I fell asleep in the cinema

I went to see the Downton Abbey film and fell asleep. I felt like a fool. I bought another ticket and stayed awake this time. Has anyone else done that?

It's not a reflection on the film, it was excellent, just me feeling knackered.

Yes, I don’t usually miss the whole film, jist bits of it. I fell asleep in key moments of the Marvel films. I still don’t quite understand why the avengers all fell out.

My absolute favourite thing to do when DS was little was go to the cinema with him and fall asleep. He'd be on my lap so I'd know if he absconded. Fantastic naps.

Chasingsquirrels · 15/09/2025 21:45

We went to NZ in Jan 2000 and after a couple of days then DH was fully recovered from jetlag and wanted to go out, I wasn't and suggested the cinema. We went to a Bond film (I don't like Bond films) and I fell asleep during the opening sequence and woke up during the closing credits.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/09/2025 21:46

I always fall asleep in the cinema.

whatwasthatnoise · 15/09/2025 21:47

It's a running joke in our family now. I'm amazed if I stay awake for the whole film! It's something about sitting in the dark in a comfy seat. I still haven't seen all of Donnie Darko 😂

SeaAndStars · 15/09/2025 21:49

To be fair, I spent almost 90% of the Downton Abbey film willing it to finish with every fibre of my being. Couldn't leave - hemmed in by pensioners.

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/09/2025 21:49

That’s my go to option for entertaining the kids when I’m exhausted- Sunday morning kids cinema and a nap, bliss!

MsPavlichenko · 15/09/2025 21:56

I saw Nosferatu in January on one of the bed things you get in the Odeon. Nodded off despite the tension. Prefer a recliner seat tbh, managed ok but had visions of needing hoisted out at some future point ( am old ).

Fell asleep during some dreadful kids films way back when. Power Rangers anyone?

Treviarpelli · 15/09/2025 21:57

I always fall asleep in the cinema and more often than not at the theatre too.
I don’t know why as I’m not a napper anywhere else and I am not tired. I’ve been like it for years.

Whichone2024 · 15/09/2025 21:59

I was once given the task at uni of taking the overseas students out on social activities. I took them to the cinema and fell asleep 5 minutes to the movie and woke up at the end credits 😂
it was one of the movies where Hugh jackman sings but I can’t remember which one. Guess I had a good sleep

Goodideaornot · 15/09/2025 22:00

So envious of people who can fall asleep in random places like the cinema. Do you sleep well on planes too? I’d give money for that skill

BigHouseLittleHouse · 15/09/2025 22:00

I fell asleep in the theatre watching “Waiting for Godot” with Patrick Stewart. I felt awful!

My dh slept most of the way through Incredibles II.

It happens.

OtherS · 15/09/2025 22:06

My dad fell asleep at the opera house, I was very embarrassed. Not taken him since!

bapples1 · 15/09/2025 22:07

I take the dc to the cinema regularly & always fall asleep!

Always sleep on planes if I'm warm. Have fallen asleep on long train journeys too.

fluffiphlox · 15/09/2025 22:09

I have long-standing form for this, including The Empire Strikes Back, The Madness of King George, Cotton Club etc. etc.

TurquoiseDress · 15/09/2025 22:10

I’ve had a nap in the cinema many a time, usually with with the kids watching one of their films

ExquisitelyDecorating · 15/09/2025 22:11

Yes, I have to make a real effort to not fall asleep, it's the sitting still in the dark that does it as I'm a total fidget. I'm usually ok at the theatre as the seats are more upright, and it's not as dark. It's been a gamechanger that most cinemas do coffee now, that really helps me, I think it's the combination of caffeine and the arm movements to drink it.

JustineRobots · 15/09/2025 22:12

I remember both my parents falling asleep during the show at the London Planetarium. When the lights came up, the man next to my mother asked if she’d enjoyed it. She was a bit taken aback as he was a total stranger, but said that yes, she had.

He laughed loudly and said, “You bloody liar! You slept through the entire thing!”. Her face was a picture 😆

Anonyone1 · 15/09/2025 22:14

I went to the cinema once to fall asleep on purpose. I was ill, it was boiling hot and I had to wait around for my daughter in London. I was messaging my friend saying I didn’t know how I would actually last the whole day when I was so ill and she suggested it. Unfortunately it was Top Gun Maverick so I didn’t sleep very much at all!
Fell asleep by accident watching the Minecraft movie.

Sentfrommygarden · 15/09/2025 22:15

I remember actually getting my head down and getting comfy for a nap in some incredibly boring and long winded fight scene in Lord of the Rings.

Sidebeforeself · 15/09/2025 22:15

I once slept through a Texas concert…. Also a landing and take off to re fuel! DH now knows to expect that I will fall asleep in the cinema and the ask questions about the plot later

GlastoNinja · 15/09/2025 22:17

Those 4DX seats are good for a nap, they’re like massage chairs (if you can ignore the noise coming out of the speakers)

Eyesopenwideawake · 15/09/2025 22:17

Lightweight! I fell asleep watching Andre Agassi playing on centre court at Wimbledon!

Katkins17 · 15/09/2025 22:17

Always.

mum outnumbered so with my partner and boys it’s always a marvel film or similar … so it’s my treat to wrap up and have a nap for a couple of hours !!!!
