backgrounds which make the UK what it is, including the UK flag.

This is what I can’t get my head around - quite often the same people who are so quick to dismiss the “white working class” will then defend terrorism /rioting /crime by minorities because “it’s understandable….. they are oppressed…..its the fault of the West…”

And it’s always aways people who are so far removed from the problems that the working class of the UK face it would be laughable if it wasn’t so bloody obtuse.

Literally no one is defending terrorism.

Yeah they'll do. Let's talk Axel Southport stabber, a terrorist! yet as a great woman poet at speakers corner back in the summer said ' while 3 little girls were being taken away in a hearse the media were saying hes not a terrorist hes neuro diverse!!" And yes they really were.

How sad to have so much immature vitriol running through ones brain.

And obsessing about it at night in bed!

Overthewaytwice · 01/11/2025 11:04

No, my immigrant grandparents chose to move here and contributed to the UK for most of their adult lives. The English flag and Union Jack belongs to them as much as anyone else.

I'd much rather look for ways to show that our flag is for everyone than leave it to the racists. A mosque near me has taken to flying the English flag which I think makes he point beautifully.

Why can’t we just make a whole new flag and ban the St George’s cross? Sadly it will never shake the association with racism and colonialism so we should make a new and inclusive one. I also think we should change the name of the country to be more inclusive too. England is too outdated. I had something in mind like Diversia, I think it sounds bold and really gets across what we are trying to achieve as a culture.

White working class British males are negatively portrayed in society for a reason. They are the ones constantly rioting and assaulting law enforcement over alleged immigrant crimes, they are the ones flying racist flags upside down on public property and also are the ones who are voting for Reform in their droves.

Frankly they need to sort themselves out.

Ahh yes they should try and be more like the virtue signalling middle class women waving their Palestine flags every weekend (to make themselves feel like white saviours) instead. Those pesky peasants in their council houses, grrr.

And the National Anthem changed to "Insania". Sung by Peter Andre.

Lool the UK flag never stood for racism or colonialism, how ridiculous. All it symbolises is the country. A country with an amazing history, good and bad. I don't think erasing history is the way forward unless under the most dire emergency situations. This isn't one of them.

Deep yourself our of this Doom hole. Stop thinking Union Jack = racism. This is self-depreciation gone too far. Most immigrants don't think this. What is does symbolise is being proud of this country and the people who live in it. There I fixed it for you.

Weeallthewayhome · 18/06/2026 12:43

Laughing to myself at the idea of suggesting to the government and proud people of any country I’ve ever lived in that I might have an issue with their flag and please take it down.

Ffs.

And any right minded person must see that while immigration is a positive, uncontrolled eye watering numbers of incompatible cultures is a recipe for absolute disaster on all fronts.

I've seen a few people with flags of the world bunting, which I like to think is a bit of a push back.

I'm not anti a discussion about immigration. Too much of the wrong kind of immigration is a problem and shoukd be discussed. It's people feeling that it can't be discssued without accusations of racisim (since Balir and Cameron) is what's brought us here.

What I do strongly object to is certain individuals creating this idea that everything that's wrong with/in the country is down to immigration.

And, the way these discussions often are about skin colour really.

Kingfisherfly · 18/06/2026 13:49

I do wish the people so attached to, and proud of the Union Flag they feel the need to fly it, would learn which way up it goes.

Rubuxus · 18/06/2026 13:51

I don’t think now is the time to be political with flags. It’s literally the World Cup.

So yes get whatever flag you like but I dont think most people are going to read that as a political statement. More likely you love football and support X team

I have been reading some of these responses and I can’t believe that people aren’t getting the point.

I am sure that all the people posting on here about their grandfathers being immigrants are mainly talking about people who moved countries to work and inter grate with the community they moved to. That’s what
my Italian In laws did and that’s what my Indian grandmother did. That’s what, more recently, my polish friends did.

Girls can’t walk through the park where Iive without getting followed. Older women too - although, I have a dog, a soppy golden retriever, but she’s big and lots of the men who hang around my town aimlessly are terrified of dogs, so they steer clear.

Staff at my daughters school stand by the bus stop as its opposite a hotel housing men, they shout sexual comments at the girls and expose their genitals at the windows.

A girl was sexually assaulted a few weeks ago walking home from school.

My closest city is now unrecognisable in huge parts.

People can be so dense. No one is talking about about your grandad who came to England, opened a shop and worked hard.

He’s not a man child for wearing his “I’m an immigrant” t shirt ffs! You are spectacularly missing the point! He is an NHS doctor who has spent 30 years treating people like you, your families, your friends etc… So when you want to shout your racist shit about immigrants being rapists you are including people like him. Because you are tarring people with the same brush because they are foreign. And guess what he’s sick of the casual racism being chatted by patients in front of him and the nurses, all the moaning about “those bloody immigrants” that patients have the fucking cheek to come out with literally whilst being treated by immigrants! His department is 90% immigrants, if they all left tomorrow it would have to shut down. So now he tells the racist patients that when they start their nonsense.

No. No one is including people like your husband in that, and you know it.

I (and others) am talking about the men who hang around in the park at the end of my road all day, across from the hotel they are housed I leering at women.

If you and your dh can’t see the difference, then there’s no helping you.

Does Pakistan think of all the different histories that made up its country when raising its national flag? Would you expect them to continually acknowledge the contribution of other countries by raising a Bangladeshi, Afghan, Tajik, Uzbek, Turkmen, Indian, Sri Lankan and Burmese flag every time it puts the Pakistani flag up?

Or is it only the UK that makes a forced declaration of gratitude to every nation with whom it has interacted throughout history in order to put its national flag up?

But we didn’t just ‘interact’ did we? We enslaved, colonised and redrew boundaries. Acknowledging the multiple cultures we are formed of feels like a small act of apology.

Did he come over on a boat and get housed in a hotel? Does he hang around town centres shouting lewd comments at school girls? That’s how he’s supposed to know.

And tell me, how is it ignorant not to like that behaviour form these men?

DM me, I’ll invite you to my house for the day and walk you round where I live. You can see if for yourself.

The word "interacted" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there! Colonized, invaded, subjected, exploited might be more accurate.

What’s the difference between the foreign looking men who hang around in groups or the white British looking men who hang around on corners or in parks? I see plenty of groups of white men, but who knows who any of these men really are? What their backgrounds are, or why they are hanging around with nothing to do all day? Plenty of unemployed men sadly - of all types of backgrounds and cultures. Perhaps it’s unemployment and lack of opportunities you should really be concerned about. And I’m not so naive that I don’t know full well a lot of this “protect our women” isn’t just another excuse for racism. Because an awful lot of these people shouting the odds about it don’t seem to give a shit about women when it’s British men abusing them.
World cup is on now, lots of women are at heightened risk of a beating from their male British partners. Probably the same kind of men out shouting hate about immigrants.
