Use of paracetamol in pregnancy and autism: Trump

MidnightPatrol · 22/09/2025 11:46

Trump is expected to announce later today that there is a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy, and autism.

As with his approach to covid, scientists have reacted with dismay at this development - a major Swedish study published in 2024 looked at 2.48m births and found no link.

A bit of a worrying development in terms of medical misinformation, pregnant women’s access to pain relief, and those with autism (and their parents).

I wonder what Mrs Trump took when she was pregnant with Baby Donald? I would avoid that....

Indeed. At least people with Neurodivergent brains have a brain.

I really am so interested in why you think this.

What has RFK said or done which makes you think he is acting in bad faith?

Errmmm.. How about the fact that he totally denies the science and thinks he knows better??

One of my children was born with a serious congenital defect. I read every article about congenital defects. I scour all the research. Why? because I feel guilty. I feel that there MUST have been something that I did or did not do, that I ate, that I stayed somewhere or breathed in that meant this happened. that in some way its my fault. i had sole responsibility for her in the womb and I messed up in some way to cause this. every single mum with a child with a congenital defect goes through this. logically I know it was nothing I did that made this happen. but it doesnt matter I still beat myself up about it.

What a nasty fucking individual he is to make women everywhere feel that they made their child autistic. there will be suicides because of this announcement - women totally wracked by and overwhelmed by guilt. Who does this to women? really who thinks that this is acceptable.

Myfridgeiscool · 22/09/2025 14:14

A friend has twins: one is NT and one is ND. How does the orange blob explain that scenario?

CyanMaker · 22/09/2025 14:32

Another one of the Trump "expert" theorys is giving babies Tylenol before their series is shots causes Autism. Pediatricians have been recommending this for decades to ease any reaction to the shots and it does help.

Neemie · 22/09/2025 14:35

Advanced paternal age is a recognised risk factor for autism. Maybe that has touched a raw nerve with Trump and chums.

What was even more ridiculous about the announcement I read a couple of weeks ago (from whichever Kennedy it is was) that in the same announcement he seemed to think that paracetamol and ibuprofen are the same thing.
He referred to "Tylenol" (brand name for paracetamol/acetaminophen) and "Advil" which is Ibuprofen.
He seemed oblivious that they are two completely different medications.

Not the point of the thread but Tylenol does a acetaminophen + ibuprofen product and Advil has a ibuprofen+ acetaminophen product. So both brands do both now.

BestZebbie · 22/09/2025 15:46

I thought there is already evidence that (taking an awful lot) of paracetamol in the first trimester can (occasionally) affect male genital development and bring female puberty slightly earlier, so women in the UK are already advised to avoid it if possible at least until much later on (on a sliding scale to the point that taking it during early labour will have zero effect on the baby).

But, as has been frequently said today - having an intense fever in the first trimester is much more risky in terms of the potential for long-term damage.

Oh that's confusing.
But it was apparently the equivalent of saying "Nurofen" is the reason (which is the big brand name for ibuprofen in the UK).
In the UK everyone associates Calpol as paracetamol, Nurofen as ibuprofen.
In the USA it's Tylenol = Paracetamol (or that other name they call it), Advil= Ibuprofen.

Not to mention that he thinks you can diagnose mitochondrial disease by looking at a child, and that he believes autistic people can't ever work, have relationships, get an education and live independently. I mean @hamstersarse is a massive Trump fan, but you would hope for some ability to see RFK for the utter halfwit he is.

Which is extra-weird, because they've all met Elon Musk.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/09/2025 17:02

I didnt take any paracetamol in my first pregnancy. None!

DS1 has ASD.

I took it regularly with DS2 as I had pelvic arthropathy. DS2 is NT. As far as I know, but then I didnt know DS1 had autism until he was diagnosed by the Ed Psych when he was 7yo. I felt so guilty I hadn't seen it and spent years looking at the research around it. It's not vaccines, but we've known that for years, and it's not paracetamol.🙄

I'm very grateful for the research into autism. Unfortunately much of that and other research in the US has been defunded.

@hamstersarse your defence of RKJ and Trump is preposterous. Neither give a shit about science or facts. Or people.

Especially not women, children and the disabled. WTF should I be grateful for them or the shite that comes out of their mouths?Confused

Cuddlesup · 22/09/2025 17:04

True or not, suffice to say I wouldn’t take paracetamol if I were pregnant now (that’s no longer a possibility in reality, but I’m speaking theoretically.)

@mummymeister please know that it’s not your fault.
I dint think anyone (but some very ignorant people like the orange one) would ever think that either.

MaurineWayBack · 22/09/2025 17:06

What would you if you’re in pain then?

Warm baths, warm compresses/ice packs. Try and cope with it etc. I’m not saying I wouldn’t cave if I was in agony, but it would have to be intolerable. I gave birth to both my babies without any pain medication so I know I can take quite a bit.

MaurineWayBack · 22/09/2025 17:18

Well done you….
I have given birth with ‘no medication’ too.
And yet I’ve had strong painkiller prescribed by my GP when I was pg too.
Pain for a few hours when you know the end is in sight isn’t the same than pain for days on end. Ask any chronic pain sufferer.

MaurineWayBack · 22/09/2025 17:22

And that’s without talking about the obvious fact that paracetamol has never been shown to be a risk in pg or to increase the risk of autism.

So why you’d avoid it all cost is very baffling.

Avantiagain · 22/09/2025 17:40

He's full of shit.

I don’t really believe it increases the risk of autism, but now the idea is out there I would be too scared to risk it just in case.
I never believed vaccinations caused autism either, but I paid for my babies’ measles, mumps and rubella jabs to be done separately rather than all in one - from an abundance of caution. I’m sure it was unnecessary to do this, but I scare easily.

blacksax · 22/09/2025 17:52

That man is such a fuckwit. And anyone who believes what he says is just proving that they too are a fuckwit.

Instead of targeting paracetamol, perhaps some research needs to be done into what sort of medication turns people into dangerous megalomanics.
