Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

Those weird fluorescent t shirts that changed colour with body heat...

VanillaEverytime · 16/09/2025 14:05

Elderly ladies with purple and blue rinses.

People carrying boom boxes.

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:07

Yes, elderly ladies had perms and wore long skirts

Ordering clothes through catalogues

There used to be more canteen style cafes - Co-op had them and Woolworth's.

Mood rings.

Flame tattoos, or panther tattoos, on the upper arm.

Phone boxes
Yellow pages
Phone tables
The sound of dial up internet
More cash machines

DoubleShotEspresso · 16/09/2025 14:12

Cash
Ipods
Carefree schedules
Overplucked eyebrows and frosted eyeshadow as a standard combo
Brick phones you could legitimately state had crap reception
Buzzing town centres
Young women were not afraid to have their own style/aspirations/dreams
Available black taxis 24/7
Traffic flowing throughout the city and West End of London
Young adults happy, carefree and socially independent.
Children without water bottles or air tags.
Attainable house prices
A decent restaurant scene in most towns

You can possibly tell, I miss the 90's!

Better shopping on the high street
Not having to book a slot for everything - though this is post COVID.

Global hypercolour

Mushroo · 16/09/2025 14:14

Those little tiny red bugs (spiders?) on bricks. Where have they all gone?!

Dancing sunflowers is a good one.

RidingMyBike · 16/09/2025 14:14

We still get a mobile library van once a fortnight!

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:16

Blockbuster for renting VHS tapes

Older ladies were called things like Elsie and Mabel, which seemed incredibly old-fashioned names back then and are now popular for babies/children!

A lot of older men had been in WW2. Also homeless people were sometimes referred to as “tramps” and were often older war veterans.

Old ladies wearing head-to-foot beige
Travel brochures

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

amateurgobshite · 16/09/2025 14:18

My friends ☹️

VanillaEverytime · 16/09/2025 14:18

Video rental stores

Selection boxes with full sized chocolate bars.

Those stalls in shopping centres where you could have your name written on a grain of rice.

Fluffyholeysocks · 16/09/2025 14:19

Cigarette machines at the pub. Ashtrays on tables in the pub. Cigarette burns in clothes after you got off the nightclub dancefloor

Upstartled · 16/09/2025 14:20

People agreeing to disagree.

TigerRag · 16/09/2025 14:20

Porn magazines in park bushes

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 16/09/2025 14:24

Kwik Save!

No Frills from Tesco with blue and white packaging. I think it was Tesco.

Hedgehog flavour crisps.

Little white pencils to go under your fingernails.

Henara shampoo.

Fake decoupage storage boxes.

Free CDs and DVDs in the newspaper.

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:26

I remember Kwik Save! Safeway as well.

A lot more door-to-door callers - salesmen or religious groups. JWs seem to mostly stand in parks or town centres nowadays.

Comics like Dandy, Beano, Bunty, Debbie for kids that didn't need a small mortgage to pay for. You didn't get glossy pages until the teens mags like J17, Jackie etc, And magazines actually had articles and features in them and weren't just filled with adverts.

angelos02 · 16/09/2025 14:27

Coconut Boost chocolate bars.
