Use of paracetamol in pregnancy and autism: Trump

MidnightPatrol · 22/09/2025 11:46

Trump is expected to announce later today that there is a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy, and autism.

As with his approach to covid, scientists have reacted with dismay at this development - a major Swedish study published in 2024 looked at 2.48m births and found no link.

A bit of a worrying development in terms of medical misinformation, pregnant women’s access to pain relief, and those with autism (and their parents).

He’s an idiot and his advisors should be ashamed of themselves allowing him to spread misinformation.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/09/2025 11:52

Load of bollock

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 22/09/2025 11:53

Can't wait to hear the very evidence informed, science based responses from his supporters on here 🙄

I think he also surrounds himself with other conspiracy theorists eg current Health Secretary and vaccine-sceptic Robert F Kennedy.

Honestly American women are getting a very raw deal.

Whoever is feeding him this rubbish has an agenda. Given the viewpoints of some of those more to the right I'd wager they are thinking they can somehow eradicate it, or those that have it. Something they thought in 1930s Germany too. Very worrying.

SirHumphreyRocks · 22/09/2025 12:01

That said, there is a clear link between being stupid and being a Republican apparently.

Finteq · 22/09/2025 12:02

The annoying thing is they expect women to just suffer if they're in pain.

What are they supposed to take?

The other medication available has definite risks.

It all ends with blaming the mum again.

CracklingFlames · 22/09/2025 12:03

I was horrified by this. Not only is it scary how he can just make shit up, it's another way to blame women.

ChattyGeePeaTea · 22/09/2025 12:04

I also heard that 100% of mothers of autistic children breathed air during pregnancy. You can't ignore the science people.

Finteq · 22/09/2025 12:04

And if a women has a fever or health problem that means she needs some Paracetamol.

It will likely cause even more harm to the baby if the fever isn't controlled than if the mum took Paracetamol.

DavidKeanu · 22/09/2025 12:05

I attended a lecture in the last 12 months by an NHS consultant that stated there was a link (not necessarily causative).

DavidKeanu · 22/09/2025 12:06

It didn't stop me taking it occasionally in pregnancy.

other medication hasn’t been tested on pregnant women that’s the issue, not necessarily that they pose a proven risk. The issue is the lack of testing, as foetus’s can’t consent and pregnant women arent queuing up to be tested on

yes some stuff we know crosses the placenta and can be a risk, but lots have never been formally tested.

placemats · 22/09/2025 12:10

I wonder what pain relief Trump's mother took during pregnancy?

Not unusual for even major health organisations to do this though.

The WHO has suggested eg women of childbearing age shouldn’t drink alcohol at all (just in case!) and NICE (UK health body) was a few years ago was wanting to piit if babies mothers had reported even drinking a single glass of alcohol on their child’s permanent medical records.

Oh look, let’s first force women to remain pregnant against their will and then take perfectly safe OTC medication used to help a multitude of symptoms away from them too so they really suffer for daring to have sex. That’ll teach them. Thanks, Republicans.

Needmorelego · 22/09/2025 12:15

This was "announced" a couple of weeks ago using the brand name of Tylenol.
Thankfully most actual medical experts said it's bollocks.

dreamingbohemian · 22/09/2025 12:16

Things like this are why I'm begging people in the UK to pay attention to the flood of American right wing money being poured into this country. All it takes is a few lunatics to get into positions of power and women will be so damaged.

Handmethegunandaskmeagain · 22/09/2025 12:17

If he’s going to base his anouncement on the paper published 14th of August by Baccarelli, it’s important to note the following:

Baccarelli noted in the “competing interests” section of the paper that he has served as an expert witness for a plaintiff in a case involving potential links between acetominophen use during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders.

I would want to have a very careful read of that paper and how they drew their conclusions, and how they’ve ruled out confounders (ie people take paracetamol for fever, so fever in pregnancy could be the cause of autism for example, rather than the paracetamol. Just as an example).

StrongandNorthern · 22/09/2025 12:18

I believe he suggested that drinking bleach could protect against Covid too.
Luckily no one took that too seriously either 😂

User987439 · 22/09/2025 12:21

The most obvious connection is that (undiagnosed) ND mums are more likely to use paracetamol during pregnancy. Autism/ADHD is linked with many chronic pain conditions, autoimmune issues, connective tissue disorders, MH disorders and sensory issues that increase the chances of a mother taking painkillers. Since paracetamol is the only safe painkiller during pregnancy, every pregnant woman will have taken that at some point. It's highly unlikely that any adult human can go 10 months of their life without taking a single painkiller.

smallglassbottle · 22/09/2025 12:21

Pretty sure my father's mother never took paracetamol during pregnancy seeing as he was born in 1926. He was ND, as am I and both my dcs. Seems genetic to me 🙄

I attended a lecture in the last 12 months by an NHS consultant that stated there was a link (not necessarily causative).

Could you link to this or even name the consultant?
Were they giving an opinion, was it research they had done or referencing other research?
A quick google brings up nothing (apart from links to today's mad announcement!)

Myfridgeiscool · 22/09/2025 12:22

@StrongandNorthern some people did believe him though didn’t they? They died!
