Pasta sauce. Cannot believe how nice it tastes with a can of plum tomatoes, a clove of garlic and a few herbs.

I was going to say pasta sauce too - sounds like mine is similar to yours but I add a lump of butter for extra richness.

BarnacleBeasley · 19/09/2025 16:13

Muesli because the ones you can buy are mostly full of dates.

floraldreamer · 19/09/2025 16:13

Most of them! The only exception I can think of is hummus. I am too used to shop-bought, although others love my hummus to me it just doesn't taste right.
Oh and crackers. I CAN make my own but the ready-made ones are just much more convenient and I don't find much fun in making those.

Yes pasta sauce with nearly going too soft tomatoes. Yes and a knob of butter.
Home made butter too.

Have you tried the Lailas pantry seeded cracker recipe? Soo easy and tastes delicious!
i’m the same, cant really think of much I prefer to buy apart from hummus (and the chovi ailoi!)

PegDope · 19/09/2025 16:22

I am keto so can’t buy anything ready made as it’s full of wheat/grains and starches 😂

I make my own bearnaise sauce.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/09/2025 16:23

Sandwiches.
Lasagne.

Enigma54 · 19/09/2025 16:24

Fish pie and paella. I love sword and monkfish, also huge prawns, cheesy mash and lots of fish stock and peppers in the paella.

SpongeKnobNoPants · 19/09/2025 16:25

Guacamole
Especially if you add blue cheese - oh my gooood, its utter heaven! drools in Homer Simpson

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/09/2025 16:25

Tea. It's rare for me to have a decent cup of tea outside my own home. I love tea but rarely risk ordering it away from home.
Scrambled eggs - I make them exactly to my own taste. This also goes for soft-boiled eggs and poached eggs.

tinytemper66 · 19/09/2025 16:26

my husband makes his own muesli and cereal bars (with lots of fruit from the garden). W also use our own tomatoes (in season) to make pasta sauce. I never by the jars of ready made. When I run out I will do as the Op said and use tinned tomatoes 🍅 to make my own pasta sauce.

Bideo · 19/09/2025 16:28

There are lots of things I've never bought ready made, so don't really know if they're better or not, but things like pasta sauce and curry, I don't know why you'd buy it. It's very quick and easy to make.

Yorkshire puddings are my other one. So easy and cheap to make. See also roast potatoes.

And cake. A simple one takes no time. I don't make one often because I try not to eat it too much, but I wouldn't buy one in a box.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 19/09/2025 16:31

Pizza

Homemade dough
Homemade sauce
Strong gouda
Mozzarella
Black pitted olives
Peppers
Mushrooms
Hungarian Gyulai

Cantseetreesforthewood · 19/09/2025 16:31

Pasta sauce - expecially a white sauce.
Guacamole
Cake
Biscuits
Soup
Sandwiches
Pancakes
I only stopped making shortcut pastry when DH needed to go lactose free - shop bought pastry doesn't use butter!

Probably loads more stuff I don't even think of as available - like the fish pie mentioned. Never contemplated buying - not sure I've ever seen one in the supermarket, so guess there is a whole aisle I skip through.

Edit: yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes as mentioned above

DiscoBob · 19/09/2025 16:34

Definitely pasta and pasta sauce. I'd never eat pasta in a restaurant or get a pasta ready meal.

Roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Though my yorkies often come out flat!

Whenthetimeisright · 19/09/2025 16:35

Soup and pasta sauce.
I don't eat cake these days but I much, much preferred to make my own when I did. Shop bought cake tastes nothing like home made.

PestoHoliday · 19/09/2025 16:35

Most pasta dishes. Scones. Poached eggs.

NB - Some restaurants make amazing pasta, but most regular restaurants aren't as good as I can make at home.

murasaki · 19/09/2025 16:36

Lasagna
Moussaka
Steak
Soup
Dauphinoise spuds, ready meal ones are too watery.
Flatbreads

TeamBuffalo · 19/09/2025 16:37

Granola.

My DS works in Costa and brought home some sort of breakfast sandwich with a beautiful runny poached egg in it. They buy them in readymade and heat in a microwave. How on earth do they do that? I dread to think!

Lakeyloo · 19/09/2025 16:51

Potato salad
Coleslaw
Tomato soup and tomato sauces. Just as well as we are over run with ripe tomatoes at the moment so filling the freezer !
