Pasta sauce. Cannot believe how nice it tastes with a can of plum tomatoes, a clove of garlic and a few herbs.

Just about anything
had a week of eating out being on holiday and it didn’t feel good

Potato salad
Coleslaw
Tomato soup and tomato sauces. Just as well as we are over run with ripe tomatoes at the moment so filling the freezer !

Definitely potato salad. With shop bought, the potatoes have no texture and it's too claggy with cheap mayo. I prefer an olive oil dressing anyway but even with mayo, home made is way better.

Any pasta dish or just pasta sauce...pasta ready meals or even in restaurants are usually awful imo. The pasta is rarely al dente and there's always too much sauce.

I am in the process of mastering chip shop curry sauce, it's definitely promising.

Pies, we have a mini Hairy Bikers pie maker, like a toastie maker but for pies, and it makes great individual ones just make your own filling from leftovers or from scratch. Pastry from the shop though due to laziness but that could be homemade too.

Pretty much everything

GLC789 · 19/09/2025 16:58

Potato Salad! Ive never found a decent ready made one! I like the Potato chunks to be soft enough to not crack my teeth!!

@murasaki home grown baby potatoes (still slightly warm), spring onions and chives. Dollop of good mayo and a dash of French mustard. Heaven !

pinkspeakers · 19/09/2025 17:00

Pretty much everything in an ideal world! Is anything better as a ready meal??

But in particular we now make our own granola and muesli having found it impossible to get exactly what we wanted readymade.

I always put mustard in mine too! Shop ones are just soggy spuds and cheap mayo. Bleurgh.

Honestly? Everything. Everything I’ve ever made has been so much nicer than shop bought.

the only thing I can’t get as good is authentic Thai / Chinese so I don’t even bother.

mindutopia · 19/09/2025 17:01

I can think of few things I wouldn’t prefer to make myself rather than buy ready made.

Guacamole and salsa are obvious ones.

Needmorelego · 19/09/2025 17:04

Sandwiches because shop bought ones often have mayonnaise (🤢) and you can't buy readymade jam or lemon curd sandwiches.
Anything else.....I hate cooking.
I'd buy EVERYTHING ready made if I could afford it.

murasaki · 19/09/2025 17:07

Burgers are definitely better home made. Dp makes a pork mince, haggis and black pudding one that is the food of the cholesterol carefree gods. Even beef mince ones are better home made.

Tea. It's rare for me to have a decent cup of tea outside my own home. I love tea but rarely risk ordering it away from home.
Scrambled eggs - I make them exactly to my own taste. This also goes for soft-boiled eggs and poached eggs.

I agree with Tea!

I can drink coffee “how it comes” but I’m fussy about tea…… always have coffee in cafes or at friends houses 🤣

AleynEivlys · 19/09/2025 17:09

I make nearly everything from scratch, including sauces (except ketchup, mayonnaise, tartare sauce etc.) but my favourite to make is parsley sauce.

FrangipaniBlue · 19/09/2025 17:09

also agree with potato salad

and coleslaw but my MILs homemade one

mugglewump · 19/09/2025 17:12

Pizzas. Started making my own during lockdown and shop bought are nowhere near as nice - especially as I do a very rich tomato sauce and use loads of it.

mismomary · 19/09/2025 17:13

Pizza. We got so good at this in lockdown that now my DS13 struggles to eat any other kind of pizza. Even Dominoes is shunned.

ChubbyPuffling · 19/09/2025 17:14

Meat pie. I cheat with jus rol pastry, but the filling is sooooo much nicer homemade (and stuffed to the gunwales).

coxesorangepippin · 19/09/2025 17:18

Soup

Poonu · 19/09/2025 17:20

Pesto

TheAutumnalCrow · 19/09/2025 17:21

Everything really as I can’t eat onions or garlic.

LittleRobins · 19/09/2025 17:46

Veggie lasagne. So many ready meals use lentils which I despise or crappy fake meat. I much prefer chunky veg in mine like courgette, peppers etc

My DS works in Costa and brought home some sort of breakfast sandwich with a beautiful runny poached egg in it. They buy them in readymade and heat in a microwave. How on earth do they do that? I dread to think!

I assume they come in a plastic sachet. Another good reason only to have them at home.
