Use of paracetamol in pregnancy and autism: Trump

MidnightPatrol · 22/09/2025 11:46

Trump is expected to announce later today that there is a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy, and autism.

As with his approach to covid, scientists have reacted with dismay at this development - a major Swedish study published in 2024 looked at 2.48m births and found no link.

A bit of a worrying development in terms of medical misinformation, pregnant women’s access to pain relief, and those with autism (and their parents).

Pretty sure the autistics would have found a link by now if there was one.

@DoYaThinkImLexi there is apparently a high level of a specific genetic condition among the Amish (I can't remember exactly what it's called right now) because their gene pool is obviously fairly small.
Autism is also genetic.
The Amish probably have lower rates of autism because it isn't in their genetics as much.
Unfortunately I doubt Trump has considered that.

Tay Sachs? A quick Google does such there are a few genetic conditions

This goes even beyond the reach of medical disinformation and well into a situation that is directly endangering women.

How many men will now use this "information" to abuse the mothers of their ND children?

Swathes of the US and the world will believe this bullshit and use it against the women who have given birth to ND children.

It's not a stretch to await the first report of women being reported to the police / social services for causing harm to their kids due to taking paracetamol in pregnancy, even if prescribed by a Dr.

This is dystopian, like so much of Trump's presidencies, and it's absolutely terrifying.

Totally agree. It's only one step down from blaming women for miscarriages.

Yes apparently Tay-sachs is one and
Angelman Syndrome and Dwarfism all run in higher levels of the Amish communities.

You know the whole conspiracy theory about how the "elite" know the cure for cancer, but don't share it with the masses? Except somehow Joe Biden (who has advanced cancer diagnosis recently) didn't get to join the Elite, or maybe he is the sacrificial lamb so the rest of the Elite don't have to reveal their secrets how to not die of cancer etc. And on that conspiracy logic, King Charles & Kate Middleton were just "pretending".

Trump & RFKJr spouting nonsense ... does that prove the "Elite" are as dipshitted as the rest of us? Have they proven the conspiracy theory wrong? I interpret their nonsense that way, that the "Elite" have no special secret knowledge at all.

What would you if you’re in pain then?

But what if you've caught a virus from your existing toddler and are spiking a high fever? That is agreed to be dangerous to the foetus. That's when I took it (second and third pregnancies) and all my children are NT.

Morningsleepin · 25/09/2025 18:01

I've just seen that Harvard and John Hopkins also say that paracetamol can cause autism and the makers of Tylenol say that it is not recommended during pregnancy. RFK says that taking Tylenol under doctor's instructions should be OK, but the less the better. I also despise Trump but I wouldn't take it to level of risking poisoning my child

That said, there is a clear link between being stupid and being a Republican apparently.

lol!

Why would it "poison " your child ?

None of them have actually said any of those things...

But it didn't say 'you shouldn't take paracetamol in pregnancy'. It said there may be an association. They didn't mention causation.

Exactly. Plus they said that rather than a blanket limitation, they’d recommend using it as little it for as short a time as possible - which is reasonable advice for any medication, pregnant or not. And they said the association was strongest when used for over four weeks. That is a lot of paracetamol. They don’t talk about two pills for a headache, once in 9 months.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/09/2025 20:29

Oh quelle fucking surprise. RFK Jr has announced a review into abortion medication. That will be deemed dangerous and then banned I assume.

The number of cases in the U.K. re poisoning’ from paracetamol are much lower in the U.K. than in the US.

Several reasons for that:

  • packages are much lower and you can’t buy more than 2 boxes at once. Compare that to the 180 tablets box you can buy there.
  • many other very common medication actually have paracetamol in them. People aren’t aware and it’s not made visible. The result is that many more people actually unintentionally overdose.
So yes, I’m sure you wouldn’t ‘take it to a level where you’d poison your child’ whatever you think that level is. I personally have never been told to not take more than x tablets whilst pg (guidelines might have changed! It’s a long time since I was pg). But you are in an environment that is much more protective re overdose than the US are.

Second, it’s very good to say ‘not enough to poison my child’. But I hope you realise that a fever during pg is dangerous for the baby. From spinabifida, clef palate to autism (yep) to stillbirth etc…. A fever during pg is dangerous.
And I personally fear that women will feel they can’t take paracetamol anymore ‘just in case’ and ‘because they want to protect their baby’ leading outcomes that are just as bad if not worse than what they were trying to prevent.

Oh that's bad ,I wouldn't be surprised if some pseudo science is conjured up for justification.
When in reality it'll be religious fervour at work.

persephonia · 26/09/2025 08:51

There's also a huge correlation between parental exposure to anime and autism. Japan which has the highest rate of autism in the world, also has the most anime! So just to be on the safe side we could ban anime?
It's the same logic!
