I fell asleep in the cinema

I went to see the Downton Abbey film and fell asleep. I felt like a fool. I bought another ticket and stayed awake this time. Has anyone else done that?

It's not a reflection on the film, it was excellent, just me feeling knackered.

I fell asleep next door to a 2m speaker, pounding out during a rock concert.
Loud noises lull me to sleep 🤣
But I can't sleep at night due to an owl hiccupping 6 miles away.....go figure🤔

supportergirl · 17/09/2025 18:21

Frequently - we go to Vue with the recliner seats, normally we go to kids films because they want to see it but I'm not fussed on them

henlake7 · 17/09/2025 19:15

Nope, absolutely never.
In fact I've often finished a nightshift, walked to my local cinema and watched a couple of films back to back. I'd hate to fall asleep at something I'd paid for but I am very jealous of anybody who can just nap anywhere.

Went through a phase of falling asleep in the cinema in my twenties which corresponded with not being able to sleep in my actual bed at night! Even though the volume could be deafening I just found it all incredibly soporific! Though one film I 'remember' sleeping through was the first Lord of the Rings...enough said, probably.

Notsurewheretostarthere · 17/09/2025 19:22

I fell asleep in every children's movie I took the DC to, I assumed most people had a little nap at those.

Also I sleep on trains, planes, in my car at lunchtime, several plays in the West End. And to my shame, my DC school musical (to be fair, big auditorium with staggered seats and I was at the back in the dark!)

I've had a little snooze before making dinner and I'm heading off to bed in an hour.

Sleeping is my favourite thing.

The first time it happened I was in my mid 20s and it was one of the Star Wars sequels. DH has never forgiven me 😆.
In my defence I was doing teacher training and had been working a part time job with 6am starts over the weekend. I was very tired.

I can sleep anywhere, which is a real talent tbh. I used to trail round the world for work, and could fall asleep in economy coming back from the US by closing my eyes at take off and opening them when touched to put my seat upright for landing (I chose a window seat at the back of the cabin to not inconvenience anyone).
Cinemas are terrible for sending me off so we only go at lunchtimes, and as a teen I fell asleep at a concert and slept through the 1812 overture, cannons and all

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 17/09/2025 20:27

Slept all the way through The Lion King in the West End.

Slept through Matrix Reloaded which was something even for me as that was loud.

Slept through the Planetarium show at the Greenwich Observatory, apparently I kept snoring.

Slept through Lucy Worsley's Agatha Christie show which was s but embarrassing as I was in the front row and she must have noticed.

I can fall asleep anywhere if I am sat down.

When I'm tired I can fall asleep anywhere. I once fell fast asleep in an MRI scan, the radiographer said that was a first for him!

@Beachtastic I slept through my MRI scan too!!! And I refused the headphones (only my legs were in) so it was very loud.

As I see it, I was lying down and warm and could go nowhere for 25mins so why not have a sleep!

ElinorDashwood68 · 17/09/2025 20:58

I always take a coffee with me otherwise guaranteed to fall asleep. We always watch an afternoon showing so can’t blame being tired

PlumpHobbit · 18/09/2025 00:20

I did it once - I was about a month or so pregnant, so feeling queasy anyway

We had lunch, which i ate about 2 spoons of, as it was macaroni cheese which i usually like but this one seemed especially cheesy and my pregnancy nausea made me feel sick

Ended up buying belvita to nibble on

The film was DIRE i HATED it, DH had wanted to see it, it was Deadpool vs Wolverine

Now, while superheroes etc are not usually my cup of tea, if we go watch a Marvel etc film, I can usually get into it

This, was AWFUL, I HATED it. Im not one for forced comedy, and didnt find any of it funny (I have a limited sense of humour), I found the characters obnoxious

I did try fighting when the eyes started going, but then thought I hate the film so much the best thing about it at this point will be having a little cat nap

Woke up with about half an hour left, not sure how long id been asleep, it was great!

Usually the cinema is far too loud for me to fall asleep so this must have been the perfect storm for it to have happened

JetFlight · 18/09/2025 00:22

I zone out and nod off for a few seconds regularly at the cinema.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/09/2025 00:59

So if you are one of those people who almost always falls asleep in the cinema....why go?!

Its not cheap and within a few months you can stream the same film at home for a lot less. So why pay £15 ish to NOT see a film and have a nap?!

Surely if your OH or friend or whoever says "Why dont we go and see a film" the obvious answer is "No, because I will sleep through it, which is a waste of money and we cant talk about it afterwards as I wont have seen it!". I get that it happens occasionally and that you cant leave young kids on their own, so thats understandable, but adults only....I really dont get why you would keep going.

Salvadoridory · 18/09/2025 04:03

I slept through an MRI the other day. They had to wake me up at the end 😀

babyboy520 · 18/09/2025 04:40

I’ve definitely been there! I fell asleep during a film once and was so embarrassed. I was totally wiped out and just couldn’t stay awake, even though the movie was great. Pregnancy (or just general exhaustion) can really knock you out sometimes. It’s definitely not a reflection on the film—sometimes your body just needs that rest! Glad you managed to stay awake the second time around. Hopefully, you got to enjoy it properly the second time!

HippyChickMama · 18/09/2025 07:46

When the dc were small, I’d purposely choose seats where they couldn’t get out without going past me with the intention of having a little sleep during whatever animated film they were watching. I did also once, many years ago, fall asleep in the cinema during a date. I was working two jobs at the time and it was a midnight showing after a 14 hour total work day

RachelTopliss · 18/09/2025 08:09

I'm glad it's not just me! I've enjoyed reading all your stories!
